- Nougat, on 12/29/2007, -0/+71I caught my two year old daughter eating dirt one day. As I was washing it out of her mouth, I asked her "What? Are you a worm or a little girl."
"... I'M A WORM!" - allaboutdatiki, on 12/29/2007, -1/+43Minerals!
- acrodev, on 12/29/2007, -1/+29Zero mention of the complex interaction of microorganisms in the gut, and the fact that dirt contains lots of organic living material which can reset and aid the digestive process. See http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/07040 ... for more info on how dirt can affect people.
- lazerus9, on 12/29/2007, -0/+23Should you wash your hands before you eat your dirt?
- nano19, on 12/29/2007, -3/+25Yeah because everywhere I go I see people eating dirt.
- banmaster, on 12/29/2007, -3/+24You shouldn't go to McDonalds then.
- phnx0221, on 12/29/2007, -1/+20Lol, when I was a kid I ate dirt quite a bit, that and grass. I don't really know why, I always liked the feeling, smell, and taste of it. Not so much now, but the memory of it is still fun. :)
- nyx210, on 12/29/2007, -0/+16"The dirt cannot be dirty," Young explains.
Oh really? - banmaster, on 12/29/2007, -2/+17Animals eat elephants??
- spect3r, on 12/29/2007, -1/+12I've never heard that before.
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -0/+11Because its free with my McDonalds order
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -1/+12Oh snap.
- angrycat, on 12/29/2007, -0/+11I CAN HAS DIRT?
NOM NOM NOM - HYPEractive, on 12/29/2007, -2/+12Clinically, it's called "pica." One reason theorized is due to an iron-deficiency anemia that some pregnant women have, or a hookworm infestation
- spyd3rweb, on 12/29/2007, -2/+12To compensate for the lack of vitamins and minerals in our junk processed food?
- mokayogi, on 12/29/2007, -2/+12Right I know that one! It's by the same guy who said, " You can make asinine quotes out of anything you read."
- triblinator, on 12/29/2007, -2/+12It's not a mystery at all; there is solid reasoning for why people do this. It has something to do with a mineral deficiency and it's the same reason that people compulsively eat ice - I have not the effort to prove this which I believe to be fact to an anonymous group of viewers, but surely wikipedia knows.
- SiNN4R, on 12/29/2007, -1/+10This is the weirdest comment thread ever.
- erad222, on 12/29/2007, -4/+13People also eat ***** for others to get off to but no one questions that...
- cowsgonemadd3, on 12/29/2007, -0/+8Our cows LOVE and I mean LOVE fresh red dirt. Sometimes they come back from the field or even when they leave the barn with muddy mouthes as they have eaten dirt. Its for the minerals I was told. Same reason a dog eats grass for like sickness and vitamins.
- PolarBearFire, on 12/29/2007, -2/+9A lot of animals eat dirt, like elephants.
- Typhoon2009, on 12/29/2007, -2/+9I wouldn't eat dirt, unless it was like home-grown dirt. God knows what's in the dirt at the park where all the dogs ***** and piss. And since you can't grow dirt, I'm out of luck :(
- lhbaker, on 12/29/2007, -2/+9So the phrase 'Eat Dirt, Motherf*cker' can now be considered sage advice. Sweet.
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -0/+6I grew up in Georgia where kaolin is mined.
Many is the time I saw black folks eating it. They called it "white clay" or sometimes "white dirt" and claimed it would cure what ails you. Once when I was sick, an old black lady up the road made me eat it (under the threat of warming my ass a few degrees) and damned if I didn't get better. Maybe it was because I didn't want to eat more. Unfortunately my grandma was good friends with her, saw that it worked, and picked up on the idea.
I've read that it's a common practice in parts of Africa, so I figure it must've come from there. It does a good job of stopping diarrhea too. - DephexTwin, on 12/29/2007, -0/+6No one questions that? Really?
- SiNN4R, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5You could sterilize the dirt using a pressure cooker people do that for mushroom substrates.
- aelias, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5Who do people eat dirt? Simple bastard.
Any 8 year old will tell you; "Because it's delicious!" - enicholas, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5And you're basing the assertion that it's "very good for you" off of what evidence, exactly?
- ZachSka87, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5Ya rly.
- DephexTwin, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5Is this what you tell the women to get them to go along with it?
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Well. Whaddaya know? I did a quick search and found this:
http://whitedirt.samsbiz.com/ - TheDreadDiggerD, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Parasites in the womb are parasites out of the womb until they come of age. Then they're hosts!
- jakepratt, on 12/29/2007, -3/+7My mom told me she ate dirt when she was pregnant with me. I never believed her until she proved it by eating some for me...I was disgusted...but I believed her then. I thought it was just her though.
- dvdt101, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4No wai
- DephexTwin, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Science failed! Go creationism!!!
- osbjmg, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3Yea, I'll take vitamins.
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4Elephants eat dirt?
- rayxtime, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3Well specifically, Geophagy is the practice of eating dirt, while vileo is an addiction to dirt.
- Treshnell, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3Eating the dirt leads to deficiencies. FTA: "This led to a significant reduction in available iron, zinc and copper in the mud bath, which is in line with one of Young's observations on Pemba: many loam-lovers were anemic and had conspicuously low levels of iron in their blood."
- sixsidepentagon, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4So now there's three names for it?
Doesn't the article say that it causes anemia. And don't call babies hookworms, they don't become brats until they're about 2 days old. - KingGorilla, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3elephants are a kind of dirt?
- DephexTwin, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3Well, there is also the name "dirt-eating". For some reason things only become real words when they are literally translated into Latin (geo-phagy).
- vikki77, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3I wanted to eat potting soil really bad when I was pregnant. I wasn't anemic either. It just looked yummy.
- Gustav, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3It might also be related to gizzard stones, which is when certain animals eat dirt to aid in digestion. Perhaps it is an evolutionary remnant of that, or even a useful way to ensure that food is completely digested.
- beargrylls, on 12/29/2007, -2/+5I wasn't aware people eat dirt...
- varun1s, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4Perhaps we share this trait with other mammals. For example, certain elephant species are knowon to dig up dirt in swamplands for the sole purpose of eating. I believe it provides nutrients, especially certain elements like iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium, that prevents deficiency.
- sixsidepentagon, on 12/29/2007, -1/+3So they are composed of gas? So that's why I always get gassy after I eat rice!
- dasdef, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2yeah i love colin mcrae's dirt. such a great game.
oh wait what? -
