- bdfariello, on 12/27/2008, -2/+20You can't take fighting out of hockey any more than you can take the ice out. It'd be like nascar without the explosive car crashes.
- BruB, on 12/27/2008, -6/+19Et C'est pour ça que nous avons signé Georges Laraque.

- avrus, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8Protip: Fighting is necessary in hockey.
- dialectical, on 12/27/2008, -0/+7Play the game once at any competitive level, and then come back here and tell us your mind hasn't changed.
And there are tons of fights in Rugby, BASEBALL(!?), Football. Maybe hockey has it correct and just sanctions it properly. - SPRFRKR, on 12/27/2008, -0/+7should be:
"I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out. "
- Rodney Dangerfield - Cheesasaurus, on 12/27/2008, -2/+8I think fights in hockey add to the excitement, which would probably help them build the sport's fan base back up. I remember the first time I went to see a game I was hoping for a fight.
- DickyT83, on 12/27/2008, -4/+10"Two enforcers battle, often briefly, to defuse the emotion generated by a tight, physical game, or to create some emotion."
Ohhh so that's what they meant by fighting. - legendary, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6That's because you don't understand the game of hockey. Fighting is not that big of a part of hockey. There's an average of 1 or 2 fights a game. Anyways, Players often fight to stick up for there teammates. So, for example, the goalie is getting slashed at while hes covering the puck. You can't let someone slash at your goalie. So a fight usually will break out. There not fighting just to fight. There defending a teammate. Go Blackhawks and Detroit Sucks.
- Wodewick, on 12/27/2008, -1/+6Then maybe you should watch Championship Knitting on Lifetime....
- gatorfree, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5Why is there a picture of of a soccer coach jumping around in a suit about halfway down the page?
- supermanly, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4"Hopefully this means its popularity is picking up in the States..."
I hate to rain on your parade but the Digg population is by no means representative of the majority of the US, who seem to prefer baseball/American football. That said, it's still a good sign and I'm all for hockey! - zoziw, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5There are many things more dangerous in hockey than a fight. High sticking, knee on knee checks, blocking a shot, a puck in the face, etc...
- CraigB12, on 12/27/2008, -5/+9oh that's just ***** hilarious, and my hilarious I mean not hilarious.
- SPRFRKR, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Donald Breshear > Georges Laraque.
Maybe not always in fighting, but Brash can move the puck a little as well. - 2T0ne, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Oftentimes it is. If a team is down by two goals or so in the beginning of the third period, a lot of the time a player on the losing team will try to pick a fight in attempt to rally his fellow players to victory.
- Lososaurus, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3You also fight to get your team fired up or to tell the other team to knock that ***** off.
- dialectical, on 12/27/2008, -2/+5... more like with one SUCKER punch. This is NOT a hockey fight and a cheap shot at best. Stuff like this IS the reason why the players accept fighting in hockey. Tootoo takes a run at Modano, (Dallas', and the USA's best player), and then when Robidas approaches takes a wild swing with his glove AND hockey stick in hand. That is NOT hockey and not a hockey fight.
There is a reason why there is a saying in Hockey to "drop the gloves". - DeadSkinMask, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Agreed.
In years past, if you lay a big hit on a star player, you would be expected to drop the gloves if needed. This year, it seems like the scrapers take exception to ANY huge hit, regardless of the player.
I think it's crap.
If its clean, let it go. Players need to keep thier heads up or they run the risk of getting nailed. End of story. - CNAIF, on 12/27/2008, -3/+6dugg down because of sheer overused stupidity
- DeadSkinMask, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Hockey has clean, fair, legit fights.
Boxing in it's current state is a complete joke. - anonymou38, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I realize that, but a man can dream right?
- sfcaptainrob, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Dugg for Bob Probert.
- 2T0ne, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Halte la! Halte la! Les Canadiens sont la!
- Walker2323, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3"Despite Rule Changes, Fighting in the N.H.L. Is on the Rise "
The rule changes weren't meant to decrease fighting. They were meant to take out the clutching and grabbing that slowed the game and made it boring. - Zachari, on 12/27/2008, -2/+5Or maybe because hockey fights have gone on forever. You just can't really take it out. People go to see that. Basketball has never had a history of fights expected (unless you're Ron Artest's team of the week). Leave the race ***** at home.
- dialectical, on 12/27/2008, -2/+5Fine, drop the gloves and give him the business he deserves. Don't take a run at him with two hands on your stick at throat level. Tootoo is a dirty player. To small to play with the big boys and not fast enough to score on a consistent basis. That's why he resorts to this kinda garbage...
- anonymou38, on 12/27/2008, -2/+4I gotta say I'm definitely glad to see hockey making the front page a few times in the last week or so. Hopefully this means its popularity is picking up in the States...
- CoreyHalliwell, on 12/27/2008, -4/+6Hockey: One of the most manly sports around. I really can't watch any other sport... call me closed minded but where else can you get UFC style action, an object being shot at 100MPH, the grace of passing plays dangling, and one timers. Hockey is the perfect blend of manliness and skill. Regardless though I DO think that it is stupid when a team fights like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzxz6p-hNDE Even then i still find it kind of comical. But I do find it sick when players do stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMvOd3qde6k I think bertuzzi committed assault and should have neverbeen alowed to play again. Oh well he sucks with calgary anyway. In the end though i think fighting is a part of hockey and despite the moral reasons NOT to include it in kids leauges or the NHL if a fight breaks out between two adults on the ice with refs there to break it up i'm definitely going to watch and morally look the other way.
HOCKEY RULES! - dialectical, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2That's garbage. Lot's of examples of Hockey players acting like idiots with many killing people because of there irresponsible actions:
I point you here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_MacTavish#Mansl ...
and here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dany_Heatley#Atlanta_ ...
and even the "clean cut, Staal brothers"
http://www.canada.com/topics/sports/story.html?id= ...
And please don't make me bring up the drug problems of Kordic, Prohbert or Kevin Stevens (the list is larger than that and even includes Grant Fuhr).
Sadly, Canadians hide behind their supposed true international good image and the rest of the country usually ignores this type of behavior because they are blinded by their need to idolize their players. NHL players are not immune to the pitfalls of the rich and high life and the "old days" of hockey players being approachable and well behaved is completely gone, if it ever existed. - dialectical, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3I don't think you have ever watched a hockey game. The reason why fighting is accepted in hockey is because the PLAYERS except it as a way to enforce or "reinforce" order if the refs miss something. Hockey is as tough as rugby and faster than basketball. Refs miss stuff constantly, especially cheap stuff, along the borders or with the stick (a dangerous object at those speeds, and can be used improperly, with little regard for the opposing player). So if someone gets out of line, which happens at that speed and aggressiveness, and the refs miss it a simple reinforcement is accepted. Basketball, technically, is a ZERO contact sport. There should be no need for this type of stuff and the players know this and accept the opposite (no fighting).
As for the race analysis of your comment, well, it is pretty lame (borders on troll status). Most hockey players are white because they come from Canada and, and rural Canada for that matter. Those areas simply do not have the multi cultural aspect. Although, that is changing, there are at least 4 or more Allophones on the Jr. version of Team Canada. 2 of which are from African decent. - Wodewick, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Something worthwhile like....ummmm....burying stupid comments like this.
- Wodewick, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Probert and McSorely...two of the all-time great enforcers
- Jeffler, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3Except several of the NHL's top fighters are black, and the best overall player who occasionally fights is black...
- Lososaurus, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1"The rule changes weren't meant to decrease fighting. They were meant to take out the clutching and grabbing that slowed the game and made it boring."
Yeah, they're turning it into basketball where you're not allowed to touch the guy, get in his way or go anywhere near him. - dialectical, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1Good point. Iginla is tough as nails and has the skill and speed to play with anyone. Yet, he is almost universally celebrated as one of the best in the NHL and respected by all the players because he will stick up for himself if needed. Another is George Larocque who has is a very tough player that had some good seasons points wise when he was younger. Iginla is almost a national hero for being as skilled as he is and as tough as he is. A great talent and the vast majority of the hockey fans do not care about his race.
- bamirza, on 12/27/2008, -3/+4The goons will never be this good though...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR389em23T8 - dialectical, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1You must live in Nashville with season tickets. Sheesh. So biased it is not even funny. Quit the cheesy and lame swearing and analyze this incident with an unbiased eye.
1) Robidas is not "my" player. I am not a Dallas Stars fan but I can see a cheap shot when I see one. There are cheap shot artists on teams that I support and I want them suspended or off the team.
2) Stop your video @ 0.53 and you will see the Robidas has not even touched Tootoo yet but Tootoo has widely (gloves on and stick up) and blindly swung around to hit with intent to harm. If you played hockey at any level, you would know, that throwing punches with you stick up and your gloves on is not only unbelievably cowardly but will lose you the respect of your teammates and other players. Notice how all the other Nashville teammates do not come into help Tootoo. That right there should be clear evidence that they hate it when he does garbage like this.
3) Sadly, Tootoo takes this cheap shot and when Daley wants to go, he backs up against and ducks behind the referee.
Seriously, when this happened this should have been at least 10, a gamer and up to league for review. Cheap shots like this is what gives the NHL a bad name and "fans" like you who so proudly support and post this type of stuff should just give up on hockey and go to the ***** fights. - L0ADING, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1haha i read every comment just to see if anyone else noticed that picture. Thank you
- avirk86, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1Yes you guys rule, your "game" not sport, consistences of each team playing less than an average of one game per week (I include bye weeks as they are within a season), and no more than 20 games a season. Most of your fans spend more time watching commentators and annalists than actual games. Its really a joke
- CaviMike, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1You should take in a rugby game.
- CaviMike, on 12/27/2008, -4/+5You could have just posted:
And that's why we signed Georges Laraque. - CoreyHalliwell, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1"Hockey: One of the most manly sports around."
ONE OF.
Plus i think the shock value of hockey is in the fact that it's in the top televised north american sports( baseball, golf, football, basketball) that allows fighting. - Cerialthriller, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1fighting actually has a ton to do with the game. Learn about hockey you will see
- Cerialthriller, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1what bertuzzi did was never allowed in the NHL...
- dialectical, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2It sounds like your taking all your opinion from the crappy commentators. If this is not a sucker punch then I don't know what is. The fact that Robidas did NOT drop his gloves is pretty much proof of that.
Sadly, it looks like you are only watching what you want to see. @ 1:10 it is pretty clear Tootoo's stick is widely up with his two hands at Modano's throat\head. That IS a cheap shot. It's called taking a run at someone and that is NOT finishing your check especially since Modano had already dumped the puck out of his zone. You should watch it again without the fan goggles on and with a little more objectivity.
Robidas goes off on a stretcher and you are defending this guy? Sad. - teethandeyes, on 12/27/2008, -4/+5This is a good thing. Hockey got kind of gay for those few years when they attempted to keep fighting down.
It actually makes for a cleaner game with less cheap shots - adiggityam, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1God bless.
All I would do in Wayne Gretzky Hockey 64 was power-check until it was jersey-grabbin' face punchin' time. - Jacare, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2tootoo is just a dirty dirty player whose too small to actually fight other enforcers so he just cheap shots people, if hes gonna play like that then he doesn't belong in the NHL. he should have gotten more than a 5 game suspension for that. i hope someone delivers a scott stevens-esque hit on him sometime in the near future.
