- Metahero, on 10/03/2008, -0/+17Better list:
#1) Eat Healthy and get your heart rate up for 30 minutes a day.
#2) Burn more calories than you consume.
Instant weight loss- I guarantee it. - miggy82, on 10/02/2008, -0/+166.) Spending too much time on Digg
- smackydoodle, on 10/03/2008, -1/+146.) Thinking Wii Fit is a substitute for the gym
- sbcea, on 10/02/2008, -0/+126. Not working out at all ... ever ... zip ... zilch ... nada.
- Jaenns, on 10/02/2008, -1/+12Great info! Many people are not aware of these things! I would, for example, add to No.2 a trick that works for me when trying to work on the intensity. I start at 60 and run at 60 for about a half minute to minute until I become bored with it, then I increase to 65 or 70 and run another a minute to 2, then I increase further, 75 for 3 or 5 minutes, etc This is when the well known adrenaline feeling starts that gets me going even further. This is at least what works for me in regards to increasing the intensity instead of relaxing :)
Anyway, thanks for sharing this one! - jamauss, on 10/03/2008, -1/+11Wearing a gray/sweat shirt when I workout helps - gross as it sounds - I can kind of tell how hard I've worked out by how much sweat has soaked the shirt.
Also - it helps to work out in the morning more than at night. Morning workouts burn stored up fat rather than calories you've eaten throughout the day.
Don't forget you need to build muscle too in addition to cardio. You can't only use the elliptical/treadmill and expect to see great results. Remember to hit the weights too. - Import98, on 10/03/2008, -0/+10Good tips if you only use a treadmill. There are other ways to lose weight though.....eating better, weight training, etc.
- Paulish, on 10/03/2008, -0/+9You oversimplify. You are not taking into account things like nutritional value of food. A lot of food with good nutrition is high in calories. So people will avoid nutritional food and eat "low calorie" stuff, which the usually end up eating more of anyways cause it is so empty of nutrition.
For example I remember an article that said eat hard pretzels instead of nuts, because nuts have calories and fats. I guess they didn't realize lots of nuts have polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, the kind that actually help you lose weight. They must not have seen the nutritional value of nuts, and so now there are undoubtedly people eating empty calories in the form of pretzels.
It also doesn't take into account bad stuff like trans fats and high fructose corn syrup. - psykiv, on 10/03/2008, -2/+11Losing weight is simple.
if calories out > calories in, you lose weight. calories in > calories out, you gain. - Xihix, on 10/03/2008, -0/+8Pretty good info. I like the part about the sport drinks... Seriously, when I see people drinking a gatorade while they're on their elliptical, well, whats the point? Just drink water. Also, if you do use an incline on the treadmill, don't make it so high so you have to hold onto the machine... I see that too often as well. And don't forget to lift, building muscles helps burns calories as well.
- LanEvo, on 10/03/2008, -0/+7EAT LESS MOVE MORE
- zephyr42, on 10/03/2008, -0/+7Dugg for ninja-like subtlety.
- smarusich, on 10/03/2008, -0/+7Right, and the 40g of Sugar in them is also soooo good for you. No thanks, I'll stick to water and get my salt from where God intended me to, a salt shaker.
- Bebel, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6As long as you don't think you're fine if your mind is telling you something hurts, this sounds like a pretty decent idea.
- smarusich, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6True for weight loss, not always true for FAT loss, and come on, that's what most want. Carb intake needs to be limited (not overly though, they do serve a very important purpose) for fat loss. And also, don't be afraid of fat. So many people are unaware that fat helps metabolize fat.
- Paulish, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6Without water son, you wouldn't exist!
- Takfam, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5Your marine buddy has been programmed with the typical boot camp marine corps *****. Your central nervous system needs to be overtaxed to push your limits, true. However you can do so safely without the macho HOO-RAH line of crap.
- jamauss, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5dang man, 40 lbs in 10 weeks is almost borderline unhealthy. Hope you didn't hurt yourself during any of that weight loss.
kudos to you though for the achievement. Care to share what your workout was made up of? - Bebel, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5Gotta disagree with #2. Keeping my mind off of the workout keeps me going back to the gym. Instead of getting tired of it, I look forward to watching the next episode of house, heroes, lost, etc.
btw, dugg for single page list article. Short, sweet, and right to the point. - Edudris, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5Watching TV...
I dunno, but I'm one of those types that gets super bored while using the cardio equipment and eventually get bored and doze off. But if I have the TV around, I might not work out as intensely, but I will keep up the workout for the full duration thus burning more calories in the long run. Besides, the TV gives me a point straight ahead to focus on, so I run straight ahead on the treadmill and don't doze off to the side.
But lifting weights - that's a different story. Lift weights while watching TV? Get a broken foot! - usbserial, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5Another major factor in working out is motivation. A while ago I exercised with the idea that I was burning calories. That didn't work for me and I ended up stopping after a week. Later I started working out with the idea that the goal is to elevate my heart rate... that's it. Because really, with the food we eat these days, calorie input vs exercise, you'll never win. Exercise for 30 minutes and you lost it all with a soda. The reason exercising is healthy isn't the calorie burn.
- Wartz, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5Find some activity you want to get good at that requires exercise/fitness. If you want to get good at said activity, exercise becomes not a goal in itself, but rather a milestone to a goal. For me that activity is canoe racing.
- cmapes2, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4The last point is incorrect.
Recent studies have shown that cellular respiration levels remain elevated for over 36 hours after exercise (aka elevated metabolic rate for 36 hours). Although the principle is sound that you should make a point of not overeating (duh), the article implies that the only calories burned are the ones that are burned while on the treadmill. You will continue to burn calories at an elevated rate for A WHILE longer after your workout is done. - barryiggins, on 10/03/2008, -1/+5my wrist and forearm are in spectacular shape, but none of the ladies seem to appreciate this.
stuck up lesbos. - PhillyMJS, on 10/03/2008, -0/+46. Ordering a pizza from inside the car before departing the gym parking lot after your workout.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4Wow, only five items on this list?
One could fill a library with the stupid mistakes people make trying to lose weight. - VcTrMASO, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4I park my car in the back of big parking lots all the time to avoid getting dings on my door, but I guess it helps to get a little extra walking into my day. Also skip the soft drinks every day and drink water instead. The extra 200+ empty calories per meal can't be a good thing.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -1/+5How about YOU STOP EATING SO MUCH.
Maybe that'll help you lose weight. - lsloany, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4This made me laugh out loud, I don't know why considering I'm American and I just finished a good workout.
- cptfantastic1, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3Good stuff to know. I will use this and keep off the chicken wings as well
- krahzee, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Best type of cardio to do. There is no impact on the knees and spine the way running does.
- syda, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3this is too centered around cardio training on a treadmill... i swim which keeps me in shape, and yes, i do change it up a bit by changing stroke, speed (sprint vs. distance), etc. but there's no holding on to the handlebars in the water.
- cable626, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3haha if only everyone knew about it!!
go to crossfit.com and follow mark rippetoe's advice if you want to gain some extra muscle!!
I've been doing a 5x5 routine for a while... if you eat right, work hard, and sleep enough you can't go wrong. good luck everyone - krahzee, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Add friends to that list. Some people can go the gym with a friend and stay focused, others get WAY too distracted and only get half the workout in because they are too busy talking for ten minutes between sets.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -1/+46) Pushing your own lawnmower around on saturdays.
7) Eating food at home after making it there.
8) Cleaning your own home.
9) Just generally stop seeing all those extra services as necessity ***** and get off your fat ass! - abajaj2280, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4that's the way i see it
- Samohtneas, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3On the contrary, water is the best!
- lanzemurdok, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3I find what helps is to be just be random as hell. Go from one machine to the other, run fast, walk slow RUN FASTER, jog a bit.. keep yourself interested and telling you "i'm going to do this for this long, and then this for that long"
honestly that's the only way i can last an hour. - bhavinp, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4Most of this is common sense.
I propose a better idea, sit back and relax and learn some photoshop skills. - Easyoffbam, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Drink plenty of water to stop you from feeling hungry when you are actually thirsty. Eat filling foods like wholegrain foods (not too heavy though), apples, heck, even biscuits as they satisfy cravings and fill you up. You don't have to push yourself every day (too much monotonous exercise will injure and demotivate you) just do a few short sprints one day, an easy jog the next, and a rest or a shorter easy jog the day after. Add cross-training like cycling if you want to mix it up more.
- baddriver, on 10/03/2008, -0/+31) Just do crossfit
2) done - soapycub, on 10/03/2008, -0/+26. Not doing squats or deadlifts.
