- thefirelane, on 12/07/2007, -8/+61Top 10 AMERICAN cities.
- magic6435, on 12/07/2007, -10/+58there are cities outside of the us?
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 12/07/2007, -6/+51What about cities outside the US?
- kitchensj, on 12/07/2007, -0/+23Good ol' Portland.
- MrBelding, on 12/07/2007, -1/+23I've lived in 3 cities on this list. Sea, SF, and Chicago - I got to say that Chicago was by far the best. Easy access to everything, except its cold as *****.
- Derrekito, on 12/07/2007, -0/+20Portland is simply a nice walk, very pretty (lots of hobos though). I live in west Texas; everything is FAR apart, it is hot as hell, and public transportation is inadequate at best.
- Flamekebab, on 12/07/2007, -2/+22Would be nice if the list was called "Top 10 US Cities for Walkable Lifestyles". Yes, it really does annoy me. I'd like to read a list that covered the whole world!
- mypreciousss, on 12/07/2007, -1/+19As a person who lived in DC, I don't feel its the best city for walking! NY seems like a more walking-friendly place to me
- Ravatar, on 12/07/2007, -1/+18Odd to see NYC so low on that list, especially seeing as the "carbon footprint" per person as far as energy is concerned is far lower there than most of the other cities on that list.
- rhesuspieces00, on 12/07/2007, -1/+17No Los Angeles? I used to walk to my mailbox practically every day!
- MikeDawg, on 12/07/2007, -1/+16What?? No DETROIT?
- SmokeChiba, on 12/07/2007, -2/+15what about DETROIT?
You might even find a free bag of weed on the ground on the way to the bus stop! - ImYourRealDad, on 12/08/2007, -2/+14The only reason Boston is up there is because WE HAVE NO ***** PLACE TO PARK.
- inertic, on 12/07/2007, -3/+15I lived in Houston (thank god I got outta texas), Seattle, and now NYC (Manhattan). I would rate nyc above seattle and plus nyc has great public transportation. I would also call houston one of the worst cities to live in if you want to walk around. You cannot survive there without a car. And plus, it's in texas.
- mypreciousss, on 12/07/2007, -2/+12There might be some truth to that, DC used to have a really high number of murders until a few years ago.
- MikeonTV, on 12/07/2007, -7/+17Some might not be safe to walk in. I heard Washington is super violent.
- RAEP, on 12/08/2007, -1/+11Portland should be like..number 1. I mean Washington? WTF?
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -1/+11The 1/3 of the Washington where all the rich white people live is fairly safe.
- torontoliam, on 12/08/2007, -4/+14If you consider the whole world, the US will not be on the list. Don't you just love how lists like these always have qualifications?!
- bdbr, on 12/08/2007, -0/+8When my Korean mother-in-law visited the U.S. for the first time, we lived in Dallas, TX. After a few days, she asked if it was illegal to walk! She was serious! Nobody walked anywhere (and many places didn't even have sidewalks).
- adoggz, on 12/08/2007, -3/+11if you mean the national mall then yes, the rest however ... isn't as friendly.
- chuckDontSurf, on 12/08/2007, -0/+7Poke out your eyes and move to Portland
Kill your wife and move to Portland
Burn down your home and move to Portland
Come on everybody! We're movin' to Portland
/dead milkmen - anti_hax0r, on 12/08/2007, -0/+7Of course, the Internets is only in the US.
- caution, on 12/07/2007, -1/+8DC? Who did they interview for that survey? GWU students? Congressional staffers with an exclusive townhouse on the Hill? DC is sprawl -central and the work force is car-centric. When I tell the people at work I live close-in (about four miles) they turn their noses and say "How can you stand it?" Meanwhile these nuts sit in traffic for hours each way -- some living out near WV or way up in MD near PA. I will admit that some DC neighborhoods turned the corner and offer a decent, somewhat affordable place, but walkable? Only for tourists.
- PHiZ187, on 12/08/2007, -0/+7In Texas.
- huertanix, on 12/08/2007, -0/+7I've walked all over D.C., including the "bad" parts and have yet to be attacked.
- edwartica, on 12/08/2007, -0/+7No kidding! Its much easier to walk anywhere here then anywhere else I've been.
- AROZ, on 12/08/2007, -1/+7Why would anyone do a list like that? In my opinion it's only interesting because American and Canadian cities are comparatively young and saw enormous growth in the car obsessed 20th century. So, the cities that can transcend that kind of car focused planning and mindset are worthy of merit, as opposed to cities that were never pedestrian unfriendly.
- tekiek, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6Um ... 80% of New Yorkers don't have cars. Yet we are NO. 10!
- peestandingup, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6Why is he being dugg down?? Its true. These days, about the only major violence in DC is in the Southeast quadrant. Not to say there isn't crime, but thats in every major city.
Of course, you dont wanna be stupid & walk all over town at all hours of the night flashing your wallet. But again, we are talking about a major inner city here. Point is, dont still believe everything you heard about DC from 10-20 years ago. Its changed A LOT. - Arcnite, on 12/08/2007, -2/+8 1. Washington, D.C.
2. Boston
3. San Francisco
4. Denver
5. Portland
6. Seattle
7. Chicago
8. Miami
9. Pittsburgh
10. New York - CSOKI, on 12/08/2007, -1/+7This is ridiculous. NYC is absolutely far and above the easiest American city to walk in, bar none.
- chuckDontSurf, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6No. That's the best city for running. Fast.
- sundancekid503, on 12/08/2007, -2/+8Like the mythical land of Narnia?
- patbingsoup, on 12/08/2007, -1/+7come on the articles on this website suck, they could at least review each city, and give a reason why it is on that spot. buried.
- Burgoo, on 12/08/2007, -1/+7Of course add cities from anywhere outside of the US and not one of those cities would be there. Vancouver ftw.
- morningmatters, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5Subway + Zipcar = no need to own cars, in most of these cities anyway..
- jmpeagle, on 12/08/2007, -2/+7yeah, georgetown/northwest...try walking down 3 blocks on North Capitol Street away from the Capitol and past Union Station....see how safe you feel there around midnight and that is only 3 blocks from the Capitol building....let's not forget the Anacostia harbor area where during the recent rennovations that involved cleaning out the harbor, numerous bodies were found
- aywwts4, on 12/08/2007, -1/+6Yeah, just carry around this handy map to see where the least people have been killed by knife or gunshot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:DChomicides.jpg
Are you a little squeamish around blades? then go to southern DC, looks like they mostly shoot people there. - sportbikepilot, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5doesn't belong on the list... unless a fear of being run over by a truck is a requirement for a walking friendly city
- sportbikepilot, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5can't wait to move back to Seattle, I miss Green Lake
- inactive, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5I agree with you on the fact that U.S. is horrible for "walkable cities" but Seattle is actually almost impossible to travel by car, and even though it's not widely used, the bus system is actually really nice and has huge free travel zones. Plus I've never not been able to get somewhere by walking, there are sidewalks everywhere.
- Bukowsky, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5I live in Houston (and I love it) BUT it's not a city that you can walk around in
- awfulgrace, on 12/07/2007, -1/+6This list is crap...
I get what he says about taking the metro area as a whole, but come on. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey City/Hoboken, and parts of Bronx and Queens are totally walkable where you an live/work/shop all within short distances and don't even need to use public transport. - ozid, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5everybody from the 313, put your mother ***** hands up and follow me.
/8 mile - jcaino, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4it's also a great city if you're a bicyclist too. i love this city. i've been to just about every major city in the US and frankly, I just love coming home.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -2/+6I love being able to walk everywhere. It's my favorite mode of transportation. I just wish it weren't so bad for the environment.
- batista86, on 12/07/2007, -3/+7I live in Miami and I must yeah its very walkable except for the fact that most of the city is a ghetto and not very safe.
- mypreciousss, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5damn blogspam! here's the real article:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2007/12/05/int ... - ozid, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5Pittsburgh is really good for that type of thing. And the city actually smells okay thanks to the tons and tons of bagel bakeries.
at least it did when I lived there. -
