Apology Letter From Ed Lopez, Owner of PriceRitePhoto
thomashawk.com — I received a call this morning from Ed Lopez, the owner of PriceRitePhoto. We spoke at length and he told me that the activity that has resulted from my post on my experience with his business has most certainly impacted his business. Note: This is from Thomas Hawk's blog, not me!
- 3679 diggs
- digg it
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1way to go digg!
- nativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0shweeet!
- jackmaninov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In related news, PriceRitePhoto's website is down. Probably their host following through on their ToS violation notice (see Update 10 on Thomas Hawk's original post)
- evanfrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And THAT is what "mob justice" gets. We, the people, in order to maintain a more perfect union, doing what we can to make sure that others don't get away with thier shady business practices
- tibman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let this mark a new era for the little guy.
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah! midgets rejoice!
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it was great seeing this whole story unfold - - - pretty awesome
- zapatadore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Board meeting" my ass. Shady places like this are usually just a handfull of people with an outsourced call center. Mr. Lopez and Mr. Phillips are probably the same person.
- paisley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually i talked to only 4 different people.... three guys and one girl.. anyone else? it's amazing what happenens when you email an admin for a backbone and CC: the hosting facility. Hundreds of people tie up their phone lines and their e-mail account and slurp up the bandwidth from their server in one day.. E-mail and telephone various media outlets... and do some things that are umm... slightly illegal... did the boy get a refund yet?
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Typical contrite spin from the owner though. I doubt they have "company board meetings", that sounds rather inflated. It sounds to me that, while it is probably good that he is buckling under the pressure of the common man, that he was aware of exactly what the business practices were and it won't be long until they are back in action with the same techniques for pressuring customers to purchase additional unwanted extras.
- paisley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0lol...
- jackmaninov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, their site is back up. Despite a ToS violation...
- PoolyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree with 4answer2. This looks like a case of "we promise we'll be nice from now on." Sure - I don't believe it for a second. While I don't think anyone should be pranking them, the word should still be spread that no one should do business with them.
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know if we really did any good, long range. But, we increased Mr Hawks self worth, and rattled some people. As Hawk says, Lets take the high road, and see what NY does about it... THAT will be interesting...
Cyborg - jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But look, they _SAID_ they'd be nice and totally reform their business practices to be nothing like their past three incarnations! We should believe them in a heartbeat because we are powerful. YES!
- Coltron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0See, a little vigilantism really can do a lot :P
http://thebrig.org - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WE WIN!!!!! HELL YEAH!!!! REJOICE
- loker269, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0linsys the story unfolded on the blog this is where it all happened so in general I would agree with you but in this case thats where the news was
- Hieros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Steve Phillips = Owned
- dsxmakina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. So does this mark the era of the consumer? Can we actually get people like this to stop and think twice about screwing over the little guy?
But more importantly....who's next? Sony/BMG? The RIAA?....anyone have any ideas?...hehehheehehehe - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha, a guy got fired because of someone posted their story on digg, and we got involved, the internet mob : digg users. So is this gonna be one of the top stories too?
- zodiacal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what if what they say is true about no such thing as bad press. maybe he will get more customers from his name being out there. i don't buy it but does that saying have any marat?
- DeadlyHunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dang about 6000 diggs and the original story is already gone from the front page
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Resellerratings.com. Learn it. ESPECIALLY for camera stores. They're the worst.
- GhengisKhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23News flash: Steve Phillips has effectively resigned from PriceRitePhoto today, amid speculation of dishonest business practices. His successor will be Phillip Stevens.
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"Can we make a RULE that people can't post BLOGS any more.. I'm soooooooo tired of reading people blogs.."
Can I SUGGEST that you don't read post BLOGS any more... and can we make a rule to stop people saying so like soooooooooo, it's pissing me off. - mcgillicutty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"News flash: Steve Phillips has effectively resigned from PriceRitePhoto today, amid speculation of dishonest business practices. His successor will be Phillip Stevens."
LOL! - flipzmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"News flash: Steve Phillips has effectively resigned from PriceRitePhoto today, amid speculation of dishonest business practices. His successor will be Phillip Stevens."
hahah!! - genconkeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now now now lets let NY's AG at him. From what I've heard Elliot will tear him a new one.
- loker269, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zweben did you look at their rating? they were rated pretty well....
- whitey0680, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HAHA you can't even click the "Review Us" links on the right of the page anymore.
- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i personally called and told them about digg... the owner logged on while i was on phone... 1 more new digg member.
- mister6ix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't believe the sincerity of this email apology one bit.
Keep up the work diggers! - cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope this causes this site to go out of business, Lopez should have done something with Phillips a long time ago. DON'T BUY FROM THIS SITE EVER! Lopez should have given him the camera FREE of charge after this insane experience. Let this site go to the dogs.
- mcsweeney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had a similar situation with mymarkdown, good to see things are getting fixed for you (sort of).
Steve Phillips' dismissal is a good start, but something tells me the problem at P.R.P. is more than one guy--this thing normally starts at the top. Side note, wasn't Steve the Mets GM at one time? - pokerpundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. The power of Digg!
The owner of the store is now offering to provide the product at the advertised price.
VICTORY!
Huh? - alias157, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"We have also terminated Mr. Philips from his position with our company"
Woot, Dugg him out of the job, but still doesn't explain why he has harassed so many people. Probably for his own commission or something? - steveoa3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure Mr. Phillips didn't act alone, the owner knows that they sell at a discount and cancel your order if you don't buy overprice add-ons. I also read somewhere they give a discount if you give them GOOD feedback at ratings sites and if you never mention they paid you to do it !
The owners only sorry he got pwn3d, no one will get fired... Nothing will change.
I think I will call them and ask if the camera was in stock and if they would require me to buy add-ons to get the low price and see how they respond. My Caller ID tag at is "State of Wisconsin Department of Commerce" since thats who I work for so I think they might be a little worried. - en3r0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Brought em to his knees, good work guys!

I don't think Spitzer really cares since he's after the big fish dealing in $Billions$.
Also, I think Ed Lopez = Steve Philips. - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What needs to be done is a background check on Steve Philips and Mr. Lopez to make sure number one that both of them exist, otherwise he is taking on a new identity or neither one is this guys real identity and he just has a new alias.
Either way I think this guy should have provided additional proof and even that camera at a greater discount that advertise price or EVEN absolutely FREE. I mean I think that would send a strong signal if he sent it to the guy FREE that they are truely apologetic and want to make amends with their bad business practices(along with proof of Steve Philips being fired) Such as a video camera recording Steve Philips walking into his office and being told he is fired. Then also show some type of felony on his permanent record or prosecute him for something. I mean what business doesn't file suit against an employee that has SEVERELY hurt their business? With that said I now even believe more so that Mr. Lopez is a fake, firing at this point is not enough. - bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1digg army pwns Steve Phillips

Better than the SONY DRM awareness ... http://DRMthisSONY.com - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I FOUND ED LOPEZ lol
http://www.edlopez.com/
well he lives in brooklyn, NY too - Moose_Head, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh yes they are having a "board meeting" hahahaha
- zone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a bit skeptical about that letter. Apart from "my post on my experience with his business has most certainly impacted his business" I don't believe a word of it.
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is a possible 5 Ed Lopez's that live in Brooklyn, NY
And only 1 Steve Philips that lives in Brooklyn, NY
So actually it is completely possible for both of them to exist but if I was the one that got ripped off by them I would at least purchase the background record of Steve Philips and if the guy has the phone number and address of Ed Lopez I'd purchase his background record too. These background records are also public meaning it should not be unlawful to post them on his blog(If you live in Brooklyn, NY you can go to the county court house and get these public background records for free I believe, or atleast I think that is how it is in Texas) - ekanes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doesn't sound like a very sincere apology...
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... wait, I thought his name was John Hancock!
:) - Shrill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if Ed Lopez is Steve Philips... THIS is the power of Digg and the era of worldwide social pressure groups.
