- swillies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I used to be obese, and if anyone is seriously considering slimming down, here's my advice: You don't need to pay any weight loss sites or weight loss programs, you do need to cut down the quantity of food you eat and cut out as much of the junk as you can stand to, you absolutely need to start exercising, even if it's just walking to and from work at first, and what helped me the most, was just keeping a little note of my weight once a week so I could see progress. You can do this with notepad or a spreadsheet. I lost 80 lbs and I now run marathons and play hockey. It was without any doubt the best decision I have ever made.
- daedal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Will try out Traineo so I can keep a log of my jogs. Looks pretty slick and you can't beat the price.
- fearofcorners, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12The reason why there are so many weight loss fads and gimmicks is that they don't work. If they did, there would be no market for them.
- anteyekon4myst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10fitday.com has been free and around for atleast 5 years. All the functionality and look Web 2.0 has now, they've had for years. I dont in anyway work for them. I'm a personal trainer and I've been using it for a long time.

- DirtyWorker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Excellent, just what I've been looking for.
- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Someone needs to make a good Beer based diet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can't I just pay you some money to do it for me?
I'll do anything to lose weight except eat right and exercising. - bkaraff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll second the big props to fitday.com
The other site that really helped me reach my goals was http://johnstonefitness.com/
(which i also found via DIGG). The forums are excellent resources. Very low meathead factor.
I was 220lbs in Feb when I found John Stone's page, today I weighed in at 161.2lbs
Im a 36y/o sysadmin, and I recently took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a hobby.
Rolling with a bunch of 20y/o wrestlers is reason enough to keep you in shape!
The best e-book on the subject is "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" by Tom Venuto
http://www.mininova.org/tor/462367 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use traineo, and have been very pleased with the interface and the results I have seen.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can have junk food too – just know how many calories you're using by having it. I limited myself to 1,000 calories a day, and I could fit in a 200-calorie dark chocolate bar when I wanted to. 12 Lay's Stax potato crisps give you 160 calories. I realized how little I needed to eat when I found out I could burn only 400 calories by running 20 minutes on an elliptical trainer. Since then I've lost 40 pounds over the course of 8 months (about 5 pounds a month) from 225 lbs. to 185. Exercise is key, though – it reduced my appetite, and it made me feel better without having to eat constantly like I used to. But you have to do it for yourself – don't set unrealistic goals that you'll only feel bad for breaking, and don't deprive yourself of anything you absolutely have to have – just limit the quantity you take in. I was able to get a Ben & Jerry's pint of ice cream, but I ate it only a few spoonfuls at a time and savored each bite.
- spahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Absolutely, swillies. Two months ago I finally started working on losing weight. My choice for exercise was cycling, though. Since I've started, i've dropped about 12 lbs, and my riding distance has gone from 3 miles to 20+ miles every time out. It doesn't take long for the weight to start melting off.
- greenmammal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These websites are pretty good, I just wish they allowed to proper access to the data. I find statistics like my weight changing quite interesting - using this kinda puts me off, because I can't play with the data in Excel.
- argh44z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fitday (the program - $20) is well worth it.

- Kii666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I lose weight the John Basedow way.
- ztrek7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a site about "reducing the size of your HTML and css files to improve loading times." might be popular. *idea forming*
I didn't know if this article was fat people or fat apps at first. I need websites on both :) - MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1traineo lets you export your data as CSV.
- wyomingred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Penn & Teller tell me that weight loss is *****. Well, actually they say that trying to turn a body-type that's endomorph into a mezomorph is dangerous an unhealthy. They also forget to mention that those body-types are pseudo-science and are widely disused.
Basically, I'm told to worry about my caloric intake and my heart and the rest follows suit. - tower31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*****, I am on that right now. I have now problem selling you the recipe. DVD included...
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll second that, big props to johnstonefitness.com and "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" by Tom Venuto - If you like the book after downloading it, buy it.
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else read this as "fart-off?"
- BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't suppose anyone knows of something that will tell me what to do each day, and intelligently ramp things up as I progress (or not).
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A good place to start would be http://webcast.berkeley.edu/courses/archive.php?seriesid=1906978374
...the Berkeley "Introduction to Nutrition" course. Check out the lectures especially on Obesity and Health at Every Size. The statistics on weight loss programs are astounding. - lauralemay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ugh, fitday's interface is just hideous. And it hasn't changed much in like six years. Oh wait, they turned it purple.
Fitday does do well for reports and in food tracking assuming your food is in the database. If its not there's a whole lot of tedious data entry. Compare with, say, http://www.calorie-count.com which has a MUCH stronger foods database and one that can be added to and updated by its users (user generated content!). Plus: tagging. Its a lot easier to find stuff on CC.
CC could be better at reports but its pretty darn good, and free. - nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with the fitday, I got the offline program and so I dont know if the online does the same, but its got tons of cool graphs that can chart anything from how much potassium your eating, to the size increase of your biceps over the past 3 months. Just wish they could make it a little prettier. I havent tried any of the other sites, but reading there descriptions it sounds like they leave out basal metabolic rates when calculating calories burnt. If traineo says the average user burns 200 and something calories they are missing about 1300 from what people burn just by living.
- mapls, on 03/09/2009, -0/+0Thanks. I needed these.
Weight Watchers Recipe Portal :
http://www.weightwatchers-recipes.info - funwithdick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got some really big weight loss tips from fast-weightloss.blogspot.com blog.
- SamanthaPickles, on 12/10/2008, -0/+0This type of thing is really cool. When dealing with weight loss I think is important to track your progress and find new innovative ways to help with your goals. I know sometimes my biggest challenge is finding new and healthy recipes to make for my family. I have a friend whose brother seems to come up with fun new workout plans. I tend to stick with my Green Tea Extract when it comes to supplements tho. It just works. I feel very energized all the time and have lost a ton of weight since I started taking it. If anyone is interested the site is http://greenteaevolution.com
- user305, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or you can just pray the 2.0 way to lose some weight :)
http://www.pray20.com - qasabah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So much for a site about reducing the size of your html and css files to improve loading times.
Confused.
Quick, digg down my comment and spare me the embarrassment. - evanlive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I needed sites like these.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I live for the day when Digg does not have an article with 'Web 2.0' in it.
