- MrBone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22@Tankslap: It's not crap, doctors have studied sleeping habits and if you are an insomniac you are recommended NOT to read in bed. It's called building up your sleeping habits. The bed is for sleeping, period! OK, maybe one other activity if you have company ;)
Go to bed same time every night, if you can't sleep, get up, do something that tickles the brain a bit, try to sleep again later. And here's a kicker, even if you didn't sleep at all during the night, get up at the same time each morning. Make sleeping a habit.
And you should be carefull with exercising. If you don't rest you don't recuperate as well so tiring yourself with exercise to sleep can lead to a weakened body.
There's loads of thing one could do to ease the getting to sleep. Make sure your bedsheets are clean, that you have some fresh air in the bedroom, shower before going to sleep, don't eat too much, don't drink too much. Keep water by the bedside so you don't have to go far in case you wake up. Think "happy thoughts", don't lie in bed if you are worried, go do something else and get your head straightened out.
If anything was crap it was the article. I've had trouble sleeping for a few years now and I've heard a large amount of both bad and good advice. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19It's 5 AM and I'm still awake. mmm, internet+food...
It's not a disease. It's a lifestyle choice. - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I love that this gets front paged at 3AM. . . Not getting much sleep diggers?
- Tankslap, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19Sorry but that's crap. Reading in bed does not teach me to lay in bed awake. Reading while tired makes me sleepy. That usually leads to the book landing on my chest and the rest is history.
I also watch TV on my couch, and have no problem falling asleep on the same couch. I'm not a 3 month old baby, and don't get trained in the same simple manner. - adharris, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17The article recommends reading in bed. DON'T. If you read in bed you train your body that the bed is a place to lay awake. On the flip side if all you ever do is sleep in your bed you can train yourself to fall asleep quickly because your body knows it is supposed to fall asleep when its in bed. Furthermore, if you cant sleep after 15-20 minutes, get out of bed. Otherwise your body will be trained that the bed is a place to toss and turn. Reading is good to do before bed, just not in bed.
- Tourney3p0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10This article seems to have confused insomnia with staying up late/sleeping late, as evidenced by the "get up earlier" solution.
Insomnia isn't just an inability to fall asleep, though that is part of it. It's the inability to get an adequate amount of sleep, whether you're tired or not. Basically all three suggestions wouldn't help an insomnia sufferer at all, though it might help someone who simply has too much energy at night. - Beanbot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'd normally suggest a nip of the bottle...but being up at 4:30, I'd also be inclined to not listen to me.
- st0nes, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9It's not 3am everywhere.
- ButterBuddha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Cure Insomnia? stay away from digg.com...
- DarrenRadford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So the cure for insomnia is... get tired and go to bed! Whoa, radical!
- sarazen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I can add to this meditation. I am not a super dedicated practitioner, but I have found, especially on those nights when thoughts seem to be chasing themselves through my head like mice in a habitrail, that trying to focus on breathing and quiet the mind often knocks me out faster than a good hammer.
Red tea and a nice bath aren't bad either, especially if you have to miss a day of exercise, or are stiff from it. - mygrayarea, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"3. Go to bed."
That's a great ***** tip for an insomniac. - nicolaihel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8And don't drink caffeine or exercise late in the day. Develop a relaxing ritual.
- WoollyMittens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Summary:
1. Get tired
2. Sleep
*sigh* - Alimack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Exactly. Insomnia can often be waking up extremely early, whether you want to or not, and being unable to get back to sleep.
My dad used to get up early for work, and now he's retired he can't kick the habit. He wakes up completely at around 5 most mornings, sometimes as early as four on a bad day. He's occasionally managed a lie-in as late as seven o'clock! Lazy bastard. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Awesome tip! If your tired, go to bed! This article is CRAP.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I know the thing above looks like an ad, but he really is right. He picked that link from the first google result and you can even read the wiki on it if you'd like:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin - remccain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Want to beat insomnia?
Take melatonin about 15 minutes before you go to bed.
http://www.melatonin.com/
Cured me of 30 years of insomnia.
So why am I up now? The wife has the stomach flu.
Yea. - zakangelle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The term "insomnia" is thrown around pretty loosely.
- Boozo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4A sure cure for insomnia: "Go to bed." Now there's Zen genius for you!
- Pelapp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Why is st0nes getting dugg down?
He's right, Digg isn't just a place for americans longer,
although they're the majority.
It's the internet, it belongs to everyone. - Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Will melatonin enhance my sex life?
There is no evidence to support this claim as it relates to humans. However, a 1995 rodent study suggests that taking small amounts of melatonin on a regular basis may prevent the age-related decline in testosterone levels, allowing men to be more active sexually in their later years.
liar... - bronyraur777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All that I have written is a bad idea, sans the part about work.
It's 5:06 now... - search4trvth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Here's a sure cure for insomnia:
Listen to Al Gore talking for more than a minute. - thalassicus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3My mom told me about melatonin when I was in college, but I didn't listen to her because I feel like she thinks she can cure anything with some random "natural remedy" without any scientific basis.
A year ago, I started eliminating any bright lights in my house after 7pm (bright lights inhibit your natural production of melatonin), no caffeine after 3pm and taking sublingual melatonin tablets (they go under the tongue and directly into the bloodstream as opposed to a pill that must be swallowed and processed by the digestive tract) before bed and it absolutely worked for me. - eatsushi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3smoke pot.
- bronyraur777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Dugg...4:17am
Work...6:30am
Sleep...None
Ahhh, the life... - ffttoteof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Add my testimony to that. Melatonin worked for me. Despite it being available over-the-counter, and despite the filthy hippie that worked at the herbal store looking like a nimrod, I gave it a try and it really does work.
Note: If you take one and then keep going about your business, it won't knock you out. Take one and lie down and try to get to sleep. Where normally you'd still be lying there awake two hours later, with melatonin you'll be boarding the sleepy-time express to slumberland before long. At least, that was my experience. - fabriciom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3According to Freud all insomniacs have their roots in lack of sexual activity..
- acidity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Roll a fat joint and smoke it. There is no way on earth that you will not get sleep.
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the 1st one is here...

#5 Don't have a baby when you have a 3 year old!
(if you are solely concerned about sleep anyways!) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5@the early rising article
*****. That. - chaiwalla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2After years of insomnia, I just discovered melatonin. I get about 7 hours and do not feel groggy in the morning. Lots of exercise and a regular bedtime helps too.
- swordphish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Duh? Is common sense even worthy of Digg front page?
Here's my tips:
1) If you try to go to bed, and it takes longer than 5 mins to fall asleep, then you're not really tired.
2) Lay off the caffiene, obviously. Drinking a 2-liter of Dr. Pepper or Coke will keep you up for more than 24 hours at least.
3) Smoke a little pot - not so much that it literally knocks you out, but enough to where you can keep from dreading the next day.
TV, Digg, etc. isn't responsible for your insomnia. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2“Dawn: When men of reason go to bed.”
Ambrose Bierce - slapthemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anything in reverse case,......... where one sleeps early and gets up late.......
- sublimethinker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Gotta love good old Ambrose.
- nosworthy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent article.
If I ever really need to get to sleep I'll read it and it will send me off into a blissful, deep sleep with its dull obviousness. - thefaithful, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm glad they told us that. And here I've been driving my car to try and fall asleep.
- JusticeAK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Melatonin works great, plus extremely vivid dreams.
- sonaro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you want to be an early riser and have energy in the morning, do not eat too late. It's single handedly one of the most important things you can do for energy, other than exercise. In fact, you really want to go to bed empty, but if you must eat to kill the crave, try eating a salad or giant tomato with salt, mmm.
- EdwardsNH, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It all goes out the window when you get kids.
- Tankslap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2WTF is a nooner gonna do for me at 10pm?
- jacketdesplash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh so that's what I've been doing wrong- I'm supposed to be going to bed to get to sleep.
All those wasted nights!!
Who is this guy, is this perhaps the most obvious advice ever imparted? - ambushxx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2smoke pot
pot is the answer to everything - st0nes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Sex is alleged to knock males out, but it doesn't work that way for me. If we have sex at night, I'm wired as hell -- much better to bonk in the morning.
- duxwig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I've heard marijuana helps lull you to sleep pretty well also.
- bronyraur777, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14:51pm
