- Kronich, on 11/18/2008, -0/+34I want to know why you always get one that's just out of reach!?
- mongo22, on 11/18/2008, -0/+33Of course I just got an itch after reading this. :)
- cl2yp71c, on 11/18/2008, -0/+19Maybe it's a signal from our brain that it's time to scratch/rub off the dead skin.
Just a guess. - Shiftgood, on 11/18/2008, -0/+14man, lab mice really have a ***** life. I hope they get some kind of special treatment in the afterlife.
r.i.p little buddies, thanks for the work. - orangederange, on 11/18/2008, -1/+12I think the body is reacting to something... like to poison ivy. Or the skin is dry... or that part of the body needs some attention. I do know some itches feels sooooo good to scratch :P
- BeShirtHappy, on 11/18/2008, -0/+10It's one of life's cruel little jokes...
- Richandler, on 11/18/2008, -0/+10I'm sure it's a defense mechanism.
- benologist, on 11/18/2008, -1/+10If your itches are moving around they're probably crabs.
- Brododium, on 11/18/2008, -1/+10It isn't a pun.
- Brododium, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8Pun: •A pun (or paronomasia) is a phrase that deliberately exploits confusion between similar-sounding words for humorous or rhetorical effect
- Slyer, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8Who else was scratching before they read the title?
- StealthyMong, on 11/18/2008, -1/+8Because you touch yourself at night
- TheScogg, on 11/18/2008, -1/+7Gross, but probably often times true, and very likely the very reason we evolved the itch-scratch reaction from an evolutionary standpoint. Your body alerts you to an outside intruder/parasite/biting insect through the itch which instinctively signals you to kill by scratching. And it goes without saying why we use the tool most suitable for reaching in small precise areas to deliver the lethal chopping/scraping motion - our fingernails.
I am not a biologist, but it makes sense to me. - Phawkes, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5I always thought that it was an impulsive reaction to get rid of dead skin and little bugs that are biting you. :P
- gregdigg, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5He probably misuses the words "ironic" and "literally."
- AlienMushroom, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6Because we got nerves. It's the same way we feel pain. Scientists spend too much time scratching heads..... *Sigh*
- sleeknerve, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4calm down with the question marks buddy
- se7envii, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5*scratches head*
- Sikamikanico, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4Wow shut the ***** up. I read his comment as being a sort of sarcastic answer. It seems like every reaction we have in our body is a "defense mechanism" like coughing, sneezing, blisters, and calluses. Are you some expert and he insulted your work cus he just gave out a simple answer? god damn
I always thought we itched to scrape off old, dead skin. In the article it says we itch because of the brain, maybe the brain thinks it can get rid of those problems just by scraping it off or whatever. - Blandyman, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3He means like in the center of your back, which, although reachable if you stretch your arm a bit, isn't as simple as say, if you're belly or faced itched.
Maybe you should learn what he means, before you go off being passive aggressive and sounding like an idiot. - dirtpoorchris, on 11/18/2008, -1/+4I solved a spontaneous itch a minute after thinking about it. It is when the nerves of the skin of a certain area remain inactive so long the brain sends a routine test signal. And you scratch.
- DarkCloud515, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3I thought that we itched to get rid of skin cells that build up. Although that only explains why we itch all of a sudden for no reason.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3Probably some type of evolutionary misfiring analogous to pain, Like a mild form.
- Dinsdale77, on 11/18/2008, -6/+9Wow, a pun.
- wisammy, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2hinchb,
You are a ***** idiot. I HAVE LUPUS. I am one of very few men that get it as it is predominantly a Women disease.
Lupus is an incurable Auto-Immune disease and is a absolute horror to those who have it.
My life is a living hell sometimes. I fight every ***** day just to get out of bed and get going.
Do some reading. Go to the Lupus foundation of America.
You sir are a ***** idiot. Lupus is real, and very serious. - Rudegar, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2"one of humankind's most annoying problems"
a bit over the top imho - wisammy, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I look dumb? I think I look pretty good, I just checked in the mirror. Although I will admit not reading the article led me to believe that the article was about the common type of itching.
Yes there is psoriasis, shingles (which I have because I have Lupus) but there are actually creams for that.
So my bad, should have the read the article.
but looking dumb? nah I look good. I may have acted in a presumptive nature that led to only a single answer to a two part problem. So for that I don't really look like anything. Cause you can't see me.
I did act in a presumptive way.
By the way did you know that all Gala apple's are in some form or another the clone of the one "mother" apple. Fact of the day. - wisammy, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2We itch when our skin is irritated by a variety of different things from biological to inanimate. And anti-histamines such as benadryl stop itching very well. Because it is the release of histamine the causes a large majority of that itchy feeling..
done and done. no need to read the article. - Zaggynl, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3omnomzap
- JitMaster, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Maybe instead of being inactive, they are over-active, and need to be reset.
- IIECONII, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I have psoriasis. That's probably why.
Nothing like over-excited, super-thick dandruff to brighten your life! - Blandyman, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Stupid comment is ***** worthless.
- vertigo32, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1We itch to get rid of built up skin cells. It's a basic action in the reptilian part of our brain that came from evolving from animals that shed all of their skin annually into animals that constantly shed small amounts of skin.
- Rockkybox, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1I'm all for it, little bastards, they can have the blood they want just let me extract it with a needle and leave it in a bowl; but they don't cooperate
- palehorse864, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Umm, just a guess here that these brilliant scientists may have missed.
Maaybeee it's caused by thinking? - FrostbyteX, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Psychologists Scratch Heads over Why We Care about Why We Itch
- hinchb, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Go watch house then come back and apologize, I'll be waiting.
- newms32, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, what could be more worthless to study than a fundamental part of the nervous system that's poorly understood
- Perezzle12, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1buried for title
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
- fxu1989, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1***** them.
They bit my cables... little bastard got electrocuted. That bitch deserved it. - Rockkybox, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Nerd rage!
- o0joshua0o, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1In my experience, itching is caused by one of three things: a) an external irritant (insect, dust, etc.), b) an allergic reaction, or c) a skin condition (eczema, psoriasis, etc.)
- Zaggynl, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1:x
- Gee1004, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Why do we itch on the bottom of our feet when we drive?
- hinchb, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1You are dumb because no one ever has lupus.
- julesbond007, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Come on now...the first thing that made me think twice was this sentence: "itch can be devastating to patients and lead to extensive loss of quality of life." There is nothing to quantify. How many years less does a person live? Also notice how what this sentence says: "Unfortunately, the treatment of itch is often unsatisfactory." It doesn't say it's "debilitating" like there is no cure for it.
Do you know what a professor actually does beside teaching? They write grant proposals for anything that could bring money into their labs. As for thinking that Unilever is a massive corporation and they don't need grant money...think again. The NIH is right next to John Hopkins. - wipis, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Now my nose won't stop itching.
