- feoren, on 07/23/2008, -17/+128The study built on previous work that found eating a strict vegetarian diet makes you break out in vaginas.
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -3/+65How can that be true? There's like a billion Chinese.
- whirlingderv, on 07/23/2008, -6/+53Take this with a grain of salt, major news media reports on scientific articles tend to conveniently ignore parts of the article that aren't sensational, namely possibly confounding variables or the limitations from a small sample size. I'd rather see an article about hundreds of healthy men who are NOT already attending a fertility clinic, then control their soy intake, while controlling for other variables that may affect sperm count, THEN count their sperm.
- mieprowan, on 07/24/2008, -3/+47The sample size was 99 men and they were already attending a fertility clinic. I wouldn't lose any sleep over this one, soy-eating guys! Wait until they look at 200,000 men of all races and walks of life and screen for everything else that is known to affect fertility.
- moviscop, on 07/24/2008, -11/+41But, me soy horny!
- DeFex, on 07/24/2008, -1/+29"However, a UK expert stressed that most men in Asia eat more soy-based products with no fertility problems."
its probably some crap they use to process the soy with in the west. - ApokalypseNow, on 07/24/2008, -10/+35There's no such thing as soymilk - I mean, there's no soytit for it to come out of, right?
- mandarin, on 07/24/2008, -3/+26Yep. Try it.
- ColinZeal, on 07/24/2008, -3/+23And soy is very popular in... China?
This story doesn´t add up.
Wtf? - sockpuppets, on 07/24/2008, -0/+19There's someone locked in your basement isn't there?
- revmhatt, on 07/24/2008, -3/+19We need to start pumping soy into trailer parks.
- tazmeister, on 07/24/2008, -11/+27low sperm count != problems getting it up
low sperm count == harder to get someone pregnant
Getting rid of old sperm only once a week sounds little boring to me, I want to do it far more often myself, but that's just a personal preference.
Maybe eating soy would increase the desire for it more often. But then again it may not. And you or the other party involved might not want it more often. Or maybe you or they do.
plant oestrogens in foods such as tofu, soy mince or milk may interfere with hormonal signals.
OR it may not.
milk gives you gas if you are lactose intolerant, and cows and farters emit green houses gases
soy milk does not give you gas, and soy plants reduce CO2
men have estrogen in them already, but then more estrogen probably isn't good, but we still aren't sure if oestrogens really act just like taking more estrogen. It may. it may not.
But not digging this article may risk your life.
Or it may not.
Soy has been eaten in Asia for a long time, is it causing problems there? But then again, was it eaten as frequently?
Even if you love animals, and want to save them, if the population keeps growing soon there will not be enough resources for all the people and animals. So which is it, kill a person save a cow (to be killed later) OR start eating plants? Might as well get used to it now, and figure out how to fix the problems before you have no choice in the matter.
Did you know that the inhalation of high enough concentrations of dihydrogen oxide in the air may cause death? So does this make it bad? - noncn4mst, on 04/15/2009, -1/+17The chocolate flavored "Silk" is DELICIOUS! It's so thick - it seems like dessert.
- tazmeister, on 07/24/2008, -5/+20Now if you want a more direct and less ironic and satirical comment.
As the study points out there are parts of Asia where more soy is consumed daily than the max amount consumed by those in the study.
And fertility does not seem to be a problem there.
BUT if the people of the region have been eating soy for generations, may be those men that had lower sperm counts in the past didn't sire as many or any children, while those men resistant to it did. So over the generations there were fewer and few people descended from those me that were not resistant to soy. BUT in Europe and the US, soy has not been a staple in the diet until recently, so maybe there are just as many men here who are affected by soy that were affected far in the past in asia.
Of course if you think the world was created only 6000 years ago, then my idea above means I'm going to burn in hell.
The comment about getting rid of sperm once a week was not a slam, I just find the need to do so more often and enjoy that fact.
Basically this is a very early study on soy, but the idea that it might hurt your sperm count is scary enough to attract interest. So it must be right. Right?
Or it may not.... Ooops Sorry I slipped
And were the people in the study just like you? If not, does it really have any meaning to compare them to you? Maybe they are mostly hypochondriacs worried about their sperm count, and so thought the study was a free way to keep track. And maybe really its the stress from worrying about their sperm count that is hurting their sperm count.
(Now that's irony for you)
Or maybe since they started consuming soy, they started getting rid of old sperm more often and so when it came time to test them, they did not have the time to grow more of the little squiggly things. - jankind, on 07/24/2008, -4/+17Yes
- sockpuppets, on 07/24/2008, -3/+15Baby soy do.
- pilgrim3970, on 07/24/2008, -3/+14hmm.... I'm a vegan and my wife and I had NO problems having a child.
- getbuzy, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9I have 6 half asian children and my man had soy products as part of his every day asian diet. I call BS
- geobay, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9Actually dihydrogen oxide is acceptable among chemistry nerds.
- nbabasketball, on 07/23/2008, -8/+16Yeah, I never ate a lot of soy products myself. Mainly 'cause I didn't like 'em. Does anyone really like soymilk?
- trolleyfan, on 07/24/2008, -3/+11Well, given the popularity of soy over in Asia, it's probably a good thing then. I mean, *imagine* how many people would be there if their sperm *was* up to snuff...
...wait a minute. - bobartig, on 07/24/2008, -3/+11I have soy juice with my morning bowl of cereal. I've got the whole "Asian lactose intolerant" thing going on, so even though I like milk a lot, my mornings are much better with a soy alternative.
That also means I also have the "Asian's may not be less fertile after eating soy products" thing. Balances out?
I don't really like soy juice, but I think its the least worst alternative. - Jareth86, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/8950/hairfl1.pn ...

http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/ ... - johnpaul191, on 07/24/2008, -3/+111) *if* this held water, who cares. there are more than enough people in the world already
2) i know a LOT of vegetarians and vegans that have kids, and none that have had problems having kids after trying
3) the people i know that went to fertility doctors were people that ate pretty average american omnivorous diets.
that's unscientific knowledge based on people i know..... it's really not going to scare me from being vegan. actually, now that i think about it i know a few guys that has vasectomies and they were maybe all vegans? definitely vegetarians at least. - mandarin, on 07/24/2008, -1/+9I dunno but if Soy was the problem there wouldnt be a population problem in China....
- urbandistrict, on 07/24/2008, -1/+9...the study was quickly debunked when researchers considered the over-population of China.
- curtisag, on 07/24/2008, -4/+11Quickly... make soy products free for 3rd world countries.
- Jareth86, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8But it also decreases the risk of going bald/ slows hair loss. Tough call...
- philippbock, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7Good luck avoiding soy products and derivatives. Why don’t you go and have a look at the ingredient lists on the food in your kitchen and throw away everything that’s got soy in it. If you want to avoid soy, don’t buy processed food.
- Amlethus, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8So if I eat a lot of vegetables, I could get a new night job?
- Rhendal, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8Only once a week?
- twigboy, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8whats wrong with using preggers?
are u preggers? - liuite, on 07/24/2008, -3/+9soy sauce, soy milk and tofu is staple part of many asians' diet...yet china has the largest population in the world
- Cuchanu, on 07/24/2008, -2/+8It may reduce sperm count but there are still millions of the little guys.
- rald84, on 07/24/2008, -1/+7they each only have one kid though.
- ozydingo, on 07/24/2008, -3/+8A few weak objections to any conclusions drawn from this study:
1) (weak) The sample population was men already attending a fertility clinic, not exactly an unbiased sample.
2) (weaker) Cause & effect, cannot rule out the possibility that having the kind of hormonal makeup that results in a lower sperm count might cause men to be more likely to like soy products? More likely to be the type of person who goes for soy product marketing?
3) (weakest) What if the variable is not how much soy you consume, but how much soy you're willing to admit you consume? Er...ok maybe not.
Meh. - johnpaul191, on 07/24/2008, -5/+10i like soymilk and tofu. i consumed it before i was vegan.
- AngryAngryBrian, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Yes, drinking it right now. I had mixed feelings at first, but I don't drink regular milk at all now. Also lactose intolerant so unless I want to kill everyone in a 50 mile radius, I stick to the soy.
- mejusthavin, on 07/24/2008, -3/+8Funny how all of Asia doesn't seem to have this problem.
- altgeeky1, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6If that were true, I'd suffer from wrinkly fingers and I would never leave the house...
