- DesolataX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44Choosing what you eat wisely can make a lot of difference, but getting out there and exercising in combination weight eating right can make you a whole lot healthier. I noticed a difference when I stopped eating fast food, started to work out and eat healthier food, and I feel MUCH better. I have a lot more energy and have lost quite a bit of weight from moving from my sedentary life to a slightly more active lifestyle, and it doesn't take much, also the meals I eat now take some preparation, but takes way better than McDonalds.
I also noticed that Kevin Rose submitted the story, wonder if he eats like this.. - Tokkii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Seriously.

Cooking instructions for Ramen noodles to make it more healthy... or at least less unhealthy.
1 Put noodles in pot of water. Cook until most noodles are soft. DO NOT ADD SOUP BASE!
2 Drain all water, basically all the chemicals you don't want are cooked "out" of the noodles and into the water.
3 Recook the noodles in either water or broth, depending on preference of flavor.
4 Prepare sauces: Soy sauce, half-salt, Shaoshing wine (cooking wine), whatever else you like.
5 Throw out the packets of sauces: they're bad for you.
And there you have a great bowl of noodles that took under 5 minutes to prepare, and yet still won't kill you.
Btw, it's not Ramen noodles, it's instant noodles. Ramen is actually a type of tradition Chinese/Japanese pasta that does not always comes in little packages. It just happened to be the flavour of instant noodles that someone once bought, became popularized, and the white folks start equating Ramen noodles to instant noodles. Imagine everyone calling Kraft Dinner "Italian pasta". - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19With a little creativity, ramen noodles aren't half-bad or bad for you...
Throw out the packet of salt...i mean, flavor...
Cook the noodles, drain the water...bring them back to the stove...with no added liquid... (btw, this works best in a wide pan/skillet)
Let them sit on the low heat for a while, moving them around, you're evaporating some of the water...
Put in some spices (i generally like a little garlic, little curry, and a little thyme...and a pinch of salt (always kosher for me...our diets have enough iodine in them now))
If you want some more texture, beat an egg first, and toss it in ... (think chinese fried rice, or pad thai .... eggs and noddles/rice rocks the socks)
Finish it off with a little sauce...soy is good, or a thai peanut dressing...
If your sauce adds alot of moisture, let it continue to cook for a bit, and try not to stir it too much, you want to let big sections of it carmelize a little, will bring alot more flavor out in the end...
Then just eat it, and its delicious... I would bet its notmuch more than 3-400 calories for that....and the noodles means its a very filling meal.
And as far as overall nutrition goes, the best tip: Stop taking other people's advice.
Everyone's health is different, everyones metabolism and digestive system acts different. Some people take more calories out of the food that they eat, some less...some people burn more calories than others at idle, and at work.
The only general rule of thumb is, To lose weight, you just have to burn more calories that you eat. Even with that though, there are variables...if you weight 300 lbs, and can manage to get by on 600 calories (its possible, ive done it, 3 slimfast shakes a day) ... you will find yourself very tired and it will be hard to workout and concentrate. If you dont give your body enough calories, it will act like you are starving and begin to conserve every bit of energy you have stored up (fat), which is even worse than eating too much, because it starts depriving your body of some near-essential stuff...and makes it very hard to lose any weight. - Wacer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@tokkii "I feel the same about cheese. Ever have the fat free stuff? It tastes like Satan and his toilet in my mouth. - offwithyourtv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18What do 300 calorie meals look like? Appetizers.
- mrmagos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Good lord, I hope he meant "...eating Denny's..."
Remember kids, proper spelling and punctuation is the difference between "I had to help my uncle Jack off a horse." and "I had to help my uncle jack off a horse." (Paraphrased from http://bash.org/?quote=367896) - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20same, coffee has no calories until you add milk, creamer, steamed foam, sugar or bacon bits.
- Codename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Have you ever seen those Hungry Man T.V. dinners, OMG, there's like 231% Cholesterol, it's just like a heart-attack in a box, here's a link to the back of the box.
http://www.x-entertainment.com/articles/0744/yucky.gif - Wacer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16@sofaking812 "How bad are Ramen noodles?"
Calories: 380
They are 38% of your Saturated Fat for a day so considering how puny the meal is and how much salt is in it. It ranks very low in healthy foods. - LeanenStreet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15daroach - the average person should consume 2000 calories per day. So if all you eat is 3 meals per day then you should eat 666 calories per meal (lol). If you are a 6'5 male you should obviously consume more, if you are a 5' tall female you should consume less. I believe their or calculators online to calculate how many calories you should consume based on height, weight etc.. You should also eat less or more depending on physical activity.
And yes, once you eat as many calories as you should in one day you should stop eating. I'm not really sure how that is confusing.
Eating right is huge, I've read many places (as well as my nutrition prof) that getting in shape is 70% diet and 30% physical activity. Fitday.com and thedailyplate.com are both very good calorie counting websites. - groovytrance, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Hmm, it is depressing, if you mean by the fact how distorted our take on portions are these days. Most people look at this and imagine starving to death, rather than realize that their stomachs are just stretched and accustomed to eating ginormous meals. Depressing, indeed.
- iChuckles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14300 calories is also an infinite amount of celery!

Ramen noodles are fried. They're terrible for you. - tpaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@desolatax
I've been trying to loose about 20 pounds for the past year and a half and it wasn't until I started eating smaller meals (a little smaller than the ones shown) more frequently (4-5 times a day) that I actually lost weight. The irony was that I started the meal habit around the same time I found myself without enough time in the day to visit the gym. I had been going fairly regularly for a year with minimal success but changing my diet really turned things around. - venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Is it just me, or does the "8 oz water" paired with the first meal look a little like coffee instead?
- pexor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Ah hah! That explains why eggs, bacon, and toast never filled me up. What a ripoff of a breakfast.
- sofaKing812, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17How bad are Ramen noodles? They can't be all that bad to eat a couple of time a week, can they? (I'm trying to be real positive on this one).
- theradical, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14i understand the merits of the food pyramid...that's why build them on my plate.
- leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Sorry...but who the ***** puts bacon in their coffee?
- CaptMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"I don't think there's a difference between 1 cal and 1 Cal. Generally it's called a kilo-calorie, or kcal and nutritionists, while referring to "calories", really are measuring kcals. If there is an SI difference between the two, it's largely worthless given its widespread misuse in non-scientific literature."
Wrong. A Calorie (capital "C") is a kilo-calorie (1000 calories for the non-metrically inclined). Look it up.

Also, for the questions of, "How much should a normal person eat?" The MyPyramid website can give you an estimate based on your age/sex/weight/activity level.
http://www.mypyramid.gov/mypyramid/index.aspx - SirTezzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@nergys:
What you burn in one day without any exercise is known as your Basal Metabolic Rate (B.M.R.). Here's a website where you can find a simple calculator to figure out your BMR: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ - There are also multiple other calculators on the internet which are more advanced and specific, if need be.
Using your B.M.R., and the Harris Benedict Equation, you can figure out your daily energy expenditure, which equates to how many calories you _generally_ need to maintain your current weight on a daily basis. Of course, everybody has a different body, so your real B.M.R. and daily energy expenditure may vary. - Hypermarkalan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'd think a cook with a little more creativity could have made those pictures a lot more appetizing. If you notice, each shot is from straight down, which is a 60's and 70's way of shooting food. Look at all cookbooks now and they shoot from the side. Makes the food more attractive and less science project looking.
- groovytrance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11hah. would you rather wash a couple plates a day, or be a chub-o that dies 20 years early?
- iloveroundtable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Notice all the water. No Soda.
- OUChevelleSS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Indeed this is healthier in itself because it increases metabolism.
- sdwilly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Been a while since I've seen it, but isn't that Requiem for a Dream?
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Maybe you have worms?
- sup34dog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11definitely. dugg up for the reference.
- LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What!? No burgers and fries? ;) Actually, this is an excellent primer, and if you choose your meals wisely, you can still get a lot of volume for your 300 calories. Still feel full, but not turning your butt to lard. Although, I suppose that I could follow my own advice and drop a few pounds, eh?
- noctu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8they should make this a poster and put it in all the classrooms because parents sure aren't setting any examples.
- Hayaemsay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I guess I am the only person here who weighs below 50Kg...
- BigglesPiP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Screw calories, I'm not overweight, and I can cycle the 2.5miles up hill to work in 15mins without breaking a sweat. Therefore, my diet is spot on.
- Tiran, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I think there is typo in the title. Its should say 300 calorie APPETIZERS. Those portions are just way to small and only like 1/3 of that food actually tastes good. And turkey bacon is just wrong.
