- euarchonta, on 11/13/2007, -10/+122I would rather have my daily glass of canola oil than the handful of jellybeans.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+91The American Public School system taught me what a gram is. Quit pretending Americans are unaware of the metric system.
- ippersiel, on 10/24/2007, -1/+79I'm sure all the potheads know a gram :)
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+68Weird, in the UK we're taught the metric system and deal pot in ounces
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -4/+61mmmm graham crackers
- MattyBruce, on 10/12/2007, -11/+60I would rather have the 54grams of jelly beans than the 1425grams of celery.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30We're assuming that you're on planet earth.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36Too bad I hate celery. I'd rather eat the 1425 grams of ass than celery.
- rayishu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29who else saw this list and saw the pictures then went to get something to eat?

- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28If I learned anything from this, it's that Americans have no idea what Smarties are.
Real Smarties: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties_%28Nestl%C3%A9%29
Rockets: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties_%28Ce_De_Candy%29 - HisTumness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@Abatrour
I assume you're getting American Smarties confused with the candy-coated chocolate candy sold outside of the United States by Nestlé.
Not everyone on Digg is American, I know, but the person who posted these pictures apparantly is. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17a US nickel weighs almost exactly 5 grams
just my 2, er 5 cents. - WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16@tyger
thanks to drugs I can not only measure in metric but convert to customary :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"Sadly, calorie counters almost never help people determined to lose weight."
That is so not true. Speaking for Americans, many are fat because they're not aware of how much they're actually consuming. We're fat because of A) what we eat and B) portion sizes. Get a salad at Olive Garden and imagine you're eating right and yet get more fat and calories than a Big Mac in the dressing. And notice the chicken sandwich actually had more calories than the cheeseburger!
Unless that calorie counter is running in the back of your head all the time, you're going to stay overweight. There's nothing magic about weight loss. Burn more than you consume, you'll lose weight. Eat more than you need, you'll gain weight. Dinosaurs were big boned, you're just fat. So put down the fork and back away slowly. With apologies to Dennis Leary for borrowing his line.
I wish they'd add more pictures for more foods. Very interesting. - Namco, on 10/24/2007, -24/+37That's awesome. Now I just have to get into the practice of weiging everything I eat in grams. I have no idea what a gram is...I'm American!

- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17WTF are rockets? Those are indeed Smarties in that picture. Reference: http://www.smarties.com/
- YHCIR, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19How many times have we been here?
Duggmirror checks the referring URL and displays the appropriate page. Therefore linking to diggmirror.com is the same as posting the actual link. - Spytap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11How many calories would that be?
- swgc5, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Crappy American Smarties, Nestle Smarties are much better.
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Here in Canada, those pictures are correct. Here, Smarties are almost identical to peanut-less M&M's, and Rockets are those tiny sugar candies.

- MichaelLord, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Are there any self-respecting Canadians?
- jrlittlejr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm a physician, and would disagree with the "recommendation" that we should eat 2000-2500 calories per day. That is part of the reason Americans are so obese. 1800 kcal is a more reasonable level for most people.
Another tip I give patients:
If you eat 1 pat of butter a day more than your bodies metabolic needs, you will gain about 10 pounds in a year. You don't have to pig-out to gain weight. The small stuff adds up. So get rid of your gynormous mocha frapuccino (which has about one third of your TOTAL daily calories in just that one drink) and drink water instead! And watch the movie "Supersize Me".... should be mandatory viewing for anyone who eats fast food. - ahudson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Not if you have referrers turned off, you should turn them off too unless for some reason you just really like people tracking your movements on the web.
Here is a good plugin for turning them off, also pretty easy to turn them on and off just for certain sites.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/953/
A plugin like this is pretty critical for web developers, otherwise lots of information about what you are working on will leak out. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the nifty hacks people have found for google were a result of looking through apache logs at traffic that comes from google's ip addresses.
I never understood exactly what problem people have against the longer version of the duggmirror links. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Look, posting the full link works for people with and without referrers enabled. Posting duggmirror itself only works for those with referrers enabled. You lose nothing from posting the full link, so why not? Yeah, it's a nifty trick, but the full links are simply more useful.
- rubicante, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Your mom has four stomachs.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"i cant see why straight alcohol is so full of calories"
Alcohol breaks down into sugars as you digest it, IIRC. Also, consider the most basic way to test something for caloric content: setting it on fire. Alcohol burns amazingly well. - Mufflegrump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Damn nerds! A nickel is 5 cents! :)
- elsewhen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9many of the pictures are what you would predict, but the biggest surprise to me are the fruit loops (heads over to pantry)
- whereisian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Reese's Pieces beat M&M's and Smarties - hands down.
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8i thought i heard somewhere that celery was a negative caloric food. it takes more calories to chew and digest the food than the calories it gives your body.
- Conwaysb0718, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I thought cows had four stomachs.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6That Fiber One cereal looks just like mealworms. You be the judge:

I was so confused and dishearten when I tried to buy smarties while up there, US. smarties are so much better then elsewhere smarties. - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You'll be fine.
My girlfriend bought a bag of chocolate covered coffee beans a while back. I'd say there were probably about 50 in the bag. Anyway, her dog got into her room and ate them. Now, dogs aren't supposed to have chocolate at all, and I very much doubt that much coffee is good for them (and I myself rarely eat more than three in an entire day, when I DO have them). Anyway, the dog was mostly fine if I remember right. Just reallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreally wanted to run when she was taken for a walk. Point being, if a smallish animal (that isn't even supposed to eat chocolate) can get away with THAT, you should come through it just fine. Unless you weigh like 90 lbs.
Not hard to go through that many Kisses, though. The foil is lined with crack, I swear. - grantmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Somewhat related but, SparkPeople has a great free calorie counter tool http://sparkpeople.com/myspark/mysparkcal.asp so you can find how many calories are in those other foods you're eating so you can stay on top of your New Year's Resolutions

- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Are there any self-respecting Canadians?"
*raises hand*
And I'd just like to say that the US is missing out. M&Ms just aren't the same IMO. - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Okay....who else thought these were Larvae before reading the caption?
http://www.wisegeek.com/images/calories/calories-in-fiber-one-cereal-s.jpg - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A good overview. One caveat, though: Splenda (sucralose) doesn't have any calories in and of itself; the calories in the yellow packets come from the dextrose and/or maltodextrin that's used to dilute the sweetener, which is hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. The nutritional content for each packet weighs in at at about 4 calories and 1g carb.
- kevinarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, if you were referring to a box of calories that could be viewed as individual entities, you'd be correct, but since you're referring to a quantity of "200 Calories" being a measure of the size of an item, I believe it's correct as stated.
Ex.
"Show me what 12 meters look like"
"Show me what 12 meters looks like"
Here too, the latter is correct. '12 meters' is a single measurement, just like '200 calories' is a single measurement. - zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you actually paid attention to the commercial (and the wee-man in the commercial): Bacardi and Diet Coke = 0 carbs
(and I think he even adds 0 sugar)
And then he parties on with the babes... - CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6depends on who's ass...
- tripm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mealworms taste better though.
- Eliminator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed. I wonder how many mealworms make 200 calories.
- Bytor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Interesting, Being in Canada, I always thought American had chocolate smarties as well...
- socalrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was listening to the radio yesterday on the way to work and they were talking about this, how you can eat all that Celery, all those Peas, a snack of Baby Carrots... All that being 600 calories, or you can eat 1 burger and some fries (small of course) and probably still be hungry afterwords. That's not including your Small Coke drink, which comes to 800 calories now....
Not that I'm gonna rush out pig out on carrots though.... -
