That's even happening as we speak because doctors prescribe them when they shouldn't, and doctors need to be tighter about that.
And if we sell heart, cholesterol, and neurological medication over the counter, are you telling me people will choose the correct medication without a doctor's help and that no one's going to try to save money on a doctor's visit and take the wrong drug? They'll do research online, try what a friend is using, ask a family friend nurse who isn't qualified to prescribe in the first place, go with a cheaper but 'similar' drug, or in a worst case scenario decide in the store.
Some drugs should only be prescribed by doctors as a matter of public health. Other drugs like pot should be legal because you can't kill yourself with it and if you take it for the wrong medical condition all that's going to happen is you get high. Take the wrong thyroid/heart med/epilepsy med or in the wrong dosage and you can die. - lucidguru, on 05/28/2008, -2/+3Yes all antibiotics should be sold over the counter --> It's not the relatively healthy people that create diseases like MRSA, CDIF, etc. because their immune systems are functioning. DOCTORS are the cause of these superbugs because they use massive amounts of antibiotics on people who are terminally ill and have compromised immune systems.
Your argument about taking the correct medication is a flawed one. People take drugs all the time without a doctors help (try buying drugs on the internet sometime) and they will continue to do so. A doctor should be there for medical knowledge. This advice should not come with an insane price tag.
You are defending a broken medical system. You are harming yourself by defending the same people who rip you off. I'm glad that you need "protection" from these drugs, but I would much rather have fair prices and an open market. - lucidguru, on 05/28/2008, -3/+1All drugs should be legalized and sold "over the counter." The drug war and physician's insane belief that they have the right to tell you what you can and cannot put into your body does very little to change the black market.
