- TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I disagree with the throw the scale out thing. While I had my "war on fat" this summer and dropped forty pounds, I weighed myself daily to see my progress and make sure I was going in the right direction. I still weigh my self daily to make sure I am maintaining an equilibrium.
A tab bit obsessive? Perhaps, but after being over weight I do not want to go back and the price of slimness is eternal vigilance.
:p - phantom_mullet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Blog spam! Most of this info is just common sense wrapped up in nice neat AdSense banners.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Man, if I went to Germany I'd probably be drowning in bratwurst and beer my first day there. I'd have to go to some country where they serve monkey brains and as a main course and cow pies for dessert.
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I agree wholeheartedly. The thing that has kept me going is watching the steady progress with the scale. I even plot my weight in gnuplot and watch the linear regression. I have gotten into the habit of weighing in every morning and it really is the motivator that helps me avoid the ice cream or extra snacks.

not cool. no digg. - nybe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9adderall... covered by blue cross.
- TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed, I'm not continuing to lose weight now that I'm at where I'm supposed to be. I to find it interesting to see what happens whenever I eat X foods and do X amount of work. I try to keep my weight within 5 pounds of desired/recommended weight. What made me get over weight to begin with was I quit paying attention to what I was doing to my body. I find it easier just to observe myself everyday and remind myself that I cannot let food do that to me again.
If I notice that one weekend I gain some pounds, I can take measures to bring it back down, whereas before, I would just let it go and it would become my new "base" weight. Add some pounds every weekend and you start to gain pretty quick.
Soon I am going to have to start worrying more about specific foods and cholesterol, as my family has a past of heart disease and such. - bjammin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Is this digg or cosmo?
Coming soon, 8 ways to shag your best friends boyfriend! - TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6To lose the weight to get out of the overweight category al I had to do was cut soda out of my diet. Quit drinking 8-12 sodas a day, replaced it with water, and bam.
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yes, and loosing weight can be scary.

Then to your vegan friends I say: "Put down the Ranch dressing"
Oh yes, and "Eat meat. Millions of cows died so that you could enjoy a tasty meal. Don't dishonor them by not enjoying." - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5God, I've always wanted to ***** him! Those abs!
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Weight loss plan:
1) Do more exercise.
2) Eat less prepackaged food (cook your own as much as is reasonably possible).
3) Don't be a quitter. Weight loss is a permanent change, not something you do for a few months and then return to your old lifestyle.
4) Success.
It's really not that complex. - grammarpolice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6When I was a junior in college I lost 25 lbs in two and a half months PLUS I gained 10 lbs in muscle. No I didn't use steroids or drugs. Of course I didn't have Digg to take my time, but what I found out was that keeping myself fed all the time worked like a drug. What I did was wake up at 8 in the morning and drink a protein shake with milk and some string cheese. At 10 am I would eat a peanut butter sandwich with a drink( no soda, not even diet soda) at 1 pm I would eat 2 cups of yogurt mixed with berries, protein powder almonds, oats and milk. at 3 I would go for some milk, jerky, and peanuts. Then I would go to the library till about 9 and then go work out. I worked out 3 times a week with an hour of free weights and running 1 mile at the end. Make sure you work the big muscles, i.e. chest, legs, back, shoulders. I would then go home watch TV, Internet and drink a protein shake before I go to bed.
Just remember not to drink SODA. Even if it is diet soda, the sodium in the drink will make you retain water and skew your weight results making you think that you gained weight.
And to those who say " I will rather stick to aerobics to lose weight, I don't want to get big", tests have proved that working out the (big) muscles increases your metabolism for 48-50 hours after you work out. Compared to 2-3 hours from an aerobic exercise.
I know its hard but once you start seeing those results you don't want to stop. I think losing weight is the most addicting thing there is in this planet. It just feels SOO good. :)
Those are my two cents. I worked for me at least. . . - dizzledaking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"good thing I don't need to loose weight, I couldn't get past #1 because of the super ***** spelling of this article."
oh the irony! - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Everybody has a unique body. Some people have similar bodies. But all in all everyone has their own problems, and lose weight very different ways. That's why most weight loss programs end in failure. Because you're not doing what you need.
That being said, it's just common sense. You don't need a blogger to tell you that. You shouldn't be reading a blog anyways if you care that much about your health. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9@Software2
It's pretty ignorant to think everyone overweight overeats. I've seen plenty of vegans who never touched sugar, only drank water/tea, and ate nothing but salads retain all of their weight. Perhaps it was lack of exercise, but still. Consumption isn't always the flaw in your diet. - Hinph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The article says it is okay to indulge but not to overindulge, and that is fantastic advice. There is absolutely nothing wrong with eating a piece of cake or some pizza, for example, as an occasional treat and the reason diets fail many people is because they are too restrictive in this regard. What's the point of being alive if you don't indulge from time to time?
The article is all about making a bunch of small, permanent changes to your life that will collectively benefit you and result in weight loss and improved health... and, yes, it does take work, will power, and patience. - hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These are great "tips", but you have to have a solid foundation of proper diet, and proper excercise. You can't just cut back on food and expect to see any significant weight loss, unless you starve yourself, which will only make you fatter in the long run, and miserable all around. You also can't eat like a pig and think that you'll excercise it away. Avoid fad diets and fad excercise programs. Eat a simple balanced diet. Do about fifteen minutes of interval training for cardio, and fifteen minutes of weight training each day (that's 30 min a day). You can do this in your lunch breach and still fit in a good meal and a quick shower if you have a gym close by. This is how I lost 80 lbs. I wish I could package and sell this, because I'd make millions on what is just common sense.
- pgup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I suggest people sign up at http://www.fitday.com/ to monitor their caloric intake easily
- ski309, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I disagree noreturn. One of the biggest problems with dietting I've seen is that people quit the second they cheat. While you can't lose weight by cheating on your diet all the time, cheating every once in a while can keep you sane. Just don't let it go overboard.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8"It's pretty ignorant to think everyone overweight overeats"
You only get 50lbs overweight by eating 50lbs worth of food. That's a lot of salad. - Mutiny32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Man, yours might just be the best post here. After losing 71 pounds on a similar approach to yours, I know it works. Fad diets don't work, crash diets don't work, other people's diets don't work. A diet custom to YOU and you only works.
And I agree. It was addictive looking into the mirror and stepping onto the scale.
The only downside was how much I had to spend on new clothes! I went from a size 40 waist and XL shirts being tight to a 30-31" waist and medium shirts fitting me perfectly. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Soda is a big problem for a lot of people.
Water really is the only way to go. I know a lot of people swear by tea, and while tea is healthy and good for you on a semi-regular basis, it can also cause kidney stones due to the caffeine, so it's something to keep in mind. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nope. It's not that difficult at all. Eating healthy and excercise are the only "secret" to losing weight.
My cousin used to be a fat tub of lard and she lost all of her excess weight in about 2 years by walking and jogging every day and eating healthy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL. Thats the about the same routine I have. A good amount of animal and nut proteins, but a bit much on dairy for me. But about the soda part: It is a MUST to stop drinking the sweet nectar of the gods...
Also, make sure to get sleep. Many people overlook this, since after a hard session at the gym your muscles will recover in the sack. Even relaxing on the sofa is good.
Great job every one here with a common sense and some freaking will power. - noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28-12 sodas a day? You do realize that's almost two 2-liter bottles, don't you?
- h3llr4z0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think that blogger forgot to mention one of the quickest ways to start losing weight.
ie. eat 5-6 smaller healthy meals a day instead of having 3 big ones.
doing this helped me lose about 8kgs (about 17 pounds) in about a month.
trick is to eat healthy meals that fill you up (ie things with protein and complex carbs) rather than stuff that's high in sugar and fats.
"6 meals a day?!! yeah right" i hear u say. well its not that hard.
breakfast: something high in carbs and protein like cereal
mid morning snack: fruits, yogurt, protein shake, etc
lunch: high in carbs and protein like a mix of rice, pasta, red meat, vegies, white meat, etc
mid afternoon snack:fruits, yogurt, protein shake, etc
dinner: high in protein low in carbs like steak and vegies, tuna salad, etc
late night snack: no carbs like small serving of fruit, nuts or protein shake...
anyway didn't mean to write an essay :P
that's just what helped me get back on track... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I prefer the south beach parasite diet myself, it does have horrible effects on my skills with the ladies though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've got a better list. And mine's in all caps, too!
TOP 2 WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT:
1. PUT DOWN THAT GREASY PIZZA AND DIET COKE AND GRAB A SALAD.
2. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND RUN A FEW LAPS AROUND THE BLOCK. - loqui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I lost 50 pounds on the "hacker diet" http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/www/hackdiet.html designed by John Walker, the founder of Auto desk. It is definitely worth checking out.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Light stretching and Yoga"? How does that help losing weight? A "short walk after dinner"? You're going to have to do better than that, tubby.
- TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes. :D
- top5design, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with foobar5892...
1. Eat less (and better)
2. Exercise consistently
But I would add:
3. Drink so much water that you have to pee all day long.
Every "diet secret" is just a modification of these rules. Diet fads are just that...fads. These are the only things that ALWAYS work. - drpentode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got stuck in a situation where I had to stop working out (a neck injury) in the middle of losing weight. However, because of the positive changes I made in my diet, I may have stopped losing weight, but I'm also not gaining any. Like a bunch of people have said, the key to permanently losing weight (or not gaining anymore) is to make slow, incremental changes to your diet and exercise regimen, and then make the changes permanent. Once my neck heals, I'll go back to working out.

- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2TIP 1: EAT LESS.
What's wrong with people that they want to lose weight but not change their lifestyle? It's very simple... the less food that goes into your body means less weight you put on. Just change your diet and put down that liter of soda and side of fries. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A Tip: eat as many vegetables/fruit as you want, and drink tons of water. This speeds up your metabolism.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you know how long it will take to actually lose weight that way? Combined smaller portions and excercise is a must.
- sparkysko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I lost 90 pounds, kept it off for 3 years and eventually put it back on (damn you fast food!). Here's how I did it:
1) First thing in the morning, after you take a leak, weigh yourself in your boxers. Yes you will weigh more or less every day, but the important thing is to notice trends.
2) Count calories. I restricted myself to 1800-2000 calories a day. This is easy. 600 calories PER meal, and an additional 200 for a snack or a soda. The 600 calories per meal was the important one. This way you can look at what you're doing, and do tradeoffs. Would you rather eat that can of raviolli (600 calories), or have 2 or 3 sandwhiches (100 calories for bread, 50-100 for meat, 0 for mustard, 20 for low fat mayonaise). Do you really want to spend 100 calories on that slice of cheese? It's all about tradeoffs and knowing what you're eating.
I stayed away from fast food and restaurants like the plague, mostly because I had no idea how many calories I was consuming. Thanksgiving was eventually my demise, eating as much as I wanted, i stopped counting calories after this, and put my weight back on. It's best to eat low calorie items that make you full, than high calorie items that are small, and don't.
I didn't do any excersize, and drank LOTS of water. When I was really hungry between meals, I made a FULL plate of salad with light ranch dressing, crackers crumbled on top, and some grated cheese. (parmasean). Very tasty. - AZNL473ncy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about Dorkercise?
And actually to be honest I'm actually "heavy" (I'm asian, so I technically shouldn't have that big of a build) I actually excerise and I'm fairly muscular, so that's probably why. I go out hiking every week to build up those leg muscles. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Eat protein... powder if possible (low fat) go to the gym... take flaxseed oil (omega 3, 6 and 9)... Working out is the only way you can put on good weight. Try doing pushups everyday twice a day.
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and I forgot. Measure yourself also. If your doing any weight training (which I think is important to long term weight loss) then you may not see a lot of weight drop. Instead fat will be replaced with muscle and you won't see much of a difference in weight but your stomach, arms, legs / thighs, waist will be smaller.
I'm sure that anyone here wouldn't object to a body like Mr. Atlas but weighed in at 350lbs vs a body like louis Anderson and weighed in at 250lbs. - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"You're probably the same person who can eat 20 chocolate bars and never gain a pound, right?"
No, but I know that 20 choclate bars means about another 10 hours a week of high impact working out for me if I don't want it to affect me. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@coolguy2k:
I'm not sure why your being dugg down. Weighing yourself every day is a waste. I put it on par with checking a plant every hour to see if it has grown bigger. Once a week gives you a better idea of how your doing.
Also since healthy weight loss is somewhere around 3-5 pounds a week when you divide that by the 7 days your weighing yourself you won't see much change at all on a day to day basis.
/lost 80 lbs so far this year and counting
//weigh in is tomorrow morning as it is every Friday morning
