- MangalaIII, on 04/26/2008, -0/+10It's still being tested jackass.
- unpolloloco, on 04/26/2008, -0/+10Nausea and hair loss are the least of concerns with chemotherapy drugs - if they were it, there'd be no reason to be searching for alternative treatments.
- jggube, on 04/26/2008, -0/+10"Professor Quentin Pankhurst is pioneering the research at the Royal Institution's new £3.5 million laboratory off Piccadilly." -- If he's successful, that building is more than worth the cost (and will probably pay itself).
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -1/+9lol wut?
- jimmy17, on 04/26/2008, -0/+6Thankfully the US isn't the only country in the world performing medical research.
- Rikkochet, on 04/26/2008, -0/+5I'll translate:
"I'm a voter"
Scary, huh? - finnmaccool, on 04/26/2008, -0/+5"If we can get the magnetic particles to migrate to the cancer cells..." That's always been the problem. The magic bullet strategy has been around for many years - the payload changes but the guidance system is still a work in progress. Still, if it works for Magneto, maybe it'll work for these guys.
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -1/+6lol republicanz
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4Maybe they'll come out with something to help people detect sarcasm.
- serenearia, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4I like the idea of cell targeted therapy. Having gone through chemo myself, it's a great idea to look at creating a drug that will the area with the tumor. But with most cancer patients, chemo is the second treatment after removal of the tumor. Chemo is one of those catch all "let's get whatever microscopic rough cells that are floating in the body still". I like the idea, but curious to know what the effects are systemically due to this new treatment. Hopefully there will be more developments.
- krete, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4Am I the only one who always gets the feeling that "telegraph.co.uk" is *****?
- kylere, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4Why do I read about some miracle advance like this every few months and still keep losing friends and family to cancer?
- Phipman, on 04/26/2008, -2/+5Gah!
This was to be my science fair project next year. I'm completely serious. - inactive, on 04/26/2008, -1/+4THE BIG YELLOW ONE'S THE SUN!
- scotticus, on 04/26/2008, -0/+3"I just hope that such a device was not invented only to be buried by big pharma et al. "
Big pharma is involved in inventing these things. There is interest in pharma in developing diagnostic tools which could be used to target their therapies to individual patients. If you can diagnose a disease better, it means more patients, which means more people who can take and benefit from your drug.
"Diagnostic techniques are no better than a shaman's -- I mean, checking the state of your prostate by getting a finger shoved up your anus, or worse, getting a camera inserted your urethra? Checking the state of your internal organs by tapping your ribs? Excuse me?"
We have better techniques (MRI and the like) but they're expensive. If everybody got an MRI every time they went to the doctor, the system would bankrupt. - BryanJK, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2your logic fails simply because we do not live in a natural environment... and besides, your humans are still evolving and cannot cure everything that is thrown at it
- drpleau, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2I'm just wondering will this work with cancer that is in the bones, like Multiple Myeloma?
- Farik, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2This sounds very similar to the Kanzius Machine, I saw a 60 Minutes segment on it a few weeks back. The principal is very similar except he uses radio frequency. One of the cancer researchers said it was the most promising technology in the past 2 decades of his research.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/10/60minute ... - inactive, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2hey buddy, you are a nutjob. guess what even if what you are saying is true, you are still a nutjob,
i'm not saying that you are right, i'm not saying you aren't right, i am saying that either way, your still a nutjob - menacingcheese, on 04/26/2008, -1/+3Wow you're an idiot. I was going to take the time to explain why you're an idiot, but honestly you're not worth it. So I'll just leave it at you're an idiot.
- theenginedriver, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2Don't know why you're being dugg down, because this is precisely true. The trouble is that cancers occur in a wide variety of tissues, among many distinct kinds of cells. There are certain markers on the cell surface that can act as a sort of "homing signal," but applying this knowledge is quite a bit trickier than it sounds.
- jimmy17, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2True but these problems stem from the same issue.
- painperdu, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2True. I've been reading about "breakthroughs" for over 30 years. Each one promised 10 years from now would be the end of cancer.
To be honest, I think it's the non-specialist journalists that take a small bit of science news and gives us false hopes. I think these reporters wish to be the cancer breakthrough reporters where their name and reporting will be tied to some important news. - derekivey, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2How do they program the antibodies to know which cells are cancer cells? Also, how do they know when they have reached the cancer cells?
- Icupnimpn2, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Antibodies work through physical detection. Imagine if an antibody was the top part of your body. An antibody, like your body, has two long appendages or "arms." At the tip of each arm is a set of bumps and notches that would be sort of like your fingers.
Also, every molecule or particle in your body has a real physical shape. It's hard to think so small, but even microscopic cells and such have bumps and ridges and a distinct shape.
What these scientists are doing is trying to find a shape on the surface of cancer cells that is not on the surface of healthy, normal cells. If they can find this physical difference, they can create an antibody that has bumps and notches on its arms that will only match up with the cancer cells.
Alternatively, imagine if there are millions of the same key repeated over and over on the surface of the cancer cell. The scientists are trying to create a matching lock for that key. - Icupnimpn2, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2There could be any number of answers to your question. For one thing, cancer isn't one disease but is really a generalized term that we use to easily refer to a collection of possibly hundreds of different diseases that all involve abnormal cell growth. So, It's quite possible that there will never be one "cure" for cancer. What we really need are hundreds of cures for hundreds of separate diseases. In some cases we may never find a cure at all. Perhaps we have to work the prevention angle: stop smoking, eat less fatty foods, etc.
- jabbar, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1yeah, your explanation is way easier to understand. very well done.
- lennybird, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Apologies, I was just trying to say that so many people claim "CURE FOR CANCER!" - Thus, stating far too soon whether it truly is a cure for cancer or not. Will it or will it not only target cancer cells? If unsure, then it's still in testing and they shouldn't claim it does like the headline states. That's all I'm saying. I do hope there will be a cure for cancer; it's just getting frustrating.
- PopeOfDope, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1The light used to heat the iron oxide particles is in the near infrared region, and it won't penetrate more than 1 cm of tissue so I doubt it would be able to treat any cancers in bone.
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1How rich are your friends and family?
- SteveIsTheDude, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Yep.... All the ***** about us all living to be 150 years old comes with one minor stipulation... Mega wealth....
- scotticus, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1Similar therapies (antibody targeted) already exist and they've very expensive (~$200,000 for a treatment cycle)
- sb66, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1There's been major developments in this field recently
http://www.nano-shells.com/
This type of thing may be the answer at last...hopefully! - inactive, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2dude, even if what you said was true, you sound like a ***** idiot that can't even spell america correct
did you mispeling america make americans dumb or something? it's like people mispel words they don't like as if they are disgracing them,
oh wow, you spelled fox "faux" wow they are so embaressed now, and me as an american are really hurt by you spelling the country wrong
dumbass - Skepsis, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1There is something like this already in the works, only a little different.
John Kanzius discovered the same thing, only with radio waves. - jabbar, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1they will have to find a cell surface marker that is specific to only cancer cells and not somatic cells. they will know when they reach the cancer cells because (i am totally assuming) they will have a detector that will only detect cells that have bound the antibody, with those cells giving some sort of signal, be it UV, light emitting, or radiological. or some other signal they can come up with. being as blood will likely be the route of administration, it doesnt take long for blood to circulate and it will reach its target fairly quickly. my question, going along with your first one is i wonder which cell surface marker they would be looking for. now that i think of it, if its an intracellular signal, it could take longer to get in and would be WAY more tricky to target. damn telegraph article doesnt give details, only impending hope. peer reviewed article anyone?
- Tarnum, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1There is always a choice - bald for a year or dead in a year. Most women chose baldness and life.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2You're an Idiot. You know NOTHING. Sheep will be sheep. I DARE you to investigate nutrition. 90% of all alternative natural health books are written by Western establishment trained M.D.s and Ph.D.s.
- Icupnimpn2, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2Medications have to be proven to be relatively safe and effective before they are brought to the general market. However, Phase 1 trials for medications such as this one are always going on and always need patients, and patients in dire need usually get priority. If you know someone you think might make a good test subject for this therapy, try to get in touch with the drug researchers. There's a chance they good get years' worth of therapy for free. The downside is, of course, that the drug has not yet been shown to be either safe or effective.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Disgusting little worm. Reported.
- Tarnum, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Your body was made to give birth at 15, live to 30 years and die. We live 3x longer because of the better medicine, dentistry, etc.
But, if you refuse chemo, it;s ok with me. More meds for the other people. - Humzaseo, on 07/30/2008, -0/+0This is the reason that the cancer patients have to suffer from complete hair loss due the side effects of some treatments. but as many hair loss info providing sites like http://hairlosscounter.com/ suggest that such tipe of baldness or hair loss automatically retreat after the treatment of cancer.
- gkiltz, on 04/27/2008, -0/+0These things have been possible in the laboratory, and in theoretical chemistry for a couple of decades now. But alas, like the clockwise-rotating internal combustion engine, the jump from the laboratory to the real world is one it has yet to come close to making!
- parkernicky50, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0I read your post it is nice and informative. I liked it very much so i vote for it. Keep posting. If you have any new and interesting post, please share with me.
- Macrophage, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1Hopefully this type of Treatment/research can help Sen.Kennedy. We need him now more than ever
PEACE
John - 25ballerc, on 06/05/2008, -0/+0Great article! I found another interesting article at http://baldness1.blogspot.com that I'm sure everyone would find helpful.
