- zomgfast, on 10/10/2007, -4/+56Just what the Internet needed. Screenshots of Ubuntu.
- MrSarcasm, on 10/10/2007, -5/+48So... how is the design different from 7.04 anyway?
- mildsoup, on 10/10/2007, -4/+41i'd rather look at screenshots of ubuntu then a picture of a Hillary Clinton nutcracker.
- 16777216, on 10/10/2007, -6/+37/me looks at screenshots.
/me looks at desktop.
Yep, looks about right. - corevette, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31the design/theme isn't implemented until final release or beta
this is just an alpha, kind of testing new features - bradleyland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26So then what's the point of screenshots?
- smthop3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25So if it looks the same as the current Ubuntu, what was the point of showing us screenshots?
- dbr_onix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23None existent? All the '[Linux distro] screenshots' are essentially just screenshots of Gnome with a different theme. Which can be shown in about 3 screenshots (One of the splash screen, one of the login window, one of the desktop - that's all you really need..)
- chugger1992, on 10/10/2007, -10/+29still has the ugly 'ole default skin, huh?
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15root@localhost #
- goofballjm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14To get on the front page of Digg
- underdog5004, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18Why are people so interested in seeing screenshots of the desktop? What's the point? It's like seeing screenshots of a movie. It's just seems pointless to me. Can someone explain it to me?
- aaron.dunlap, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18yeah honestly this is pointless unless there is some massive change in the UI.
- snarkleclackers, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Same Out Of Place Capitalization, different comment.
- craterburnsu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I agree 100% dbr_onix.
- tonyhartfield, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11it has nothing to do with the fact it's PCMCIA and everything to do with the fact the card's manufacturer has not bothered writing linux drivers, just use ndiswrapper.
- smellinator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10yer the 2nd person to mention that.
wait.. it's you again! - Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Hey look, a brown GNOME desktop, same as it ever was. Here's a screenshot of the latest Linux:
root@localhost $ - bieber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8...confusing ass program installations? You mean opening a program, _clicking checkboxes next to program names_, and then clicking "Apply"? How the hell less confusing can it get? Lack of drivers? Linux supports more hardware out of the box than any other kernel in existence; if you've got hardware that's not working, it's because the manufacturers refuse to release stats, and you should bitch at them. Unusability? You seem to have confused usability with working exactly like Windows, which is what we're trying to _avoid_ here. If you don't want to learn to use something, then don't, but there's no need for you to come around complaining to everyone else that you can't be bothered to learn a new way of doing things.
- OsakaWilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Uh huh, seriously. This is pointless unless there is some kind of huge change to the UI.
- ekravchenko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8looks the same as fiesty fawn 7.04...
- alex0r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7yeah, they are still using the default homepage from feisty http://www.linuxmonitor.net/shots/displayimage-1-5.html
- T8erT0T, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Wow. Stunning. Completely different.
Erhm, no. Just close your eyes, picture what everything in Fiesty looks like. Done. - crazybrit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The theme is fine. Would you prefer something more generic?
- OsakaWilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I don't mind pictures of something new in Ubuntu, but these screenshots look just like 7.04. It seems someone posts screenshots with every minor advance whether there is a visual change or not.

the real thing is even better - MBHoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You know, I really appreciate you splitting this tiny amount of content into ridiculous amounts of pages. I'm not sure how I'd ever see them if they were below the height of a page! It's not like we have a scroll feature in browsers, right?
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I know you're joking, but I'll clarify this for anyone who doesn't know: The display-config utility is for setting up multi monitors if you don't use a driver like nVidia's which has a control panel to do this already. It also makes it easier to change the driver. There has always been a GUI to change the resolution and refresh rate (which has been removed now you can do this in the new utility), but if you have a too-old monitor, you used to have to do a bit of manual configuration in the X configuration file.
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7To the people commenting over and over and OVER again about the look: STFU. It's an ALPHA release. If you've ever followed the Ubuntu release schedule EVER, artwork is not implemented until release candidate. The art team works while it's being put together.
To the people who created the gallery, and to the person who submitted it to Digg: WTF? There are already articles showing what's new, complete with screens. Why show us a gallery of incomplete software. That's like saying "Windows Longhorn Beta 1 looks like ass". - MBHoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Three rows per page? Come on! Hate clicking through crap like this, when 27 rows of thumbnails would easily fit into a single page without hassle.
You know, browsers have a "scroll" feature now. - muniak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Uhg.
The theme doesn't change until far later usually. Probably because they want noobs more hyped up about release. - trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Strange, my Atheros PCMCIA card worked just by plugging it in...
- msgmsg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I really doubt that's possible
- neopath, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Thanks guys... For a minute there I thought I was the only one thinking this was desperately boring....
Meet the new Ubuntu UI, same as the old Ubuntu UI ... yawns. - Darkhacker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Viewing screenshots of a new Ubuntu release before the artwork is applied is like trying to tell the water temperature of a lake simply by looking at it. As long as the temperature is between 10 C and 50 C... it's the exact ***** same!
- xike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Am I the only one who doesn't like the default brown?
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4http://www.linuxmonitor.net/shots/displayimage-1-13.html
meh... - ispshadow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Thanks for the grafitti, you're now officially a jackass.
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Mainly to show a distro's custom configuration utilities I would think
- bieber, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5If you don't like the theme, either change it or (God forbid!) use another distro, your choice. In the meantime, quit bitching at those of us who do like it, please.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4A changelog would be a lot better in this case
- Devrdander, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5people still use PCMCIA Wireless cards? Hasn't every laptop in the last decade either came with a built in wireless controller in it or have a mini-pci slot with an internal antenna? Or use a USB 2.0 adapter, and if I hear someone complain that they are using a 7 year old laptop that doesn't have minipci/usb2.0 then you should high consider buying something newer...
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Depends on the movie. A Scanner Darkly for example.
But i do completely get what you mean.. and especially when this release has the very same theme as the last. A lot of these screenshots are useless. - Dementual, on 01/27/2008, -0/+3Agreed. If you want to show it off as pretty, at least don't give a screenshot that shows it to be ugly.
- epileet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4i luv ubuntu as much as the next guy but i dont see the point of these screenshots
- bieber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Wow, some idiot logged in as root ;)
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wait 5 years .. i'm pretty sure it looks a lot more different. They just release more often. The LTS releases are now scheduled every two year. You can consider those major releases. (like going with win 95 to win 98) ..
Perhaps .. someday there will also be a new gnome with (most important) a new GTK. That version will look very different. - shakin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's ugly. At least Ubuntu is trying something other than blue, green, or silver like everyone else has.
- crazybrit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You are a troll.
- keitarofujiwara, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have a dual boot system with Ubuntu as my second OS. It's a really cool OS, easy to use, really robust - it has saved my life several times. I would recommend it to anyone who has sensitive/important data because Windows can be a bitch.
