- gavinhudson, on 06/04/2008, -3/+56Any such good news on beer?? *crossing fingers*
- Hiji, on 06/05/2008, -2/+38Yea, it cures ugliness. Especially in women.
- zedzedtop, on 06/05/2008, -0/+33Avoiding high fat food, also stops the effects of high fat food.
- ih2000, on 06/05/2008, -1/+23The French lifestyle is as much responsible for their health as their drinking of red wine is. The French have a great appreciation of food - they savour it, taking their time, and eat in moderate portions. When they drink, they also tend to drink moderately - one or two glasses with a meal is common. The British on the other hand tend to eat larger servings of food, wolfing them down, and binge drink frequently. The foods in Britain also seem to be less healthy than those in France - deep-friend snickers anyone?

- Bukowsky, on 06/05/2008, -0/+15There's actually quite a few antioxidants in Red Wine. Of course, you could get those same antioxidants from Red Grapes, but that's not as much fun.
- Hiji, on 06/05/2008, -0/+15Yes, Jack and Coke cures your ability to walk straight and control what comes out of your mouth.

- drgmdp, on 06/05/2008, -0/+13that's been proved true for about a decade, a cup of wine (just one cup!) a day keeps your heart healthy
- aptanalogy, on 06/05/2008, -0/+12In America we have deep fried twinkies.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -1/+13 And does grape juice provide the same benefits or is the alcohol important?
- geekchic, on 06/04/2008, -1/+13Well, presumably - they won't be obese after a while.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -1/+13If they're passed out, they can't eat more.

- jp12380, on 06/05/2008, -0/+10The resveratrol content of wine is related to the length of time the grape skins are present during the fermentation process. Thus the concentration is significantly higher in red wine than in white wine, because the skins are removed earlier during white-wine production, lessening the amount that is extracted [3]. Grape juice, which is not a fermented beverage, is not a significant source of resveratrol. A fluid ounce of red wine averages 160 µg of resveratrol, compared to peanuts, which average 73 µg per ounce [6]. Since wine is the most notable dietary source, it is the object of much speculation and research.
Cardiovascular Effects
Many studies suggest that consuming alcohol (especially red wine) may reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD). Several studies have demonstrated that resveratrol is an effective antioxidant [7-10]. It inhibits lipid peroxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) [7,8], prevents the cytotoxicity of oxidized LDL [7], and protects cells against lipid peroxidation [7]. It is thought that because it contains highly hydrophilic and lipophilic properties, it can provide more effective protection than other well-known antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E [7]. On the other hand, it is less effective than the antioxidants quercetin and epicatechin found in red wine [2]. Reduced platelet aggregation has also been demonstrated in studies on resveratrol, further contributing to its prevention of atherosclerosis [2,9]. To date, most of the research on resveratrol's antioxidant and anti-platelet properties has been done in vitro (in an artificial environment using test-tube or tissue-culture preparations). Further studies in animals and humans are necessary to determine whether resveratrol supplementation makes sense.

- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -1/+91 cup = good
8 cups = more gooder - OPTheory, on 06/05/2008, -0/+7The article seems to conclude that the polyphenols found in red wine are the "healthy chemicals" which have these great benefits for those who are keen on the high-fat diets. If you're looking for polyphenols, yerba mate and green tea have practically just as much of the "good stuff" as red wine. Eating fruit helps too.
On second thought, eating RIGHT is the key. Fat is not the enemy. - bagboyrebel, on 06/05/2008, -0/+7there was a study that showed numerous health benefits to drinking beer, but only in moderation.
- Charnoble, on 06/05/2008, -0/+6I had a roommate who was a doctor and he said that he would advise drinking to anyone because when he analyzed a cadaver in med school that (while alive) drank alcohol on a regular basis, it's Aorta was like that of a baby's. I asked him what the cadaver died of. He said liver failure.
- sockpuppets, on 06/05/2008, -0/+6uhhh... it is in pill form already.
- noseeme, on 06/05/2008, -1/+7Wait, so you're saying you don't like my epic man *****?
- Tyr7BE, on 06/05/2008, -2/+7Have you tried many different types? All those different bottles in the wine section of the liquor store means more than just different brands - each one has it own unique taste, texture, and fragrance. I love a lot of different types of wine, but there are some I simply can't stand.
Saying you don't like wine is like saying you don't like juice - there has to be _some_ kind of juice out there for everyone. Do some research on the Internet on what different types of wine taste like, and keep trying red wines and I'm sure you'll come up with something you enjoy. - marx2k, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!
- brstilson, on 06/05/2008, -1/+6You think a $12 bottle of wine is "quality?"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA - jasoninoakland, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4Resveratrol + polyphenols - both are good for you.
And guess what? Saturated fat is not really bad for you. Trans fat is. So are refined carbohydates. Guess what's largely missing from the French diet? WHAT A PARADOX.
I strongly suggest to anyone interested in the science behind diet & health to read Gary Taubes's "Good Calories, Bad Calories". He delves into over 600 studies to show that the conventional wisdom of the 1950s-1970s was better than the low-fat/nonfat hysteria of the 1980s and 1990s...which made people fat and unhealthy. - aptanalogy, on 06/05/2008, -1/+5FTW: ***** that well

IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!!! - OPTheory, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3What are the effects of a high fat diet anyway? Fat (the right fats) isn't what makes people fat in the first place - it's unused calories and carbs (energy) that get stored as fat reserves when you don't do anything with them...
Check out Michael Pollan's video here, he talks about how the French seem to be the exception to this so-called "fat is bad" rule: http://lifehacker.com/389192/michael-pollan-speaks ... - cnot3, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3Wheres the fun in that?

- HanSolo69, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3One or two glasses? How much good does a bottle a night do and does it balance out the liver damage?
- DiggzDE, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3Too bad it is only a temporary fix. Those morning afters are a bitch.
- BrendanSheehan, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3Haha, red wine is good for you though. We've known this for years. Also they eat duck, and use good olive oils too.
- jp12380, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3What is interesting is, I saw some study that showed just a little bit of fat supoosedly stopped any benefit to anti oxidants had.
Now we show that wine will counteract high fat diet. - Johnny5th, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3Yellowtail FTW
- dstz, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3According to Wikipedia red grapes juice contains in average more than half as much resveratrol as red wine.
