- fluidfoundation, on 11/20/2007, -1/+42I think any brainpower gained by conversation is subsequently lost when someone in the conversation talks about what happened on "Cavemen" the night before.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+22does talking with cyber-people count?
- tehpwnerofn00bs, on 11/20/2007, -0/+16I was thinking that too. I mean, I could see someone getting smarter talking about math or science or perhaps religion, but talking about Lost or Grey's Anatomy, or desperate housewives probably makes you dumber.
- buildbyflying, on 11/20/2007, -1/+17the title is misleading. For most people, 10 mins a day doesn't constitute a gift for gab as much as social quarantine. The article would be better served with a title like, "Zenophobes think better with conversation injections".
- Unrefined, on 11/20/2007, -1/+16As much as Cyber-sex does.
- JackondaRocks, on 11/20/2007, -0/+15I guess these researchers have never been on Xbox Live.
- evilregis, on 11/20/2007, -1/+15You probably could have chosen a better analogy there...
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -11/+23The thing I hate the most about religion is there is no debate, you are 'not allowed to talk about it'. Yeah, isn't that what a child molester tells his victims too?
- tehpwnerofn00bs, on 11/20/2007, -1/+13But there are many others who will just blindly disagree with you.
- Ghoztt, on 11/20/2007, -1/+11Unless they are Counterstrike players...
- chewbacca77, on 11/20/2007, -8/+18I've seen many religious people that are willing to discuss it objectively..
- hydrodev, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9commenting on digg .....DOES NOT!
- fluidfoundation, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9You obviously are a "Cavemen" fan.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9Does the voice in my head count as others?
- yutt, on 11/20/2007, -1/+8I've seen younger atheists who are just as ignorant, intolerant, and dogmatic as any fundamentalist Christian.
I say that being an atheist/agnostic myself. - HPCELarry, on 11/20/2007, -2/+9True, but that can be said for virtually every topic.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+6"They found that the higher their level of social interaction, the better their cognitive functioning."
Correlation =/= causation
Cognitive functionning =/= intelligence. - BoneheadFarker, on 11/20/2007, -1/+7So have I...to a point. Sure, many will go on for hours discussing and debating all sorts of different things, but as soon as you cross one of their lines that's it. Mention how people took the story of Onan out of context and that there's nothing wrong with masturbation, and no more talk about that subject. "Masturbation is wrong, period, God said so, end of story. Now how about them Leafs?" That's the general experience I've had. As soon as you touch on something that suggests you know more then they do about their religion, and all debate stops.
- fluidfoundation, on 11/20/2007, -2/+8Well, I suppose you could talk about House ;)
- xerexes1, on 11/20/2007, -2/+6Post an interesting comment.
- Krakn3Dfx, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4I'm sure this also depends on what you're talking about.
Things that don't make you smarter when talking to others: 1.) Talking about how great Bush is. 2.) Talking about Nascar, 3.) Talking about old episodes of Columbo or Matlock, 4.) 360 vs. PS3 vs. Wii discussion, 5.) Lindsey/Brittany/OJ discussions. - insertAliasHere, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Complaining about it isn't a good start...
- dotlizard, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Coming soon: scientists announce they've been releasing painfully obvious "study" findings just to piss us all off, then study our reactions.
- RaiderWolf, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3You took the words right out of my mouth.
- panteradactyl, on 11/20/2007, -5/+8Then my mother should be the smartest being on the earth. Shes been a hairdresser for 23 years, would that be the equivalent of getting her doctorateX3?
- CaptainHarlock, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3People that talk a lot are dumber than *****.
The quiet ones are intelligent. - crackedlogic, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3I already know about 6 contradictions to that thesis.
- ShaneS429, on 11/20/2007, -2/+5Currently in my sociology class we are talking about religion for a month. Everyone is open about their religion. Seems to depend on how comfortable you are with the people around you to talk about religion.
- NoSpaceForRent, on 11/20/2007, -1/+4That would mean Rush Limbaugh should be a genius by now. Somehow, I think these findings are little flawed.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2one upped me, did ya?
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Thats funny I know some people who can talk your ear off and are dumb as bricks
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2If most around you are religious, then I guess you would feel pretty "comfortable" about the discussion. It's called a "Circle Jerk"
- walterberk, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2well put. the author took a big jump that I'd be willing to bet the researchers did not explicitly state.
- slashpslayer, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Whatever this is, I know one of you will be using this as a pick up line. Probably me.
- EagleRock, on 11/20/2007, -1/+3If this is true, then why were the girls that wouldn't shut up in college classes so stupid?
- skyscape, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2You dont need research for this, maybe some do, but it is logical enough that if you don't talk to people you are toast in general
- demonsnake69, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1Buried as inaccurate: Talking to people on Digg could turn you into a moron.
- nelziq, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Zenophobes. That is neither spelled correctly, nor does it mean what you think it means.
- lukeev, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Breaking News: Research claims regular exercising makes you healthier. Go figure!
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1I.... Talk.... Now?
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -1/+2Where? In Switzerland?
You can't debate with a fundametalist, because they are not their to learn anything, only to PROVE something.
In my experience, they're either intellectually dishonest or simply not smart enough to carry on an honest and intellegent debate.
It seems they have NO interest whatsoever in scientific debate. It seems all they care about is re-affirming their superstitious beliefs of disturbing stories of hell and damnation and devils and eternal suffering and ramming them down the throats of unsuspecting children.
I'd be happy to be proven wrong about this. But so far I haven't been.

http://exchristian.net/ - Envark, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1Talking WITH someone is different from talking AT someone.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1From the world of education:
Wikipedia is crap. - chewbacca77, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure I follow you.. The end of the story of Onan was that God killed him because of what he did.
- mexretroshore, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1True because the dumbest people talk the most (in order to gain intelligence).
- insanebrain, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1No ***** sherlock. .. without input your brain stops working .. so yeah . . talking makes you smarter (although americans are able to ignore this fact).
- cwcentral, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1Of course, a statement like that says words mean everything.
Hmm....
"Talking With Others May Make You Smarter"
--"But not necessarily more intelligent". Smart != Intelligent, Smart ~ Clever. -
