- betona, on 10/29/2009, -20/+672I heard it should be renamed as "media flu"
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/29/2009, -17/+525Shut. Down. EVERYTHING.
- peestandingup, on 10/29/2009, -13/+438Where the ***** is my Leprosy vaccine!!
- MatthewDuke, on 10/29/2009, -11/+426This infographic sucks. Why wouldn't you put the bars on the Y axis so the words are readable without craning your neck 90 degrees? I could make a better "infographic" in Excel in about 3 minutes.
- Tiitar, on 10/29/2009, -11/+397I had swine flu a few weeks back.
It was kinda like a bad cold that kept me confined to either bed or my computer for a few days.
So basically it didn't change my life for those few days at all. - Schmidtopolis, on 10/29/2009, -53/+363Why hype this disease? I'm not one for conspiracies, but is this all just to push drugs?.. er, vaccines.
- coachmcguirk, on 10/29/2009, -28/+290Wow..
This really puts things in perspective..
This 'swine flu' must be stopped before it gets 10,000x's worse!!
The time to panic is now, people! - DeadFox1, on 10/29/2009, -8/+242Nice perspective.
Here's a better size: http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelpaukner/405284 ... - iwashere2, on 10/29/2009, -7/+189There's something wrong with our media.
- jayjayjoni, on 10/29/2009, -8/+182Madagascar has not yet closed its ports.
- nofrickenway, on 10/29/2009, -9/+183You know...
If we banned hearts, lungs, and gravity we could save almost 20 million people! - combatchuck, on 10/29/2009, -2/+139Don't fall apart, they're working on it.
- Specializedone, on 10/29/2009, -23/+146Wow, seriously? I expected more rationality from this group ... Flu season (In the USA) starts in october and goes until march. We've already surpassed the 50% mark of normal exposure in the first month. Very little of the reported cases are seasonal flu. Children and young teens are especially effected by the swine flu, causing a higher mortality than normal flu. Is it "lock yourself and loved ones in the house for a few months" bad? No, not even close. But it is something to keep in mind and be wary of.
- lolwatermelon, on 10/29/2009, -3/+103"She actually said i may be one of the millions that have died from it."
Your boss accused you of being a zombie? - CrimsonFlash, on 10/29/2009, -13/+94We are no longer allowed to say the phrase "when pigs fly."
Because swine flu. - powerphail, on 10/29/2009, -6/+84I still think we should all RUN AROUND IN CIRCLES AND PANIC just to be on the safe side.
- byyou8, on 10/29/2009, -4/+81Do you live in Madagascar?
- FreckleEars, on 10/29/2009, -20/+96It was never an issue to someone who looked at the real statistics and found out that it kills less per capita then the regular old fashioned influenzea strains.
This whole thing has been a media scare more than anything, and a reason for some company to cash in on hundreds of millions of vaccinations via contract etc. Canada has more vaccinations than its population... I don't know why. I refuse to take a vaccination to something that MOST people can get rid of with some normal old medicine and sleep.
***** 'H1N1' - Mujokan, on 10/29/2009, -5/+78We are supposed to be entering the winter flu season, but the levels of illness and death are at levels which are normally not found until the peak.
Influenza has the potential to quickly become a pandemic, which is not true for other viruses on that chart like HIV.
This is not to say we are all doomed. It just means we have to look out for a bad flu season, and the possibility of a pandemic.
No-one wants people to panic. Just get the vaccine if you are at risk, practice good sanitary measures like washing your hands often, and go to the doctor if you get bad flu.
There isn't even half as much hype around this as there was about bird flu, even though it's much more communicable. People saying there is nothing whatsoever to worry about are wrong, but there is no need to worry too much either. Just be aware of what is happening.
By the way, the CDC says more than 1000 people have died in the US of complications from swine flu and about 20000 have been hospitalized. - carabou, on 10/29/2009, -64/+134Obama news to us This Week: "President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency and empowered his health secretary to suspend federal requirements and speed treatment for thousands of infected people".
And this guy wants creditability?
dont believe the hype people. This Flu has the potential to be a serious thing...but it just has not turned out to be that at all. Yet they are pumping this down our throughout day in and out.
My boss yesterday scolded me for saying im not going to get the H1N1 shot. She actually said i may be one of the millions that have died from it.
My boss is a very smart and successful women, but she lives at times on what the media tells her.

- giz0r, on 10/29/2009, -9/+61My father is a part of the Cancer statistic. Rest in peace dad.
- TheFoshizzler, on 10/29/2009, -4/+55*****! Leprosy's making a comeback!
- johndk, on 10/29/2009, -3/+51And our government.
- chanter2, on 10/29/2009, -5/+53The fear is that it will mutate to a similar flu strain that killed 12,000 people in a week in Philadelphia during the 60's.
Take an immunology class, i can assure you the fear is warranted. - Turious, on 10/29/2009, -3/+50http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=sw ...
- Jaiotu, on 10/29/2009, -6/+52The same people shaming me for not being overly concerned about H1N1 are the same people who shamed me for making no preparations for Y2K. Fear mongering is a lucrative business, especially for the media which needs something to keep in the headlines to build their viewership.

- paukee, on 10/29/2009, -2/+45it's because - if you look at my whole portfolio on flickr, this image is part of an art project and every single image is portrait. ;) sorry about your neck.
the creator himself. - Tiitar, on 10/29/2009, -1/+43Yes I saw a doctor because I needed to to account for time off work, yes it was swine flu, and for the record, my symptoms were fairly consistent with everyone else's as it was making its way around my campus at the time. I'm sorry I wasn't as sick as you wanted me to be.
- DarthDubbya, on 10/29/2009, -1/+40Pandemic II
- HereComeTheBugs, on 10/29/2009, -8/+46OMG OMG OMG We're all going to die!!!!
- askantik, on 10/29/2009, -8/+44"Children and young teens are especially effected by the swine flu, causing a higher mortality than normal flu."
Aren't the old, infirm, and very young always the ones most susceptible to the "regular" influenza virus? - ozroy, on 10/29/2009, -2/+37Hang on a second. Why are they looking back over the last 300 days?
It was first reported in March, which is hardly 300 days ago. In fact this doesn't even say what dates these statistics cover. Does it include this month? I'm sure I could come up with a pretty graph showing the number of deaths from swine fly over the last 10 years, have the same number of swine flu deaths, and then draw the same conclusion "Oh my god! Look how insignificant it is compared to the 50,000 leprosy deaths."
Maybe it really isn't that serious. But this graph certainly doesn't prove that.
Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics.
Just remember, we haven't even entered flu season yet. - WasabiBomb, on 10/29/2009, -6/+41I've had the flu once or twice in my life. That last time, about five years ago, I thought I was gonna die (and I was afraid I wouldn't). I was *miserable* for ten days.
You had a cold. You didn't have the flu. - kitsua, on 10/29/2009, -1/+32What did the leper say to the prostitute?
"Keep the tip" - TheSuperunknown, on 10/29/2009, -0/+31Where's my traffic accident vaccine??
- nofx1510, on 10/29/2009, -1/+32If less and less people have the swine flu there is a less of a chance of a major mutation to develop and start ass ***** humanity. Its probably a good idea that everyone gets vaccinated for it. I would usually trust the CDC over people ranting on the internet.
- warcin, on 10/29/2009, -2/+33-bought to you by all major media
fixed it for you. There is a lot you can blame on Fox News but this one is hardly specifically them - motivatedguy, on 10/29/2009, -2/+32On a long enough time line the survival rate for everyone drops to zero - Jack
- MatthewDuke, on 10/29/2009, -5/+35I give you a C-
- TomFrost, on 10/29/2009, -10/+40Oh, this is actually about the H1N1 virus? It makes SO much more sense now! Thanks for clearing up that confusion :) I just couldn't understand it before.
- brianhatch, on 10/29/2009, -2/+31The problem with this flu is it's much more communicable than the regular flu, though not necessarily deadly. The real risk with this flu is 1) that being 4x more communicable than the regular flu and with a similar mortality rate to regular flu should result in 4x more dead people eventually and 2) that the volume of flu cases could overwhelm an already strained medical system. I don't think that justifies ALL of the hype, but it really is a serious problem and not one to be taken lightly.
- DeadFox1, on 10/29/2009, -1/+29No shenanigans. I just couldn't read the original.
- arcooke, on 10/29/2009, -1/+29Same here :\
- efrancesco, on 10/29/2009, -12/+39Pal, its hard to make a buck in this economy for pharmaceutical companies but hey fear sells regardless.
- Legendcad, on 10/29/2009, -1/+28everytime i play that game i pretend thats where my secret base/lab is. that means im actually a winner
- dagr8tim, on 10/29/2009, -7/+33No offense, but what most people call "the flu" is not what is the medical definition of "The Flu". With what is medically considered the "The Flu", you are usually sick for 2 weeks.
Anyways, I still agree that Swine Flu, and the regular influenza are over hyped. - lolwatermelon, on 10/29/2009, -2/+27SARS and Bird Flu already have that name.
