A: Dunno - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -17/+142I guess this explains Ann Coulter's .....
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+70Because nipples form before the gender of the baby is determined.

- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+64Geez people, it's because the nipples are formed long before the hormones that determine gender are released.
You realize you're on the internet RIGHT NOW. It takes like two seconds to find this stuff out. - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65It's got apple in the title, that's about all it takes to get on there.
- illt, on 10/12/2007, -15/+68men having nipples is proof we're unintelligently designed.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -9/+58You heartless bastard, I was going to make that joke.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -13/+58Because God created nipples and they were fortunate enough to make it onto the ark.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51Now someone post a pic of Ann Coulter's penis.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -12/+48So that "girl" i kissed in that parade... could still be a girl?
Because those pictures kinda got me in trouble... - Grym11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Hmmm... It's a hard structure situated around a delicate and sensitve part of the body... What could it's function possibly be? I guess we'll NEVER know what it's there for. One of the mysteries of the human experience to forever remain obscured...
From Wikipedia:
"The thyroid cartilage ["Adam's Apple"] forms the bulk of the anterior wall of the larynx, and serves to protect the vocal folds ("vocal cords") which are located directly behind it. It also serves as an attachment for several laryngeal muscles."
Come on Digg... you're better than this. - Hellomoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29WHy are long pants long?
I mean if you want to get technical we can go all day. - KayinNasaki, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32Q: Why do we have them?
A: To identify transsexuals. - sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Ann Coulter looks more like a transsexual than a woman.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26@diggywiggit

If corn oil is made from corn and peanut oil is made from peanuts...what is baby oil made from? - Mugsleymug, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20What the hell is this crap? It doesn't tell anything, two paragraphs of nothing. Worst thing I've seen on digg front page in my 3 weeks of visiting.
- JSTSUPERSIZEIT, on 10/12/2007, -27/+43Why do men have nipples?????

if vegetarians eat vegetables, what to humanitarians eat? - quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15well actually men can breast feed. in some island cultures men breast feed more than women.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Yeah--why bring actual content into an article when you can rehash a half-paragraph of bland, useless facts and still get dugg?
- insidesource, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Just remember when on a date:
"if she's got an apple, she's got a banana" - xedicate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@dblood
to oversimplify the matter: the chromosomes determine the amount of hormones produced, which in turn determines what sex is manifested phenotypically - do you get ovaries or testes and the like. - mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9you better go to the doctor if you think you have 2 adam's apple's because thats just not normal. you might have a tumor or something.
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11so we can tell the females from the shemales, duh
- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That's actually the title of a book. Great read in the bathroom.
"Why Do Men Have Nipples"
http://www.amazon.com/Nipples-Hundreds-Questions-Doctor-Martini/dp/1400082315 - merr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Because they came from Hamburg, Germany... sort of.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger#Precursors_and_origins - undersky, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13btw my undergrad major was in genetic/developmental biology, i can tell you how hormone determines sex in very easy, elementary school level way.
out of 23 pairs of chromosomes, 1 pair is the sex chromosome, and the only chromosome that differs between sexes.
for male, the sex chromosome has two different (heterogeneous) chromotids: x and y. for female, they are both x.
as the name suggests, sex chromosomes contains genes that has to do with sex, such as gonad development, etc.
since female only has x, x contains everything that a female needs for sexual development.
since male also have x, basically every gene that x encodes for the women, it will encode in guys as well.
so u ask me, "mr. undersky, you mean the x gene that make women women, also is working in my body and making me women?"
yes, x gene that make women develop ovary, breast, etc, also do the same thing in male.
what male has extra is the y chromatid in which it either encode extra gene to express additional informaiton/function, or genes that inhibit function induced by x.
in conclusion, by default we are all women/female, because we all have x. the addition of y makes the default state into male, by turning on and turning off key steps in development.
understandably y is much, much smaller than x, for it doesn't have much information/gene. as i said, x determines the overall sexual development, y is more for regulatory purpose on male.
one last thing, female has two x, guys have one x, meaning female will express twice much of information that x governs. this is very dangerous, this is an imbalance that will be fatal. but our body, actually, when we were still at few cells stage, all women underwent x-chromosome inactivation in which every single cell of the body, on the sex chromosome, one of the x is inactivated (by methylation). the specificity is completely random and passed-on to the cell's daughter cells, so as cells divide and increase, what we will see is cluster of cells that have the same x chromatid inactivated located together.
if there is a bodily appearance different (phenotype) that is linked to the x chromatid, we will see it as patch on the skin, because all those cells in that patch area were originated from the same cell that had the x-inactivation.
jeez it's so hard to explain, didn't think i did a good job, it's all from my head and it's 2am, maybe u can look up this on wiki. good night - changyang1230, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thyroid cartilage
- slicknick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Coins are round so they can be spun on edge.
Why are bellybuttons called 'buttons' when really they're more like bellyholes for most? - kibblesnbitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This made the frontpage? That's ridiculous.
- rokinroj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@dcipjr & Tobey are right :-)
I read the book mentioned above and that is exactly what the doctors who wrote it claim. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah, we're all girls in our mother's womb until a fairly late stage in embryonic development. Then the penis pops out for boys. Or in Ann Coulter's case, when you're 37.
- undersky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i think you guys touch a subject called the inconsistency of English language. ha ha ha, when i studied foreign language such as Greek and Hebrew my professors always compared English with other languages saying how much easier it is to study other languages because they make more senses. I have heard most of your examples in my class!
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nipple
LOL NIPPLES - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4nah, ***** you guys, it's just really awesome. i've been getting calls non-stop about how much people love the double-apple.
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'd give you credit if man and woman looked extremely different.
But as you know, when babies are born, except the genitals, they almost look the same, be it male or female.
Wouldn't you agree? - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"men having nipples is proof we're unintelligently designed."
I like having nipples, thank you very much. - mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5keep thinking that.
- scojerroc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it happened twice before you posted. perhaps you should have looked for it instead of waiting for it.
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So Ann Coulter is a man!
- akzidenzgrotesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2are you talking about testicles? because if that was a joke, obviously, it worked about as well as john kerry's.
and if it wasnt a joke, then, well, that's pretty wierd. could you post a picture, becuase i kind of want to see that... - andydickme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My name is Adam!
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The adam's apple is probably a way to ensure the structural rigidity of the voice box so it doesn't collapse because your vocal chords are to strong.
- ryMac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3so why is this new news?
- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe they where called Freedom Patties in 1942
