- staxofmax, on 06/19/2008, -3/+53Judging from the content I've seen of digg, scientists have cured cancer at least 50 times already.
- jollyholly, on 06/19/2008, -2/+40The strategy makes perfect sense. Find cells that fight cancer, copy them, and then send them off to fight the cancer. Wow!
- drunkmonkey01, on 06/19/2008, -1/+33buried. this was on the homepage this morning, with a better title. and its still on the third page:
http://digg.com/health/Cloned_cells_cure_cancer_pa ...
"found the cure for skin cancer" is clearly not what the article states. they found something that worked on 1 person and MIGHT work for everyone, but by no means is that a cure. *****/misleading title to the extreme
the actual article is very interesting tho, hope that cell cloning works out on a large scale - Brainmodder, on 06/19/2008, -0/+31CITATION NEEDED.
- Optimusb, on 06/19/2008, -0/+26is this the cancer cure of the month?
- Bukowsky, on 06/19/2008, -7/+22CURE is a strong word.... They better watch out, the FDA may come & shut them down!
- MarkCiccone, on 06/19/2008, -5/+20Wow...
- killerknives, on 06/19/2008, -1/+16you must be new here, this is probably the 3rd skin cancer cure in the past year. we've cured all kinds of cancer multiple times and even aids over here at digg
- hiddencatch, on 06/19/2008, -1/+12Yeah! Clone-brush it all out!
- nerdherder, on 06/19/2008, -0/+9We will do it prerecorded. To heck with it.
- Yookji, on 06/19/2008, -1/+10This guy had a very advanced stage of skin cancer, as in it had spread to his lymph system. Curing something like that is a breakthrough. And [Citation needed] for the eggplant.
- etoreo, on 06/19/2008, -0/+8This was advanced melanoma dude... it spread to his lungs and lymph nodes. I don't think this was an early stage patient.
- amabaie, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7"major side effects such as death". I don't want to nitpick or anything, but can death be technically a side effect of a cure for death?
- jazzviolin, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7This will work for people with only a specific type of skin cancer, and then only works some of the time. Title is misleading.
- mxdxo, on 06/19/2008, -1/+8but can they clone a Shakey's Pizza?
- FreeTalkLIve, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7Can I do this at home with a razor blade?
- orblivion, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7This has the notable exception, I believe, of being shown to completely cure the cancer on a real live human subject. Not an animal, not just some cells in a dish, and not just slowing the growth.
- bjs3171, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6in the article this is a duplicate of, it says just because it's worked on one person DOES NOT mean it's a cure. You know, the whole "people are different" thing...
- orblivion, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6Big Science keeping it out of the major publications, maaaaaaan.
- doremon313, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5i can just hear the cloned cell go "wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii kill them all" after they are release back to the person's body
- Ne007, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5All this just 10 years away from release to the public...just think....only 10 years to go...always.
- XxModestMousexX, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5You can, but other necessary tools include eyeliner, tight pants, and at least one My Chemical Romance album.
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -3/+8The next 50 years are going to be really ***** interesting...
now, clone me a cheeseburger. - marktastic, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5Damn near killed 'um!
- gametavern, on 06/19/2008, -1/+6Cure: Don't tan yourself to a leathery, wrinkly dark brown...
- 4LeggedtriPod, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Bumb = not a word.
- Stuart750, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Concerning stories like this, I'm disappointed that they tend to get far less diggs than political stories, lightly entertaining videos, or witty images. If this really is legitimate, then please digg this story. This is a medical breakthrough!
- skippyisforyou, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4lol?
- catcher6250, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4This seems slightly important.
- Devilboy666, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4That's because cancer is not just one disease. Even just skin cancer can mean many different diseases:
- Melanoma
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma
- Keratosis
etc. Thus you won't ever just find one generic 'Cure for Cancer' that treats everything. - inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Hey that's perfect! They have shown that getting sun reduces every single other form of cancer besides skin cancer! So all you gotta do is go roast in the sun as much as you can, and then when you get skin cancer, you just do some clone cell therapy, and you're cancer free!
Thanks science! - chesscat, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4JGNTDWI (Jesus got nothing to do with it)
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Cool!
- Acglaphotis, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3ebola too.
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3In other news, the cure won't be available to the general public for another 20-50 years.
- tnoy, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3Have you only had it once?
- nextekcarl, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3I read this a while back and they said it only worked for a particular kind of cancer with someone who had a particular type of immune system. While it may have larger uses, it also might just be something that only ever works on a small percentage of people. But every little bit helps, so we should give them congrats. We just need to keep it in perspective and keep the titles a bit more accurate.
- grodrigu, on 06/19/2008, -2/+5Did they also inject them with cash? Or does that only work for HIV?
- silentlaw, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3Another write-up of this, in the Guardian I think, mentioned that the guy had Stage 4 Melanoma. That's the "get your affairs in order" stage.
- nullcodes, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3Ok, so how come you know about it? And you're able to post it on digg.
Most drugs come from nature already (quinine or artemisine for malaria, chemotherapy drugs, most antibiotics), why would that particular one be suppressed?
How is it that they were able to identify that malaria could be cured with cinchona tree bark, and that willow bark can be a pain reliever .. and that certain bacteria can make antibiotics .. but nobody in the past was able to figure out that eggplant, a commonly eaten veggie, is able to cure cancer!
While I don't doubt that some substances in eggplant may have some anti cancer effects, only a fool would run around saying it cures cancer without a proper controlled study and more numbers to back it up (what stage were the cancers, how many people did it fail for etc. .. why not do a controlled study?). - TrunksTheMighty, on 06/19/2008, -2/+5I've seen 100 of these "Miracle Cure" Posts and none of em seem to get any media attention.
- airmann90, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3Well, this is on the front page of BBC Health, so I think it's getting some.
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle developed it! Go Seattle!
- Realnemesis, on 06/19/2008, -1/+4It's BBC; What more Citation do you need?! lol
- brycehebert, on 05/03/2009, -0/+3"What? Clone it yourself."
- jdepp, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3He's a lucky dude. - one of nine in the study though, so it didn't work for everyone. still, hopeful stuff.
- growler1, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3This is the most credible (looking) link I could find to RDRick's reference:
