- geekchic, on 11/25/2007, -0/+24Following a serious illness some years ago, I suffer a very odd memory loss. The information was there, I was simply unable to access it.
In essence, I had a corrupted hard drive for a brain.
Every so often, something would be said or happen which would unlock part of that corrupted file - and I would stand still for a while wondering how I had managed to forget that.
The biggest was when trying to work out what I had done at work for the past year - and I was sure I had everything back until I saw an email and realised that I had forgotten what was probably the biggest project of my life - which took 9 months of hard work and involved flights to Seattle for meetings. It made me appreciate the value of a good memory.
I also appreciated the value of a good email archive as once I became aware that something was wrong with my memory - I was able to sit down and skim through some 5 years worth of emails to generate the "triggers" which would unlock the doors in my memory. If you are ever thinking of deleting old emails as "worthless" - just think what you are about to throw away! - cyberpope, on 11/25/2007, -1/+18Regularly back up your data. I do believe that's probably the simplest and most effective way to fight memory loss.
- lazyeyesam, on 11/25/2007, -6/+21#9 Not a popular one: Stop smoking pot.
- RawbCahn, on 11/25/2007, -0/+8Close Firefox every hour or so?
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+8I hope I don't forget these.
- StatiK69, on 11/25/2007, -0/+7I can totally agree with "use it or lose it". I'll make a snippet of code and not use it for a while, go back and totally forget how or why I created it. I can recommend a #9, mandatory vacations or #10, notepad with keywords.
Shoot, I must be getting old, I had to read that story twice :-( - joe8pack, on 11/25/2007, -0/+6google these key words "selegiline deprenyl memory" a truly remarkable chemical.
- geekchic, on 11/25/2007, -0/+5I think you need to aquire a sense of humour.
- Mako640, on 11/25/2007, -0/+5Fail of epic proportions.
- Amadeus2490, on 11/25/2007, -0/+5(Joke about not remembering this article)
- jbravo, on 11/25/2007, -6/+9I was going to comment on this story but I already forgot what it was about.
- postitnote, on 11/25/2007, -1/+4Kind of like the game, which I just lost.
- 1tb0y, on 11/25/2007, -2/+5In summary: Exercise your mind AND body, increase your antioxidants/omega-3 intake, don't be a lush, BOOZER, and avoid stress.
Also take your vitamins! Ginkgo biloba - Increases circulation to the brain. Provides memory enhancing effects, DHA - One of the omega-3 fatty acids essential for normal brain development and function, A vision support formula - Providing antioxidants, zinc, lutein and zeaxanthin. - meez, on 11/25/2007, -0/+3Once I forgot to backup my registry and I crashed at a party, took me a whole day to fix my system.
- Sabretou, on 11/25/2007, -0/+3Now this is hilarious.
- cp101, on 11/25/2007, -0/+2You ever exercise baked? I smoked a joint(or as it two?) and went on an hour long run. Not a jog, but a run. I run for about 20 minutes sober before I take a walk break, but this was a straight hour. It seems counterproductive to smoke and then run, but it was weird. The first five minutes sucked, and I had terrible coughing fits, but after that I felt invincible. Is it from the positive effect THC has on red blood cells? Because I may just start brewing tea for the body high even though it takes more of the ganj, godbless knowing growers.
- georgemason01, on 11/25/2007, -1/+3I'm going to keep smoking weed and also do the things listed in the article, to see if they can offset the affects of the weed. I will never stop smoking. Hail Cannabis.
- ithejosh, on 11/25/2007, -0/+2The article seemed way to much like advertising for me. Buried.
- RSS14, on 11/25/2007, -0/+2Remember Sammy Jankis.
- orp2000, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1Not bad advice, but go easy on the Gingko. It can lead to subdural hematoma, which can be quite a problem. Google it, you'll find it happens often enough.
- JordanTW90, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1Pencil and paper?
- thinkharderest, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1eight ways to fight memory loss.......if you can remember them after you read it.
- Amadeus2490, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Sure. . .there are things like chelation, oxygen therapy, AND eating a sensible diet/supplementing with vitamins, minerals etc. On the same ticket, you CANNOT take some pill -whether it's a synthetic drug, vitamin, mineral, gel, liquid etc - and become magically "cured." People turn to natural/alternative medicine and think it's some kind of fad or "get healthy quick!" scheme, but people fail to understand that it's a lifestyle change that can help to prevent, or encourage your body to heal itself rather than rely on drugs or surgery.
- dandonia, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1dont take it out of the computer ... DUH!
lol - ultrafez, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1Now we wouldn't want any memory leaks now would we.
- demonstro, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Ba-dum cha!
- misterhat, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15145917/
Anyways, I have no way substantiate this, but I'd bet more people forget things due to Alzhiemers than being stoned. - inactive, on 11/25/2007, -2/+3Back up your hard dome?
- lethalpotato, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1thanks. i lost too.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -1/+2Smoking cigarettes has been shown to help, oddly enough.

- opticwind, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1"Want to learn more about keeping you memory strong?"
They forgot the "r" in "your". - DeadRooster, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1Exercise and avoid alcohol? I'd rather be forgetful.
- sadenshi, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1For all who are interested, this is a very resourceful site I've just found, when I did a google on the book I am reading: "Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain" by Sharon Begley.
http://www.sharpbrains.com/ - bobcrotch, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1It's late in the game... but if you had any idea what disaster recovery was like if 500 people had over 2gb of email each you might change your mind. It's not really a matter of money but functionality.
Cfuse is partially right, I guess it just depends on how your IT management sticks up for policies though. - 9a3eedi, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1gah.. I thought this article would help me free up memory on my PC or something..
- Zenas, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1LOL
- Amadeus2490, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1What kind of work did he do? Was he exposed to any environmental toxins? Did he fight in any wars, smoke cigarettes, breathe paint fumes? Was he in any serious accidents, does he have any metal rods in his legs?? There are more possible factors than just diet.
- cfuse, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1I had a serious ear infection that nuked my short term memory, it took about 6 months to level back out. It's never been quite as good as it was since. Writing notes helps.
- Sepherade, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Now what was I going to write?
- cfuse, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Speaking as someone who has been responsible for these things, you get 200 and anyone who actually matters gets as much as they want.

More like: #9: START smoking pot. - RandomGuySteve, on 11/25/2007, -0/+0We don't have that luxury at my work. If it's that important, print it. If it's not, oh well.
200 Megs of space. 2.9 Billion a year in Profit and we get 200 megs each. - gudnbluts, on 11/26/2007, -0/+0I got as far as "avoid alcohol". The next line was probably something like "build a planet from your own mucus and populate it with 40-foot, sword-weilding, zombie bushbabies".
- SenorCoconut, on 11/26/2007, -0/+0Blatant advertising, but still gets a thumbs up for usefulness
- gudnbluts, on 11/26/2007, -0/+0Oh, and I love the list of alternative placebos at the end. You'd never guess what this site's trying to sell.
- leroyleroy, on 11/26/2007, -0/+0A study found that moderate alcohol use (1-2 drinks a day) improves, rather than harms, memory: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id ...
- gkiltz, on 11/26/2007, -0/+0There are 3 signs of old age, the first is memory loss, I forget the other two!
- kenbiz, on 11/25/2007, -1/+1a great advice and i would like to add "play strategic games" can also improve getting rid of memory loss
