Garfield funnier without his thoughts?
websnark.com — MikeJ comes up with the thesis that Garfield would be much funnier if all his thought bubbles were removed. He shows examples, definitely worth a look, that makes Jon seem darker, Garfield more hilarious, and the strip generally a more quality piece of work.

- traviswalters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Garfield stopped being funny 5 weeks after it was first printed. How many more jokes about a fat cat must we endure.

for a daily strip, it's hard to make every single one a gut buster. several strips have made me die kaughing though. like when he got too fat to move! haha - bryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The digg effect has struck again...
- Shii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Before anyone jumps in saying "Something Awful" did this first, SA did not do this first. The idea first appeared in a blog called the Comics Curmudgeon, just over a year ago today:
http://joshreads.com/?p=221 - beelz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0death comes to us all.
- Shii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, looks like the link broke.
Here's some I've picked up myself.

- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is pretty funny w/o the thought bubbles....

Ugh. Broken-database errors are impossible to understand (except maybe to us, 'cause we're nice like that).
People should just write and serve straight HTML and quit the stylish, slow, SQL blog crap. If HTML is too verbose, write it in your own XML DOCTYPE with a CSS xml-stylesheet. Three browsers (IE, FX, Oppy) all support it to varying extents. - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0( A minimal example with RSS is on http://www.scottandrew.com/pub/xml/index.xml -- as seen on http://developer.apple.com/internet/webcontent/xmltransformations.html )

- drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lame. Minimalist somethingeranother. But, lame.
- kamizu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Garfield was funnier in the late 80s and early 90s. After that, I dunno what happened. He still amuses me at times, but only at times. I suppose a few of his strips would be a tad funnier without his thoughts, not necessarily all of them though.
- domusvita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I say take out the art and leave the bubbles. Now that's comedy.
- RocketMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be hilarious without the thoughts, speech, color, characters, or art.
- sgt99999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought the point of Garfield's thought bubbles was to let the reader in on Jon's psychosis of believing his pets communicate with him and each other telepathically.
