- dumass4u, on 02/27/2009, -0/+39It's called the 'Stop eating so much food ya stupid fat bastard diet.'
- voyetra8, on 02/27/2009, -0/+38There is an overweight person that I know who always talks about how "I barely eat anything. All I had today was a salad. My metabolism is so slow, I just pack on the weight."
Protip: You're getting the energy/calories to support your massive size from somewhere, and it's sure as ***** not photosynthesis. - austang, on 02/27/2009, -1/+28So instead of eating 20 twinkies a day, I guess I'll have to get lean and only eat 16 instead. Oh the sacrifices I make for my body.
- plecostomus, on 02/27/2009, -2/+1990 minutes of exercise per week seems kind of minimalistic to me. When I was first starting to diet/exercise I was doing 2 hours every day. I've managed to cut that down to 1.5 hours per day (30min aerobic/30min weight training/30min whatever-- usually a mix of stretching/yoga and aerobics depending on what I feel like doing) as I literally don't have the time to spare on weekdays and I lose 1 to 1.5lbs a week. If I slack off a little bit (I did once after my grandfather died) I start regaining within a week. But that's still a huge lifestyle change, especially if you are doing work/school/extracurriculars at the same time. Most of the people in this study failed to lose even 10% of their body weight, and that's with a controlled diet and a support group.
Keeping a diary of what you eat is very, very important. It's so easy that you readily forget to do it, so you have to make it an automatic response. I cut down on snacking by huge amounts after I started keeping a diary.
The only other thing I can think of is that I switched from not eating all day and eating a gigantic meal at night to eating a huge breakfast, slightly smaller lunch, and either finished off with a few afternoon snacks or ate a small dinner. Eating a big breakfast in particular made me feel much better throughout the day, though I can't say whether that was authentic or only a placebo effect.
If you are a parent, please take the time to educate your children about exercise-- get them on a daily regimen early (it's good for you, too)! I think that would contribute more good to the obesity crisis than a bunch of 20-30+ year olds struggling to lose even 10 or 20 lbs. - Frankyfan3, on 02/27/2009, -1/+16So THAT's what I've been doing wrong!
I had it reversed in my head. No wonder. - GeeksSpeakFont, on 02/27/2009, -3/+18eating less is probably an important weight loss strategy, but one that's pretty hard to discipline yourself to follow...
- snareguy17, on 02/27/2009, -0/+12Just because a food says fat free doesn't mean you can eat five of them and not worry about putting on weight.
- kisforkat, on 02/27/2009, -2/+11I used to be 230 lbs. A year ago I started a 1000 calorie a day diet and a 3 mile run every morning. Now I'm about 150 :-) It's true. Diet and exercise - REAL diet and REAL exercise - are the best and only way to lose weight.
- buddyw, on 02/27/2009, -0/+990 min a week is better than 0 min a week. Not everyone has the dedication (or the time) to exercise 2 hours a day. For many it is an unrealistic expectation and even trying will cause them to fail and quit.
Exercise. Do so as much as you can. Make your regimen realistic and sustainable. You are going to be doing this for the rest of your life. - Dested, on 02/27/2009, -1/+10Oh, Onion, you've got me again.
- Anth0n, on 02/27/2009, -0/+9I dugg you up because you are correct. But there's a hormone called leptin that tells the brain when you're full. Like insulin, people can become leptin resistant by eating crappy food, making it take longer for them to feel full. By avoiding sugary foods and eating healthy in general, you can normalize leptin levels, thus requiring less food to feel satisfied.
So following that strategy, people CAN eat less without requiring the discipline of keeping themselves hungry all the time. - ahhell, on 02/27/2009, -0/+8LOL
- ilovegarnet, on 02/27/2009, -0/+890 minutes a week is 15 minutes a day with one day off. This is to show people that small changes is all what it takes to have more control over your health.
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -1/+9Everyone knows calorie restriction works but it all comes down to what you eat. Fruits and vegetables are what you should eat.
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -0/+7I've shed 41 lbs (as of today) in the last 4 months with this earth shattering diet: eat less, exercise more. I pretty much eat what I ate before (except I gave up soda completely)...I just don't stuff my face anymore. BUT, I eat 5-6 times a day now. You have to keep the body mildly fueled all day to lose weight. Starving it won't work.
Pretty shocking, huh? - recruz, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6I'm a nazi too- why? Because I care about being educated.
@sweetpickle:
loose, as in my pants are too big for me, they are very loose.
lose, as in if you do not win the game, you lose the game.
lost, the past tense of "lose", as in, we lost the game yesterday.
loss, as in, if my parents died, I would have sustained a heavy loss.
Sorry, but I have to adjust your entire post:
"You said that you slacked off for one week and gained weight. That is almost impossible. With the amount of exercise you do each day you will most likely LOSE weight because of the muscle loss. You lose weight when you first start exercising, then you hit a plateau where your weight remains constant. I don't know what kind of diet you are on but there is no way you gain weight if you stop exercising for a week." - jsep, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6Stop buying new pants!
If you don't buy new pants, you'll be forced to fit into your current pants and you won't get fat. Ultimate diet plan. - recruz, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6this is a great diet
- DiggzDE, on 02/28/2009, -0/+6The best diet is a planned one. And by diet I don't mean a weight-loss strategy for eating. Planning my meals in advance (a week at a time), I have not only been able to eat healthier (while still loving what I eat) but I have been able to save money as well.
Most people know what their weekly schedule consists of. If you do, take part of your weekend to sit down, find healthy recipes and plan out exactly what you are going to eat this next week. From breakfast, to snacks and lunch, to dinner. Go buy what you dont have and enjoy the next week and make small adjustments throughout the week if needed.
Seriously, has worked for me so far. - inactive, on 02/27/2009, -2/+8Well duh!
- stellarceltic, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6Eat slower = feel full faster = eat less
- pilot3033, on 02/27/2009, -0/+5LOSE, loss, lose
/nazi - babyheadout, on 02/27/2009, -2/+7CNN.com article today titled: How to get Michelle Obama's toned arms.
Um...chop them off? - borschwanger, on 02/27/2009, -0/+4the best part of the atkins diet is that atkins himself was overweight, had heart disease, and suffered a heart attack early and another may have contributed to his death.
- PorcusWallabee, on 02/27/2009, -0/+4I think, above all, we have to start appreciating our food more. Next time you sit down to eat, pretend that <this> is the only meal you will have for the next 2 days. Eat it slowly and savor it.
- woodrow8292, on 02/27/2009, -2/+6It amazes me that somewhere someone was paid to do this study. Think about that someone was paid to come to the conclusion that eating less will make you loose weight. Where do I get this job?
Just breaking news: A new study confirms that when you are tired, sleep is the best thing to help. - nadalbg, on 02/27/2009, -1/+5Eating less food helps, but the best diet is sport. Go and run 5 kms every day and you will see what a good diet is.
- DaltonZ, on 02/27/2009, -0/+4Yes, to lose weight, stop eating. Stop eating, and lose your fat and all of your muscle as well. Do a bunch of aerobic exercises while starving yourself, lose even more muscle. People need to stop worrying about WEIGHT and worry about their body fat percentage. The best way to lower this is not to starve yourself and run 10 miles a day.
You have to eat enough to effectively lose weight without losing muscle, and you HAVE TO lift weights if you want the most effective body recomposition. Lifting weights is more important than any aerobics you will be doing for a couple of reasons.
The first, is that when you lift weights, you gain muscle. This muscle then burns fat. So instead of starving yourself and doing a bunch of cardio, which will just make you smaller but no less fat, you will replace lost fat with gained muscle. This will increase your metabolism and lower your body fat percentage.
The second is that lifting weights, along with HIT and other anaerobic excercises actually burn more calories than running or other aerobic excercises. Your metabolism will be higher while you workout, and will continue to stay at a heightened level for a substantial amount of time. You'll not only burn more calories while you workout, you'll burn more calories at rest.
However, diet is the most important aspect of losing weight, and starving yourself is not the way to go. You have to eat enough for your body to continue to metabolize the food in an efficient manner, and you have to give yourself enough nutrients to stop muscle atrophy. Muscle atrophy, which I stated before, will cause you to lose not just fat but muscle, which hinders the lowering of your body fat percentage. Starving yourself may make you weigh less, but you'll have less muscle, and the lack of nutrients will make every organ in your body perform at a lower level.
A lot of people have major, major misconceptions of what it takes to lose weight, and also what the ultimate goal when losing weight is. You shouldn't just try to weight less, you should simply try to lower your body fat percentage. And you shouldn't starve yourself for quick results, you should eat plenty every day, while lifting weights and excercising, to completely recompose your body and become not just skinny, but ultimately healthy. - MScrip, on 02/28/2009, -0/+4I used to dance at a theme park during summer... outdoors. I was in a clogging show. Soaked in sweat after the 5 shows a day.
We did 90 minutes of clogging... EVERY DAY. Needless to say, after the summer... I was skinny!
I miss having to exercise for work!
I also clogged in college... about 10 hours of rehearsal each week. So plenty of exercise then too. I miss being young! - faithfreedom, on 02/27/2009, -0/+4I lost 10 pounds over a period of one and half month. The principle is simple: "Eat to live, not live to eat". I eat many times per day, eat only when I felt hungry. I ate just enough to for the hungry to go away. I eat less meat, more vegetables.
Once you can control how much you eat, you can control your weight. And it's good on the food expense as well. - ipushmycar, on 02/27/2009, -0/+4Actually, eating MORE is a better way to lose weight. Eat 5-8 times a day, small healthy meals. There should be protein and a small amount of healthy fats with every meal. Concentrate starchy carbs earlier in the day and around times of exercise. At night, cut the carbs down and just add a small amount of fibrous veggies to your meals.
I've found that the best way to lose weight is to eat at about your BMR/RMR. It's important to exercise at least 4 days a week... weight lifting is just as important as cardio, if not more. The increase in metabolism from eating more meals, weight lifting, and cardio will shed the fat like crazy, and leave you with a nice, toned body. A simple calorie cutting diet with a little cardio thrown in is just going to leave you with an unattractive, skinnyfat body that really isn't a whole lot better then being overweight to begin with.
Also, drink as much water as possible. Stop drinking soda... a little diet (0 calorie) soda a day won't hurt but if it's not diet, you're not going to lose weight efficiently. A diet like this will not keep you hungry and is actually easier to follow, not to mention the proper nutrition will make you happier and more energetic.
I went on a proper diet like this 2 years ago and my body has changed immensely. Just takes dedication. - Kytro, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3Just because it has fat does not mean it makes you fat. Fat is a more dense from an energy perspective though
- MattB123, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3For just losing weight this is true, but to be really healthy it may not be. I'm a healthy weight and athletic but I have high cholesterol mostly due to genetics. I have to be really careful about what I eat so my arteries don't get clogged, but a lot of people don't get it when I turn down bad foods.
"You? You don't have to worry about that! Have some fries!" - Khiva, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3***** you, my dad was killed doing photosynthesis.
- chiqui3, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3FAT FREE usually means 'full of HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP'. Processed foods are full of it. Thats why America is fat
- ripter, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3I think you missed the part where they tried a bunch if different diets. The study wasn't if you just eat less, but if one diet was more effective over another. Is a diet that had a lot of red meat better than a diet that focuses on whole grains? From a pounds lost point of view, no.
- wickedseahorse, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3all i read was the word "duh".... one after the other after the other....
- Scira, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/e4/
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -1/+4Uh yeah, you completely missed the point of the study. There STILL EXISTS the calorie threshold below one should not diet. Nobody is arguing about that, much less this study.
What this study DOES ADDRESS is that specific macromolecule diets (like the atkins) are a crock of *****. - inactive, on 02/27/2009, -3/+6Ah yes, the swan song of the fat and lazy.
"I may as well lay on this couch all day and eat potato chips because even if I do move around, my metabolism is slow so screw it".
*****. So people with slower metabolisms (really thats hardly ever what it is, really its just validation for laziness, sorry kiddo) have to move around more. Oh well, now live with it. - inactive, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3Yes, what I am about to say is pretty obvious, but there are some out there that are taking this study as a signal to hit the unhealthy food.
The only thing this study says is that calories matter in LOSING WEIGHT.
Specific diet DOES matter when considering other health effects. It may not matter when considering weight if you eat the same calorie value in burgers/fries/twinkies versus salads/fish/fruit, but there are a ***** of other negative effects to the former diet. - chesscat, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3You don't state your age but try doing that when your over 40--like me. I go every other day for 45 minutes (about 30 mins of that is cardio). That's about 180 minutes a week. 90 mins 2 hrs a day may be fine if your 20 something about unrealistic for most people.
- spoonchucks, on 02/28/2009, -0/+31000 calorie a day? Who am I, Twiggy? ***** THAT.
- Pyros7, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3I lost 50 pounds a few years ago simply by cutting my calories back. Sadly, most of my coworkers seemed astonished to learn that if you consume less calories you lose weight. It really wasn't that hard.
1 - Use an online calculator to estimate how many calories you need to maintain your weight.
2 - Cut that number by 500 (never eat less than 1,000 calories or so a day).
3 - 500 calories a day x 7 days a week = 3500 calories cut = 1 pound a week weight loss
4 - Monitor your weight and adjust accordingly.
The problem most people without active lifestyles have is that they are eating 3-4000 calories a day, when in fact they only need 1,500-2000 to maintain their weight. So yes, it's an enormous shock to learn that you need to cut your calorie consumption in half just to make your ass stop growing. Stick with it, the hunger pangs go away once you get used to it in a few weeks. After that you'll feel fantastic and "cheating" with a big mac will make you want to throw up. - inactive, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3I have a very slow metabolism. Well, more like a backwards metabolism. My circadian rhythm is reversed so my metabolism is highest when it'd be lowest for most people, at around 3:30 am. What this means for me is that when I have to stick to a normal pattern for school or work, exercising moderately works like doing nothing, and I gain weight easily during the day. I keep trim, but I also exercise upwards of 3 hours per day, and I gain weight eating normally.
Conversely to this, I can eat before I go to sleep and not gain weight, and in the summer I am able to reverse and stay awake all night and sleep all day, and not only do I feel better, I lose lots of weight maintaining the same habits. - spoonchucks, on 02/28/2009, -0/+3Swing and a miss...
- DaltonZ, on 02/27/2009, -1/+4That's actually *****, buddy. Diet is, by far, the most important part of losing weight. That being said, you have to incorporate diet AND excercise for optimum results.
- Kytro, on 02/28/2009, -0/+2It is far easier to cut calories in most cases than it is to burn them. Fat people can't run 5km usually. In fact many would have trouble running 500m.
Exercise certainly has it's benefits, but when attempting to lose weight as an unfit and unhealthy person it is best used for conditioning rather than weight loss as you need a fair amount to burn lots. - inactive, on 02/28/2009, -0/+2If one is trying to lose weight, then both exercise and diet need to be incorporated effectively.
But of the two, exercise is by far the most important. By expending a lot of calories (creating a calorie imbalance, leading to weight loss), and raising your muscle mass and cardiovascular capacity (which in turn raise your calorie requirements, leading to further weight loss) - starcasm, on 02/28/2009, -0/+2Are you Lindsay Lohan?
