elliottback.com — All of us have a cool movie we download from torrents, and we try to rip that DVD into our CDS. This small tutorial shows you just how to do this without messing up.

- CritCol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, it's also outdated. You don't need to rip the DVD at all, you just need an unencrypted DVD and AutoGK will convert the video straight from the disc, all you've got to do is point AutoGK towards the .ifo file.
Now, this is normally the point where someone is going to post a snarky comment about why would one have unencrypted DVDs, and yada yada, but aren't all DVDs from torrents unencrypted? - allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fair use wizard is awesome.

"but aren't all DVDs from torrents unencrypted?"
Yes. - doctapeppa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is new how?
- xVern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eh, or just rip an iso, and then mount it.
but that only works if you have the disk space, and a good remote. - Byrns5512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For anyone comment about OS X, I have found HandBrake to be a decent ripper. The wiki ehow article has a few more recommendations, but no walkthrough.
- automagically, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1doom9 has lots of good info too.
- tute666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2or use DvdShrink
- Equtious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with tute666. Use DVD Shrink
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Byrns: Do you rip with MactheRipper and encode with HandBrake? I started doing that once but it was taking forever! (iMac G5, 512 RAM)
- karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For Linux your probably going to want to use these tools. dvdbackup, mkisofs, dvdshrink (shrinkto5 someday?), and growisofs.
- griffon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shrink DVD, fast and simple.
- kevbryant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0gee and i thought digg was going to help me discover new technology. here we are reading articles about technology from 1996
- Byrns5512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Timmy:
To be honest, its been at least half a year since I did any ripping, but I recall that I used Handbrake exclusively. It takes a while, but on my Powerbook G4 1.25 GHz and my girlfriend's iBook G4 1GHz, it did finish eventually (can't remember the exact time frame). Your specs sound good, so I suggest trying the most recent versions of the programs (or asking someone who knows what they are talking about ;-)) - jjafuller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TimmyGUNZ, I use HandBrake for the whole thing. Just pop a DVD in, toggle your settings and let it fly. I can usually rip, and encode movies into mp4 faster than realtime on my Dual G5.
I haven't found anything that is as fast or easy as HandBrake so far. - zofo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1osx = handbrake
nuff said - bebopredux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mac the Ripper for OSX is stellar. I've used DVD Shrink and the others on PC but, Mac the Ripper is as simple as hitting "rip". I have 55 ripped DVD's on one of my G5 drives. Not once has Mac the Ripper failed and it's free. I use HandBrake as well.
But really, how is it that there is nothing as simple as Mac the Ripper for PC?
This is what really won me over to Mac's. The video capabilities blow PC's away. I've used PC's extensively in the past but, they are hiccuping, choking video manglers IMO. - thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is really lame. Especially considering that Macrovision just purchased DVD Decrypter (so I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole). Using the tried and true AnyDVD/CloneDVD combo works everytime and is done with one easy step (or DVDFab)
- anonymoustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why isn't there a LiveCD from DVD Ripping already?
Assume the following hardware:
1 - DVD-ROM
1 - DVD-R/RW (+, -, DL, whatever)
1 - CD-ROM (to boot the live cd from)
1 - 20GB scratch HD - forever200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DVD Shrink is good for just ripping the dvd's but if you actually need to shrink the dvd then dvd shrink sucks... dvd shrink is old tech and doesn't do a very good job at the actual shrinking unless you just need to shink it a small amount.... If you need to shrink a gig and up off the disk you going to need something with a little more boom.... DVD Rebuilder is the way to go... it uses CCE Basic or SE.... the encoding takes a little longer but boy the quailty difference is amazing.. http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/
like I said DVD shrink is old... try dvd rebuilder and be amazed - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"FairUse Wizard is the new hotness."
hotness, yes. new, not so much. i've been using this for years and its great. - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0forever200 - I haven't seen any problems with any of the discs I've shrunk. DVD Shrink is great. For those discs that have the additional Sony protection on them DVD Decryptor is needed, sometimes in combination with AnyDVD.

- zone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any alternatives to DVDReMake? I want to keep/modify the menues sometimes... Thanks
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Come'on people just use DVD Shrink. Follow this http://www.doom9.org/?/mpg/dvdshrink31-main.htm except use the re-author option and just dump the menus to save space on the DVD for better quality. Best of all there's no .avi files.
- rathburner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was completely distraught when DVD decrypter stopped working for me. Now i use 1click dvd, cracked of course and dvd43free
- hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd say this is useful... +1 digg!
Matt - thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for OSX, use Handbrake
http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21117 - pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm posting this kind of late, but if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
I recently got Serenity for Christmas, but when back it up with DVDecrypter, I get 6 different VOBs. AutoGK only seems to work with one VOB file. I've tried making the Divx files and then joining them with VOBEdit ( I think, I've tried so many ways ). I've tried Nero, but it hangs on the Dolby and produces a silent movie...ahh the good ol' days.
I've googled, poured over Doom9 and Afterdawn, and tried several different approaches, all of which have ended in failure. - rothbart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pr0t0:
Back it up using IFO mode, you should be fine. I haven't actually done it with the Serenity DVD myself, so unless this is using one of the newer forms of copy protection (which admitedly I know very little about) you're probably just not using the right mode from DVDecrypter. - saddad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With DVDDecrypter, has anyone tried using an external dll like Elby's? I hear that will help decrypter still be used and be able to be updated.
- Greenline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great Post I have been back like 3 times to try different Rippers!!! +DIGG
- dvdd127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ill have to try this
- mmmthmtskier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DVD43 then DVD Shrink then ImgToolClassic then ImgBurn. Works great for me...
- forever200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eveyone here is such newbies.......still thinking dvd shrink is the way to go......
- Wings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Mac process is rather painless if you don't mind spending $40 for Roxio Popcorn (or Toast, for $60). An alternative way which is free involves converting your VIDEO_TS folder into a disk image which can be burned from the Finder. The conversion is handled by an applescript available from here: http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
They have very clear and simple instructions on how to use their method and the steps to take to burn a DVD movie. You do need to use MacTheRipper (see below) to create the VIDEO_TS folder before using this method.
Back to the easiest way (Popcorn).
1. Download MacTheRipper (Google for it or go to macupdate.com... it's a freebie.)
2. Insert your original DVD, and using MTR, choose "Main Feature Extraction". Click Start. Wait until done.
3. Run Popcorn, choose VIDEO_TS Folder under Formats, and drag the VIDEO_TS folder created by MTR into Popcorn's main window.
4. Insert a blank DVD and click Start button in Popcorn. Wait. If the VIDEO_TS folder is too large to fit on one DVD, Popcorn will re-encode it to fit.
5. Go play your movie. - JAWS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THIS is best thing about Digg hands down. The digg itself is ok (I agree w/ many that videohelp.com has a few superior tut's), but it's the comments section that is awesome.
- musicgenius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Already saw this on WASD no digg
- mrfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish they didn't broadcast this!
- MissMyZDtv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mac OS X, as posted before, Mac the Ripper (MTR) is awesome... 1 click full disc extracting. If you use Roxio Popcorn to burn it, You are good to go. MTR makes the Video TS files that popcorn looks for and (shhhh...) removes the regional coding and all else. Great for "backing up" "your" DVDs. If you have a DL burner, no compression is needed, bonus!
- MissMyZDtv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry bout previous post. Posted before reading whole article. Mac X, Handbrake is good, ffmpegX is good, iSquint is good, They all take a long time though...
