- absentmindedjwc, on 11/27/2008, -1/+10now to learn how keep that gene turned on... be able to learn things at an advanced age as quickly as a young child (mastering another language in a very short time, etc)
- sfacets, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6Thanks for that generalization... you dumb American ;)
- svensko, on 11/28/2008, -0/+5Hooray, pipedreams on Digg.
I think you mean now to learn how to convince the public that keeping this gene turned on is ethical. I think you also mean now to learn how this gene interacts with other genes in the genome to prevent lethal dosages of other genes. Good luck with that! - inactive, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3the rest of the cash is for foil hats
- Trollbane, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3Yeah, blatantly referring to an entire country as racist is kind of prejudice yourself, isn't it?
I'm sure I could find some article about Guantanamo Bay or Intelligent Design online and use it to accuse all Americans of supporting that. - samimy, on 11/27/2008, -1/+3I heard University of Queensland had started this research 10 years ago, with association of Oxford University secured $300,000 funds to this research, Good luck any way.
- cobracommander, on 11/28/2008, -1/+3Not the first time that University of Queensland has been making a scientific breakthrough. Specifically Ian Frazer who developed the vaccine for the four most common HPV strains (is now working on a therapeutic vaccine/treatment for Genital Warts related to HPV) along with a skin cancer vaccine now in the pipes:

Australia ftw, maybe? - MacroDaemon, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Or alternatively, to keep forming more and more brains, which is what this'd probably do.
- sfacets, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2With that kind of money getting pumped in, wouldn't you want the research to drag on as long as possible? They probably found the answer in the first month.
- sfacets, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2No, he's both. Like Mussolini.
- DonJuanAussi, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Oh nos! Republicans will become an endangered species if they did that!
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -1/+2OK, racist.
- dborgir, on 11/28/2008, -1/+2We aren't racist, we insult everyone, hence why we call our mates, *****.
- TBombadil, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1i had/have a major deficiency of that *****, damn
- cyberdash, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1What? Where can I get one.
- badenglishihave, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1I know a bunch of people who could have benefited from this gene.
- tallguyg, on 11/28/2008, -1/+2They want to deliver vast amounts of information over your brain. And again, the brain is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.
- mhmandthen, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1"Till at last the child's mind is these suggestions, and the sum of the suggestions is the child's mind. And not the child's mind only. The adult's mind too-all his life long. The mind that judges and desire and decides-made up of these suggestions. But all these suggestions are our suggestions... Suggestions from the State."
- Garrettsimonsen, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Cool.
- hamandcheeseUK, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1***** it, I don't care about ethical *****. Where do I sign for underground testing on this?
- TBombadil, on 11/28/2008, -2/+3he's not dumb, he's an evil fascist prick
- Rudegar, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1i'm gonna get me some of that! :P
- theenmachine, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Genes active during embryonic development are not equivalent to genes active during adulthood. Keeping genes active when they normally aren't (and vice versa) is usually devastating to an embryo. For example, overexpression of a ventralization gene will keep that neural tube's dorsal end from closing up properly, resulting in anencephaly and little chance of viability.
- theenmachine, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Sometimes if they know what can trigger the activation/deactivation of the gene (ie introduced environmental compounds like nicotine during pregnancy or something) they can help prevent developmental defects or miscarriage caused by the gene's induced malfunction. If we could add a compound to the huge list of chemicals already known to cause embryos problems, it'd be worth it. There are birth defects and stillbirths whose causes are still unknown, though more than likely most are results of just another genetic anomaly or developmental mishap. Estimated 2/3 of conceptions are miscarried because the embryos just aren't doing their thing the right way. Neurulation (this neural tube stage) is a huge step that knocks a good lot of them out of the race.
But I agree with you. If an embryo can't make it through its pre-programmed stages of early development without help, what makes us think it could possibly be a good idea to force it along its defective path and into a contrived gene pool. - TheRealDeuce, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Gattaca?
- replaysMike, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1let me know when they isolate the gene for big penis syndrome. I could get me some of that.
- LANopticx, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Some big penis?
- theenmachine, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Why is this in Lifestyle and not the Science section?
- frankdozier, on 08/10/2009, -0/+1At some point you gotta hope that these scientist can afford to let themselves be objective enough to want to search for an answer, and the sooner the better. Medical technology, especially in genetics has only recently begun to grow. With the help of some really cool discoveries and innovations, humanity is scratching the surface of the capability of DNA.
It would be good to be able to keep a job for a long time on the dime of some rich schmucks, but it is a whole other thing to change the world of medicine in a fundamental way. It's also probably pretty posh to possibly be immortalized by scientific history, too.
That's just me talking uncommon sense. - ptFoe, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1but Queensland is like the "Dirty South" of Australia.
- frankdozier, on 08/10/2009, -0/+1This is really cool stuff. The scientists that research this kind of thing are clearly doing it for the sake of helping those with disabilities. However, our species may find that the fundamental ideas brought forth from such research may very well be able to change the physiological makeup of the human race. I just hope the "mad scientists" can be kept powerless. Nobody reputable here wants to play God. But if there is research like this out there that may be able to offer us a deeper understanding of what the human brain is all about -- and, therefore, what the human MIND is all about -- then we should be willing to jump all over it, if only for the sake for the upcoming generations.
- christoast, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Who are these ***** scientists, i want names!
- breakaway, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Silence, convict
- PostStellar, on 11/28/2008, -0/+0So where are they going with this research? Eventually trying to control every birth that may be defective? Are we all going to be born perfect in the future? Hopefully not... a person born with "defects" can produce some of the most amazing things in this world. Art. Music. Scientific Theories. Einstein was technically born defective--his brain was abnormal.
Or maybe they're just doing this for knowledge? But, of course, knowledge always leads to some kind of change. . . I guess we'll see if it's a significant one or not soon enough. - benologist, on 11/28/2008, -1/+1Historically Australia has been a terribly racist country but it's not really fair to say it still is. There are plenty of racist people but that happens in every country where you get a number of different cultures mixing.
- indyfilmaker08, on 09/28/2009, -0/+0also found missing on Nadia Suleman. I hope her 14 kids got theirs from their dad.
