- jollyholly, on 11/08/2007, -3/+83Wow. I never thought I'd see that on Fox News..
- FriskDown, on 11/08/2007, -6/+43They need something to distract the viewers from Ron Paul's success.
- LordSkywalker, on 11/08/2007, -1/+33"It looks like if you smoke marijuana and not tobacco, it’s better for you.”
How'd they let an article with lines like that on the FoxNews site? - Four20, on 11/08/2007, -1/+23I helped me too
- Boshow, on 11/08/2007, -4/+23How could you smoke with your head so far up your ass?
- archimago42, on 11/08/2007, -0/+18If you read the article you'd see they compared not only kids who don't smoke at all but kids who smoke both tobacco and marijuana to people who only smoke pot. I'm sick of morons commenting who can't even read a 4 paragraph article.
- alciadanet, on 11/08/2007, -1/+17Anything that helps you not getting affected by public education improves your life.
- catalysis, on 11/08/2007, -0/+14Researchers conduct a survey and then analyze the data. That's called a study. I smoke pot too. How does it feel to be dumber than a pot smoker?
- BobOrleans, on 11/08/2007, -2/+16I'm sure the editor has been canned.
- wishninja, on 11/08/2007, -6/+18I helped me, would have never been able to tread thru all of the stress and all of the bull crap classes without it. Prohibition keeps me further from my family then I would like. If it was like beer then I could just go out back and smoke but because its not legal I know my mom would freak out.
Still couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this on fox. Maybe the times are changing? - MattB123, on 11/08/2007, -1/+10Maybe in a more liberal, accepting society where the pot smokers aren't generally considered criminals, they will see themselves less as criminals and therefore not behave like criminals?
I think we have the converse effect here. (cue Motorhead's Breakin' the law)
Oh, and drug testing in high school sports in the USA would probably skew the participate in sports part too. We are creating the stoner stereotype by forcing those kids out of sports and alienating them. - Buddhaismybuddy, on 11/08/2007, -0/+9that was the first comment in a long time that made me laugh!
Thanks. - archimago42, on 11/08/2007, -2/+11It seems like this is a classic example of certain people falling into certain categories.
What I mean is people who choose to smoke marijuana but not tobacco obviously realize how bad tobacco can be for you and that it is highly addictive. Marijuana is not addictive and does not have severe health benefits. These people are clearly already thinking and weighing their options based on the evidence they have. Common sense seems to say they would do better in school and such.
People who do not smoke anything includes a lot of people who just plain don't do anything at all. (IF you notice this group was the largest surveyed.) Some people in this group may have started with poor social skills and thus those people drag the others in their groups down. We all knew people who had no friends and did nothing at all in high school and these people would probably never even be around marijuana or tobacco because they aren't really ever fitting in with anyone. It is a bit unfair for their surveys to end up with normal kids who just chose to abstain.
Then as I remember in high school the kids who smoked tobacco and pot (with all the information against smoking cigarettes) were often just striving extra hard to be 'different' or 'cool'. Doesn't surprise me that this might damage their numbers a little bit in regards to school and the like.
Just some observations, I'd be interested to hear if anyone thought the same thing. - Mokshaguy390, on 11/07/2007, -1/+10I pretty sure that they put it on FOX News because their readers would read it and see: "Look at these evil liberals saying that children should smoke marijuana. It's great to live in America and not that backwards nation."
Whereas we read it and say: "See, it takes a real liberal nation to post something like this. It sucks that America's not like them." - detales, on 11/08/2007, -1/+9To everybody who seems surprised that this is being reported by Fox, a notoriously Republican-oriented, conservative news station - you shouldn't be. Despite the stereotype of pot-smoking liberal hippies, it's actually the Democratic party that pushers for more restrictions against pot and other substances because the Democratic party believes in more government control than the Republican party.
This is even true with the crusading against videogame violence (which Hillary Clinton is a big part of), and FCC restrictions.
And for all Democrats who didn't know this, don't shoot the messenger - I'm just trying to do my part in fighting the battle against disillusionment that is so prominent on both sides of the political spectrum.
Besides, I identify as a Democrat mostly too. - m0nk, on 11/08/2007, -2/+10Awesome! All those years I something something something....oh, I forget. What were we talking about?
- Phrag, on 11/08/2007, -0/+8Why do people who categorize groups of people as stupid, retarded, idiots, etc. seem to be the most likely to make stupid comments while doing so? If you took even one second to look at the article, you could see that the headline is taken, word for word, from the foxnews page.
- giveer, on 11/08/2007, -1/+8"Quit taking my rules out of f*cking context."
~God. - giveer, on 11/08/2007, -4/+11As much as I follow you, I hate to break the memories, but those "really deep philosophical conversations" you were having? Probably weren't.
- bubbles19518, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7Someones getting lit up... er fired.
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/08/2007, -2/+8Probably the results of tests. Like maybe an Intelligence Quotient test...
- ats314, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6if you pay close attention to the article, most of the commentary is from a U.S. doctor who is strongly against marijuana use by teens. Fox knew this news would be popular and they are trying to sway opinion.
"A U.S. substance abuse expert disagreed with the study and said U.S. teens should not be encouraged to use marijuana, particularly since teenagers’ brains are still developing at this time."
“Maybe (there’s) a cultural bias there that says it’s ok to use marijuana once or twice a month,” he continued “But from what I know, I’ve never heard that anyone thought it was beneficial. Most experts here would say that it’s not a good idea to use cannabis before the age of 15, because it interferes with school and the development of brain.”
-He said the study should be viewed in terms of culture. “In France, people drink wine with food, but they don’t get drunk,” he said. “Kids also start doing this when they are young, and that’s different from here. I don’t think anyone would say that the active ingredient in marijuana is doing anything good in the brain, compared to abstaining or smoking tobacco, so there must be cultural reason for this happening.”
Keyword is cultural reason. They are trying to convince people the study is biased because the Swiss are have a liberal attitude towards marijuana use. - krets, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6"We apologise again for the fault in the articles. Those responsible for canning the people who have just been canned have been canned."
- hydrodev, on 11/08/2007, -1/+7probably because your a waste to begin with. It usually only amplifies the person you are
- archimago42, on 11/08/2007, -1/+7Wasn't all that cool in my HS. It was much cooler to drink alcohol. I think most of America falls more in that direction.
- arjie, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6College? Why wait? It's not called High School without reason.
Sorry but that 'lightened'/'lit'/whatever pun, it was too much and called for retribution. Dugg up nevertheless! - capiCrimm, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6LSD also increases spiritual beliefs, ironic isn't it?
- bemenaker, on 11/08/2007, -1/+7I'm gonna agree with Archmago on this one. Smoking weed wasn't the cool thing to do in HS, drinking was, but potheads were still outcasts. Now, I don't think people smoke becuase it's the cool thing to do, I think they try it out of sheer curiosity.
- Phrag, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6Did you uhhhmmmm, RFTA?! Obviously not.
- JPOOPOO, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5How did you come to the conclusion everyone who smokes pot does so on a daily basis? Does everyone who drinks alcohol do so on a daily basis? No. But hey, lets continue believing whatever it is the box in the living room spews out each night.
- NapalmNewt, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5It's a survey, not a study.
- scooterbaga, on 11/08/2007, -15/+20Wait... so you mean they all don't assume they can fly, and jump out of windows?
- Protoss, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6I thought it was LSD that supposedly did that?
- Phrag, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5This study (oops I mean survey) is important for one reason. It goes against all the studies (surveys) that the US did to 'prove' that pot causes things like being lazy, violent, stupid, drug addicts, etc. Does this study prove that pot causes people to be better? No. Did the surveys that the US did prove that pot causes people to be the things I mentioned previously? No. Are these surveys important to counter other surveys that are put forth as proof of something that is not really proven? Yes.
- Lothar121, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5The survey doesn't prove that marijuana makes you a better teen overall (since this is just a correlation). What it DOES indicate is marijuana isn't the end of the world for every teen or adult that tries it.
- FriskDown, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5You are completely right, it all boils down to who gets the check. Unfortunatly, the folks responsible for choosing Fox's programming, are paid very well by the wrong people. Let's not forget to mention who owns the MSM.
- arjie, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6Nah. that's just Kryptonite withdrawal symptoms.
- minorthreat, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4My question is, who is this U.S. doctor and what does he have to do with the swiss study? Nothing. They are just trying to smear an experiment with a some doctor that buys into the B.S. that fox is not an entertainment network. Fox isn't news, it's entertainment for those who have a delusion of reality.
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4Me too, until I started smoking in college and finally lightened the ***** up...
- detales, on 11/08/2007, -3/+7I smoke pot and I'm proud to say that I'm wickedly successful. The fact that marijuana is illegal and alcohol is not has done a lot towards shaping my belief that the government isn't always right, and it doesn't always work in the best interest of the people.
I learnt that in High School, of course, when I tried pot. - Phrag, on 11/08/2007, -2/+6I wouldn't read that far into it. While I don't like Fox news, I'm not about to believe that everything the publish is part of some grand, right-winged conspiracy. I suspect the published it because marijuana is a hot topic at the moment. If they didn't publish it someone else would and then that site would get the ad revenue from all the visitors instead of Fox. More content usually means more visitors which means more money from advertisers and I think that cash is what is most important to Rupert.
- 89992, on 11/08/2007, -2/+6"Intelligence is best measured by results"
Measured by results of what? What you define it to be? - Mockylock, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4Why? Because they stay home on the couch and don't get into trouble. By the time they snap out of it and eat all the food in the house, they feel guilty enough to do their homework.
- BiotMessiah, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4You forget that Swedish is Fox code for "pinko commie devil".
- Thorox, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4Where I went to school, we did both... at lunch.
- Lothar121, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4detales, that simply isn't true. Take a look at the presidentail candidates that are pandering to the Republican and Democratic cores. Only 2 Republicans support medical marijuana. All Democratic candidates support it. 3 Democratic candidates support decriminalization or legalization. Only Ron Paul supports legalization in the Republican party.
There you have it. - maexus, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4Yes, most do start because of peer pressure. Which is a shame. I couldn't care less if my friends smoked it or not. You should smoke weed because you choose to. Thats it.
- banq59, on 11/08/2007, -1/+5This is 100% true. If you are a lazy sack of *****, you are going to be lazier when you smoke. If you are very creative/musical you will be more so with pot.
- Maxamegalon2000, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3Two things.
1) "Swiss Study Finds Marijuana Use Alone May Benefit Some Teens, U.S. Doctor Disagrees": Why does the headline bother to mention that one doctor disagrees? I bet I can find at least one doctor to disagree with any given study; the only reason to mention it in a headline like that is to attempt to discredit the study.
2) Let's not get our causes and effects mixed up. If marijuana users are more sociable, it could easily be for the reason that they're more likely to be male: certain factors increase likelihood of use, not the other way around. -
