They *would* make that up.... and stop calling me Shirley - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -14/+96Having smoked weed all day every day for seven years straight I can verify the validity of this study.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+79But you had already forgotten it, so we have to keep reminding you.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -8/+82I smoked almost an 8th a day for a little over a year straight and I'm not suffering any long term mental problems. When I quit smoking it took about a week or so to get a 'clear head' again though. The best way I could describe it was just a haze like something was clogged up, but I'm back to normal now and occasionally smoke with friends.
Drinking a case of beer every day for a year straight would completely destroy your body on the other hand. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+88Junkyarddawg, that's the case because many lazy and stupid people decide to start doing a bunch of drugs when they are kids. The weed didn't make them dumb and lazy, they were just lazy and dumb to begin with. There are also a ***** load of lazy dumbasses who drink water, does water cause that? No, it's the logical fallacy, post hoc ergo propter hoc.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -23/+95What about the "psychological disorders" the anti-drug lobby has been whining about lately? No evidence? Surely they wouldn't make that up...

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+50Thanks for the news! But I already knew about this, almost 4 years ago when i first read it.
- cruzlee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44I live in the Netherlands. Everybody here knows what that means. As I have a couple of good friends who have been smoking large amounts of weed for some years I think have a right to say a few words here.
Maybe smoking it doesn't cause brain damage, but I do want to say that most people I know that have been heavy smokers in the past were having severe difficulty to maintain a job or education. You could compare it to a very intense WoW addiction if you like. They had to quit smoking it (which wasn't as easy as some people say it is) to pick up their lives again.
I myself smoke every now and then. Sometimes during the weekend when I know I don't need to do stuff for the next couple of hours. I find it very relaxing and a perfect way to unwind without loosing my rationality and coordination like with alcohol.
Bottom line: THC is much more innocent than alcohol, but you still need to be very cautious with habitual, daily smoking.
It can mess up your life almost as much as alcohol can, even without doing any brain damage. Sorry if I spoil your party. - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41Your mistaken if you think only young kids smoke weed. Some of the best bud I ever got was off of people in thier 40's and 50's. I've smoked weed with college professors, high school teachers, architects, engineers, doctors, my accountant......The list could go on.
- Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40Just look at Kumar. He got accepted into medical school and he stashes weed in his books.

- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32My dad smokes weed
He came in one day and told me he's always wanted to see a midget on a giant toilet because it would be hilarious to see his legs dangling over the edge. - theGOG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30That's what I told the principal.
She didn't believe me. :( - nebrfan, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36Jebus you little potheads are defensive - the point of my original comment was MODERATION. Too much of anything is bad. period.
- nebrfan, on 10/12/2007, -17/+39I call B.S. - true, pot isn't going to cause mental problems - but it IS going to cause COPD (lung disease), athersclerosis, MIs, etc. etc. I AM NOT saying that it should be illegal, I'm just urging common sense - if you smoke an ounce of ANYTHING every DAY it will hurt your body. Moderation is the key. Booze is fine, not every day. Smoke is fine, not every day. Life is too short to have it snared in the daily ritual of one substance.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27"but it IS going to cause COPD (lung disease),"
Just so you know, marijuana does not necessarily have to be absorbed through the lungs. You can bake stuff with it, put it in vaporizers, or add it to tea/milk (bhang)... so there is no smoke involved. Don't listen to everything they tell you on TV. - dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29"What about the "psychological disorders" the anti-drug lobby has been whining about lately?"
They are probably talking about my roomate's crazy mood swings when his supply runs out. - metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20@ Endersgame
You did a ***** ounce a day?? No wonder your ***** up. People need to start looking at pot more like beer.
I just did .3 of a gram. I'm pretty ***** up. - sharph, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23i've noticed a lot of these "marijuana isn't as bad as the hype makes it out to be" articles on digg, and i've gotten the point already. it's common sense to anyone who has been exposed to pot use that it's not really all that bad. (and if you're wondering, no, i'm not a pothead... i've never smoked in my life. but a lot of my friends do.) its almost as if pro-marijuana articles are a formula for getting dugg, and i feel like its getting old. of course, digg is a (somewhat) free forum, so whatever the masses want i guess...
- mem0ryburn, on 10/12/2007, -11/+31I've smoked pot daily for almost four years and not daily but pretty heavily for several years before that and I know for a fact that my brain does not function the way it used to. Sorry if that's not what you kiddies want to hear but it's true.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Thank you for speaking the truth! Weed is not completely harmless. It's not harmful enough to be illegal but it is still a substance capable of ruining your life if you let it. Moderation is key.
- EndersGame, on 10/12/2007, -11/+28megaton definitely, I am a huge advocate of the legalizatoin of pot but I really feel like its caused brain damage to me. My memory is affected a little but more importantly I notice my motivation has completely disappeared along with a lot of my emotions. I don't feel the same happiness that I used to feel before I smoked, which kind of goes hand in hand with the motivation. Its very hard to explain, but I can tell I am not the same person. I am not social at all anymore, I almost can't function in social situations.
I am just putting this out there because kids like me read these stories saying that pot is harmless and then we go out and overdue it. I smoked about half an ounce to an ounce of pot a day with my friend and it affected both of us. He is now schizophrenic and there is absolutely no history of it in his family. I am not saying it was the pot for him, he did take shrooms a couple of times. Also, if you smoke pot like me its very bad for your lungs, think about all that resin that gets caked up in your pipe. That same resin is getting caked up in your lungs and effectively putting tiny holes in your lungs.
If you are gonna smoke, just do it in moderation. Realize that its not bad for you in moderation especially with such tools like the vaporizer, but don't pay much mind to all these studies because weed is not some miracle drug that is completely harmless. And just because you smoked a lot of pot and are the same doesn't mean everybody will get the same results. Some brains are weaker to the effects of weed just like some brains are weaker to the effects of alcohol. - th3heretic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Im tired of the argument "IT doesn't do brain damage", what it really does is change your life style. I don't care if it doesn't modify your brain physically but *most* of the people I know who smoke weed only care about how long it might be until next time they get baked doesn't matter the least bit what happens between then at all to them. So while it might not kill your brain, it destroys your life style so its *basically* the same. Sure some people do not follow the same path, but the majority do. Commence digg down.

Sonny Bono was NOT a pothead! He was a Republican, you insensitive clod!
He was slow because of all the Vicodin he was taking, not from smoking dope. Hell, I bet if Sonny Bono just stuck to smoking weed, rather than popping oxys, he never would have skied into that tree, and would still be with us today, perhaps even seeking the Presidency.... - dark1587, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24Too much of any thing will be detrimental to your health:
Food, Water, Cigarettes, Alcohol. and yes, even weed...
Digg me down, but you all know it's true. - francisew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Weed doesn't cause serious brain degradation, but it does seriously impair motivation, memory and reasoning skills on a short to medium term basis (from when smoked to a few months later). It's not the worst thing one can do, but I feel bad for those who think it has no effect on them.
The worst thing is that so many people just get stoned all the time, and are never in a clear-thinking state. Some people I know are stoned 24/7, and it takes away a lot of their personality and charm. - oxdeltaxo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+30@JD223
During the last semester of high school I smoked a joint every night and I saw the highest marks I had received in high school. As long as your not high during class you'll do fine, as soon as your start smoking pot before class your a retard.
@dustyshadow
What other drugs does your friend take? - zeroduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16You don't hear too much about people other than high school and college students smoking--but it's much bigger than that. It's just that professionals are much more discrete about it than your average student.
- bIuebonics, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19interesting, because i've smoked for many years and am fully capable of doing power rule definite and indefinite integrations in my head faster than anyone i've met.
- Dundasbro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I have a history of Schizophrenia in my family so I avoid the stuff. I encourage legalization of cannabis and have no problem with people smoking it but I don't really wanna take the risk.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+41netdroid9, marijuana only causes serious mental problems if you already had an existing problem. It merely amplifies your previously existing mental illness, in some rare occasions. The same can be said of alcohol. Marijuana does not CAUSE psychosis, it just sometimes amplifies what you had anyways.
Also...marijuana doesn't cause lung cancer, sorry. - buckeye45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13i'm getting ads from google about meth rehabilitation clinics. thanks, digg.
- SenorGato, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Smoking pot everyday takes maturity. You can smoke weed anywhere, anytime, but you have to get your sh*t done.
I always go to the gym and handle all the work I have to do before I sit and relax with the girlfriend with a couple blunts.
I love watching true potheads. Not people who let the drug take over their life, but the people who can smoke a blunt, be high, and still work on their car. Theres no need for that image they give potheads in the movies, people shouldn't want that image.
I'm also high right now. - becomethesea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I hate the FDA. Articles like this make my heart sing.
- CheezIt9109, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16robato: I think you are wrong.
The users of Digg are *not* more "in the know".
They just think they are. Then they sit and circle jerk over things like pro-cannibus articles, pro-mac articles, anti-MS articles, pro-ubuntu articles, and so forth.
The goverment and other organizations may lie about Marijuana use, but it's getting to the point that pro-Marijuana people use the same shady ass tactics.
Take this article. "No brain damage". You can do a hell of a lot to negatively impact various functions your brain performs without causing brain damage. Marijuana happens to be one of them. Perhaps someday I'll go through my neuro stuff and get you some actual quotes and figures, only to be dugg down because I'm not a raving imbecile supporting weed.
/supports legalization of marijuana - jaymzv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14that"s wut ive ben triing to tell my mom. but she wont beleev me.
- LowRentDiggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"So while it might not kill your brain, it destroys your life style so its *basically* the same. Sure some people do not follow the same path, but the majority do. Commence digg down."
I wouldn't say the majority do. Most of my acquaintances smoke pot daily but they don't live their lives for the next bong hit. They don't act any different than people who are addicted to caffeine, nicotine or sugar. They all get ornery and stupid when they don't have their "fix" in due time. Of course, the age of your friends may have something to do with it. Marijuana users in their 20s are going to be less responsible than those in their 30s and 40s, just the same as non users. - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Yes why believe what people have known for years to be verified by science? When you can believe the words of your political and religious leaders............they would never lie to you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23Actually nebrfan, you are wrong. A somewhat recent study has shown that marijuana does NOT cause lung cancer, I repeat, it does NOT cause lung cancer, even for heavy users. In fact, an even more recent study showed that alochol is over 6 X more harmful than marijuana, and ecstasy.
- megaton, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20I can only speak only anecdotally, but over 7 years of chronic marijuana use has left this pro-pot geek with a severely decimated memory capacity -- both short- and medium-term -- even after 2 years of sobriety.
I believe very strong that marijuana should be legalized -- it's an absurd thing to criminalize use of such an innocent substance -- but I'm not yet convinced that it is completely harmless.
Anyone else feel they may have been mentally weakened by pot? - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10From first and second hand experience I can say that heavy habitual use is likely to affect you even when you aren't high, but try quitting for just a couple weeks or a month, I bet you'd be surprised how different you feel. The effects definitely go away faster and more noticably then they build up.
For me the most noticeably manifested effect is that I would transpose the first syllables of adjacent words while speaking. It was very rare but something that never happened until I was smoking heavily and went away when I stopped. - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I've smoked weed since I was eleven heavily since I was 20, but daily only since I was 23....I don't smoke nearly as much now due to new job involving heavy machinery and peoples lives.
- zeroduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The number of people here that smoke greatly exceeds the number of people here that have studied Quantum Physics. This should be no surprise.
- QuantumBios, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Smoked nearly every day for 15 years. It's somewhat exciting to see that the veil is being lifted off of peoples eyes. Not gloating, but how stupid will some people who were excessively anti-buds feel when more evidence of marijuanas positive effects are brought to light. The drug companies and the government have been in bed for years on this one. Keep pot illegal has brought one billions in medicine revenue, and the other billions in fines, as well as feeding people hard earned money into the "system" (lawyers, "treatment", counseling, etc)for the past 80 years. It may not be for everyone, rarely sanything is, but it is a gift of this earth, and those who can handle it responsibly, should be able to do so in peace. Peace out!
- greymaxcat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Yeah... but you are gonna die from something.... might as well be something that makes you happy...
