- samsonlonghair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I agree that this is a big improvement (previously England was the only European country with roads), but it's still not all of Europe. Bulgarian and Romanian roadways are still absent. Only the largest roads in Greece are shown.
Google maps are great, but there's still a long way to go; A lot of the roads in my own city here in the US are not shown.- confounded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not just England, the whole of the UK had coverage. They still have lots of incorrect street names though.
- jasoncart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some London tube stations are incorrect as well. Must confuse the hell out of tourists.
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder how many people know the difference between England, UK, and Britain...
- dankarran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish the whole of Britain was covered - then the Isle of Man would show as having roads as well!
- yppiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have no comment, I just like quoting samsonlonghair out of context: "previously England was the only European country with roads."
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Give us maps for Australia!
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5go ask your ***** government to stop picking ***** outta their asses and release their GIS info out.
Otherwise, next time, say "Please" . - Shinglor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heck yes, Whereis sucks!
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5go ask your ***** government to stop picking ***** outta their asses and release their GIS info out.
- Philipp_Lenssen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2TomHTML of the French Google blog Zorgloob predicted this a couple of days ago -- nice work!
http://www.zorgloob.com/2006/04/google-maps-en-france-et-en-europe.asp - trakais, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4where? ALL is not there, baltics, romania, bulgaria, albania, etc. I hope they will add those too eventually
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3doh, Ireland still only has urban coverage. Seeing as google's HQ for Europe here I hope they update them soon!
- InspectorOyster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does anyone have experience with a good low-cost geocoding service with support for these areas? I'd love to add some European pubs to locallush.com.
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Geocoding in Ireland is tricky, no free services. I'm having to do my own one for http://www.pumps.ie. You can do you own using the data from http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/cntry_files.html
They have all of Europe covered. You cap pop it into a mysql DB and start form there. - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've noticed that when you do a UK postcode lookup on google maps, the resulting link doesn't include the lat and long required for geocoding. However, if you zoom out by one step (and then back in again if you want to retain the original found view), the link gains lat and long values. Has anyone seen a script for automating this and thus providing a postcode -> lat/long geocoder?

- Ddevil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its an improvement, at least. I live on a dirty road in a small northern Italian town. My street is represented.
- Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do anyone know how I can find out if google is planning of getting a better satellite image of my town because currently it is completely covered by a cloud.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=lund+sweden+&ll=55.793754,13.166771&spn=0.15923,0.541077&t=k&om=1 - bmson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There ain't any street-map for Iceland.
So it's not all of Europe. But for most part, it is. - graven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are streets in Switzerland, but none of them appear when I search on them. Half arsched if you ask me.
- ZergyPoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, I live on the "Chemin de la Gabiule" in switzerland. I can see the street on the map, but it can't find it when I search for it.
Not only that, but my town name is "Collonge-Bellerive" and it points me to the other side of switzerland when I search for that.
This is a step in the right direction, but they have a lot of work to do.
- ZergyPoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, I live on the "Chemin de la Gabiule" in switzerland. I can see the street on the map, but it can't find it when I search for it.
- knotty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Roads? Where we're going, we don't NEED roads!
- sandrejev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, sadly all roads end at the Lithuanian border, especialy when you live in Lithuania
- cdgore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It only covers Western Europe atm.
- donkapone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dammit... why google says that if it doesn`t cover all europe? for example Lithuania... and i`m offended because i`m lithuanian :/
- OropheR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All Europe? this is not true. Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia are a huge no man's land. Not even the capitales are written and these 3 countries belong to EU!
Pity, considering that the most beautifull girls in the world are in Lithuania... - muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spain's coverage is great. This is amazing.
- Waredgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woohoo! Going to Warsaw in a couple weeks so this came just in time!
- sagenumen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I afraid "All of Europe" was a bit of an overstatement. Certain towns in Poland still aren't listed and addresses in cities still aren't searchable.
- szym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yup, it's just a map, no search yet :(
- Waredgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True, true...just tried looking for my hotel - no go. But at least the street names are there.
- PerroBG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Blah-blah-blah... ALL of Europe... My country Bulgaria is empty including capital Sofia...
none against Google but this is 101% advertising trick.. - fdemmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why is bratislava bigger than vienna!?
vienna is the capital of austria and it is not labled at this zoom
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ll=47.323931,15.864258&spn=7.120234,14.985352&om=1
also some labels are misplaced and in addition completely irrelevant (like the "gaensehaeufl" which is a public bath)- silkworm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was wondering about that too, but because I live in Bratislava, I'm happy for that :-) I wonder how long it would take them to correct it.
- johnjreiser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An algorithm likely places the labels according to the importance of a place and the availability of space for the label. It doesn't make sense to you, but it makes sense to the rendering engine that puts the maps together. They should have a cartographer go over the maps (at 1:1,000,000 scale) and correct issues like the one you presented and then just let the label rendering engine go to work like usual.
- fan0616, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Now only if they could get their maps up to par with Yahoo or Ask.com. The satellite imagery on Google is pretty piss poor.
- NickLe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ALL of Europe obviously doesn't include southern Portugal!
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5not if I have my way, damn Southern Portugese...
*joking - dxgg, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1I see southern Portugal just fine...at least from the West coast up to about Lagos. I live in Praia da Luz (just west of Lagos) and the coverage is pretty good!
- ptknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stop whining, it's there
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5not if I have my way, damn Southern Portugese...
- rschnz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Did anyone heard that that european part of Russia takes 40% of Europe's area? Or maybe you think that Russian isn't in Europe?
- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and what about Ukraine?
- Acidosis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Says who? Only part of Russia counts as in Europe and no way is the part west of the Balkans 40% of the total area of Europe. Besides a lot of that land is uninhabited.
@Zatrix ppl have noticed that the description is wrong and that its only western Europe that has been done, you don't need to list every country its missed.
- buxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was about time.
But they are on the good trail, they even added some more hi res pics of Holland, Amsterdam for example. - arnorhs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's also missing Iceland. For some reason, people who refer to "all europe" tend to forget about iceland ... And to everyone who doesn't know: ***ICELAND IS A PART OF EUROPE***
- Lingur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Exactly! It gets pretty irritating sometimes. It's like being left out of the rest of the world.
PS. I think I'm the third Icelander posting here just in this digg.... that's cool!
- Lingur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Exactly! It gets pretty irritating sometimes. It's like being left out of the rest of the world.
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey, I live in Eastern Europe and there are absolutely no roads for my country. Inaccurate title.
- pedmond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I fully agree with that comment. Google should know by now what Europe means...
- djoek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2what good are street maps if you can't get driving directions yet?
- johnjreiser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you zoom in enough, there are not only roads, but mass transit features for certain areas - for example Paris has Métro stops and Berlin has U-Bahn stations labelled.
- virgilash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm consterned. Romania is not considered in Europe, but Moscow is ... ??????
- Jakub81, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Google Maps street maps for HALF of Europe...
- Kaioshin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know Slovenia, the country I'm from, is not in Europe. It somehow managed to join the EU a few years ago, and is located in like the very center of the continent; but I guess that doesn't make it part of Europe. The same goes for some other countries, but I'm currently pissed about this the most. (Pissed because this ALWAYS happens to us)
- zoxed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To some of the above posters: "Europe" can mean many things. During the Cold War there was a political "Europe" as distinct from "Eastern Block". There is "Continental Europe": that (I tihnk) would include Eastern Europe and some of Russia, but not the islands (Iceland, Ireland, UK etc). There is Europe as in the European Union, which would not include, for example, Switzerland or Norway.
Oh, and of course there is New and Old Europe :-)
(But I am neither a politician, historian nor a geographer and by any definition the article seems a little off :-)- trakais, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and there is EU and these maps are not representing any of the mentioned. it's just an upgrade for some european countries. but a good start!
- kepano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I expected Google to add these before the end of the year, but that was fast! I am very impressed with the coverage of France, it looks like they added new super high-res pictures of Paris too!
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is very cool. I wonder if they'll ever have coverage of every street in Europe, like they have in the US, Canada, and the UK. Countries like Croatia are missing a lot of data.
- plasticbiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man this would have come in handy 4 months ago when I was on travel to Germany, finding directions, in english, was a bear. I had to beat msn maps into submission in order to get it done.
- Aslan72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This would have also been handy navigating Dublin; last time we were there we ended up getting lost and having to buy an accurate map and look for monuments to get us around...street signs are for the weak ;)
--pete - cico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks Google,
They did a great job for France even my small native village is there ! - muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, not all of Europe is there, but most important cities are, and smaller towns from certain countries too! this is great progress.
Keep the faith, people. - digger_twit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Reported as inaccurate - no Eastern Europe.
- sandig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm just waiting for them to get decent satellite coverage of Oxford (UK). They manage everywhere else in the country just fine, just not Oxford.
- nikaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, those photos must be really old.. Check out the building that is still under construction..
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&sll=51.498839,-0.175685&sspn=0.002358,0.005032&q=imperial+college&t=h&om=1&ll=51.4988,-0.175717&spn=0.001179,0.002516
I think that building was constructed in the 90s.. - ravedave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like the chunnel is totally fubared, but amazingly they have all of the ferry boat lines shown & named... crazy
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ll=47.323931,15.864258&spn=7.120234,14.985352&om=1 - dasch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally! I've been wanting street maps of Denmark for so long!
- wizgha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Malta's not there as far as I'm concerned... but it's nevertheless a good start.
- d_proudfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great. I just wish they had it in February when I went to Vienna and Milan. We where staying just ouside of Milan and had no map for the area around the hotel.
- jmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ALL of Europe? Haha, far from it! How about Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Estonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, etc.
- dbxz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what about all of former yugoslavia?!
- 511pf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Obligatory bump for GMaps Pedometer, which works with the new European maps.
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ - magicRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just had a quick look at both Munich and Berlin. Both have U-Bah and S-Bahn information there too. Excellent stuff.
