10% of all people were not fathered by who they believe their father to be. 10% of our mothers were cheating or with multiple partners when they conceived us. That’s staggering. This secret is usually kept from everyone involved to include the child, husband, and actual father. Think about that for a second.
Another interesting point was that a woman’s monthly cycle will actually adjust her sex drive around an affair with a lover. While in an affair a woman's sexual desires grow exponentially while she anticipates a rendezvous with her lover. Her horniess climaxes while she is at her most fertile. A woman's body will actually be more receptive to the sperm of her lover then it is to that of her husband or significant other as her chances of orgasm grow along with her desire. An female orgasm during sex increases the chances of gestation. Her body will slow its sexual desire towards her husband and the chance of orgasm with him diminishes. All this happens without her evening knowing it. Her body, at an instinctual level, wants to produce young with her lover more then her husband or significant other because her lover usually will have the ‘better’ genes or traits associated with providing for or nurturing a family. The lover is either hotter or would be a better mate for producing young then her current husband or significant other.
Another very interesting study on reproduction concluded that the majority of sperm are created and released as an army to do battle with another man's sperm in the womb to allow the stronger ‘breeding sperm’ the best chance of making it to the egg. The male body has actually evolved in such a way as to fend against multiple donations of sperm by multiple male partners inside the woman’s body. This can be looked at in a very interesting way. Woman, since, the beginning of our species, have proved to be so polygamous that evolution has provided males the ability to produce ‘battle sperm’ as a last means of passing on their genes. Sperm did not evolve into this form without need, and we would not still have this ability if the need was not still present.
Men are not more prone to cheating then women. That’s a myth. In fact some studies have found that women are actually more prone to cheat (but not by much). The bigger point is that people cheat; period. The more instinctual attraction present for the new potential mate the more likely a cheating relationship will occur. It’s as simple as that. If there’s enough instinctual attraction the chance of infidelity is multiplied. Provide the correct amount of attraction and your getting some naughty nookie while snookums is at work.
I’m sure there are tons of women that have never cheated just as there are tons of men that have never cheated, but it’s disingenuous to think that the need or want is not present in everyone. Personally I think men get a bad rap because of the stigma of cheating men, whereas for the same reason women tend to feel more justified (ie it's the man's fault for not fulfilling some need) in doing so. Surveys as of late say women cheat just as much as if not more then men, but are more prone to lying about it as well.

I don't know a whole lot about what humans would do outside of any sort of historical/societal context, but just because someone has multiple, simultaneous partners does not mean s/he is cheating. Cheating involves breaking the trust of the other party. So I guess in conclusion, I couldn't care less whether or not someone or group of people agrees to all have multiple partners and they're fine with it. It's cheating that's wrong.

Women are more likely to cheat, are unlikley to talk about it with friends/family even if caught. But will talk about it if their SO cheats.
Men are less likely to cheat, are more likley to talk about it if caught and are unlikely to talk about it if their SO cheats.
