cryptex.org — For all you DaVinci Code fans out there this is really awesome. This site builds Cryptex's to custom orders. Some of these look really awesome! Check out the gallery on the website.

  • tkw722, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Its awesome looking. They are essentially little safes. They were originally designed by Leonardo DaVinci. They were found as little drawings in his notebooks. This site actually makes them based on DaVinci's drawings fit to your order.

  • nicholasjon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For Christmas my folks got me a cryptex from this place: http://www.encryptagifts.com/index.htm -- they're less expensive, but they don't have the "vial of disintegrating fluid" either. I do highly recommend them as gifts, I had a blast figuring out all the "keys" to opening mine.
  • mikson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i watched on discovery channel once that actually cryptex is invention of Dan brown it doesn't even do what it suppose to after the container with vinegar breaks it doesn't destroy papyrus it just makes it wet.
    But it's a great idea and looks cool to :D

Although I wouldn't object if someone wanted to give me an ebony and gold cryptex with ruby spacers from the cryptex.org site :-)

  • jessek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0His name isn't "DaVinci" you dolt. "Da Vinci" simply means that he was from the city of Vinci, Italy. Anyone from that city can be called "Da Vinci". It's not a compound word and it certainly isn't a last name. The proper use would be "Leonardo Da Vinci's".

    Try actually learning from a history book instead of relying on "The Da Vinci Code" for all your historical information.

    This device is a sort of "archaic looking" but neatly engineered combination lock tube that holds documents. Its designed so that tampering with it would release chemicals that would destroy the documents inside. In this day, we don't really need something like this but would still be pretty cool to have on the shelf at work.
