- googooly, on 05/09/2008, -10/+58"not be paid by insurance"
happy to be in Canada - Wollstonecraft, on 05/09/2008, -1/+41This country's broken insurance structure has got to be fixed. It's ridiculous that a service as important as health care is being run by companies who make money when services are NOT approved. It's really quite disgusting.
- Igei, on 05/09/2008, -2/+29What the hell is wrong with insurance companies? They are here to help us pay for medical bills, yet when the time comes and there are big bills to pay they just act like they don't know you. We need some one in charge that will do something about these thieves very soon.
- creepermclurker, on 05/09/2008, -3/+29You enjoy being a victim?
Don't believe everything you read.
And there are lines in America too, fanboy. - googooly, on 05/09/2008, -2/+26maybe that Wizard teacher can do something
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/09/2008, -1/+24insurance companies are in the business to make money first and help people second.
- jamesdew, on 05/09/2008, -2/+23at least there is care at the end of the line
- inigomntoya, on 05/09/2008, -0/+18The family has health care. The sad part is that the insurance company won't cover the tests.
- danlowlite, on 05/09/2008, -2/+20Are we sure it isn't lupus?
- NEWNHLISLAME, on 05/09/2008, -1/+19not to bash America, but here in Canada we are guaranteed medical help , no insurance company required to make a decision on your life. Free health care is terrible right?
- Sutherlord, on 05/09/2008, -0/+16It's NOT lupus!
- wasabimonster, on 05/09/2008, -0/+15Who is their Provider? We should find out and boycott those scumbags for not paying.
- RetlawST, on 05/09/2008, -9/+24Liberal hippy nonsense. If we start training them at a young age that the government will take care of them, they will never get jobs and become politicians.
/agree completely with you - mustafya, on 05/09/2008, -0/+14Stuff like this makes me so sad. I have a 10 month old baby boy at home and I do not know how I could cope if one of these terrible illnesses befell him. I will keep this child in my thoughts and prayers. If the link above is accurate I will donate money to them also.
- revjustin2, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13You enjoy paying premiums and co-pays and still having to shell out thousands of dollars for sub-standard care? In the US, it's cheaper to stay at a 4 star hotel than in a hospital (for basic room and board type services).
- ngmcs8203, on 05/09/2008, -2/+15Pablo, you've never been to an emergency room in the U.S. have you? Try having an appendix burst and going to a Kaiser E.R. 5hrs and you finally see a physician, then they evaluate you and set up surgery 2hrs later. Mmmm, health insurance... hard at work.
- feebie, on 05/09/2008, -1/+14Life threatening injuries/illnesses are first priorities in Canada. If your life is threatened, you don't have to wait.
If it is non-life threatening, you can wait. - Klinky, on 05/09/2008, -2/+14Oh yes, there are no lines in America! It doesn't take 60 - 90 days just to get a initial GI Consult, nor does it then take another month to actually get any procedures done to figure out what's wrong. God Bless America! Home of ***** health insurance AND terrible health care services...
Unless you're extremely wealthy, health care in the US is mediocre. If you're poor, unemployed or have a preexisting condition, good ***** luck getting any health care coverage at all. Time to pull out what little credit you have and roll over in your grave as you'll probably never have the ability to pay it all off - especially for something say as debilitating as cancer, lupus or many other crippling diseases.
Health care should not be a something for companies to profit off of. Everyone should get coverage. Health should be a right, not a privilege. Before you run off and say you don't want to pay for someone else's bypass after they've eaten fast food all their lives or you don't want to pay for abuses of the system or you think the government is slow, bloated & cumbersome. Guess what!? The same is true with our current health care system & on top of all those problems we also have blood sucking companies that actually gives employees bonuses for finding ways to terminate extremely ill and "costly" patients coverage or to diddle daddle on covering things they said they'd cover in their policy but later stall or make it extremely difficult to get approved. Even more alarming is that cheap insurance usually has huge deductibles($1K - $3K), so your first 5 - 10 doctors visits you'll probably have to pay IN FULL, say at about $150 - $250 a pop making many people apprehensive about even visiting the doctor, causing small problems to become bigger problems. One more thing to note is that many health plans do not include or have very poor dental & vision coverages, again making life harder.
Our system is definitely broken. It is not a beacon of excellence. It is pretty damn crappy when you look at it and when you see this girls story, it just shows how sinister and careless this system can be. Now her family has to ask the general public for assistance or go into debt themselves because their insurance that they paid for decided to do a cop-out. What's sad is that there are many stories like this that go by every day that we do not hear about. - banderwocky, on 05/09/2008, -2/+13Maybe Canada can help out this family, get them moved up here?
- RoroCo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+12If you change the 01 in your name, then you would still be an inappropriate douche...
- adrames, on 05/09/2008, -1/+11But once this story gets enough coverage, the insurance company will come in looking heroic with a big check to pay all her expenses.
- lordewoks, on 05/09/2008, -3/+13Ruin your Friday? What about her Friday?
- Octaman, on 05/09/2008, -3/+12I find it difficult to accept that their insurance company refuses to pay for the tests. Pretty sad for the family.
- mrsark, on 05/09/2008, -9/+18everybody should get free healthcare.
- massproductions, on 05/09/2008, -2/+11I feel bad for the little girl and her family, but did anyone else feel that it was a little weird that there was not a single interview with a doctor in that news piece?
- richbleak, on 05/09/2008, -1/+10It is situations like this that make me question the tenets of capitalism in all cases. We, as a society, have the resources to see that every person can be treated for every treatable ailment. The second we introduce the need for profits on these efforts and resources, things get a little bit problematic. Even the Canadian system is complicated by this fact. The Canadian system will pay for the supplies and procedures, but they are also paying for the profits associated with them.
I hate to take a anti-capitalist view of things, but I can't help but do so in matters of life-and-death. I would like to see a system in which people are reimbursed for the work they do to create equipment/perform procedures/do research, but the products and procedures themselves are delivered at cost. If paid a salary, the scientist will still research, the laborer will still labor, the administrator will still administrate, and the doctor will still treat; why do we need shareholders and executives collecting profits behind the scenes? We can do this better as a society and I think major overhauls are needed to do so. - enki25, on 05/09/2008, -2/+11It's never lupus!
- kmccormi, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9Though the whole story is so tragic, it warmed my heart to see her with almost a perpetual smile on her face in that video, and to see her young friends so willingly and helpfully spoonfeeding her.
- LogicBomB, on 05/09/2008, -2/+10The differences between House and a real hospital had me cracking up the other day. In House, a person comes in with a bad cough and is diagnosed with some rare disease feeding off another disease which is hiding symptoms and in the end all is well because of a quip someone says to remind House what it might be. In real life, you're given general antibiotics, if anything, and told to go home and rest. where you end up dead.
- Mageling, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8I have yet to see an American who likes the U.S. health care system so bash away, my friend.
- WilliamDavis, on 05/09/2008, -8/+16and a million dollars. And a spaceship ride. And a big giant house. Pretty much, everyone should get free everything. I expanded on your idea. Now you figure out how to do it.
- Octaman, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8I know most Americans believe the European system is some evil communist plot, but we do have private hospitals. You can choose the hospital / care you want, the private ones are just a bit more expensive. They cost something like $30 extra for a consult... big deal.
- jawdog, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7Just so you know. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Discovered in 1850. Lou Gehrig dies in 1939. It's the same thing that Stephen Hawking has.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -2/+9You forgot a pony. A freakin pony.
- madfrogurt, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7Do not confuse how things are for how things should be. Evolution isn't a morality, it's a way of describing how organisms change over time.
- CycloneTH, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8It's never Lupus.
- nutzngum, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7god bless her, despite her condition she seems to be in pretty good spirits...funny how kids are so little yet so strong. Hope they find a way to help her.
- Enasni1212, on 05/09/2008, -2/+9He's right, it can heal. It's called the placebo effect.
- PamalaLauren, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6Doesn't stop them from billing you though.
- themastersb, on 05/09/2008, -2/+8This looks like a job for House.
- wendelgee2, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6They are in the business of making money only. Doctors and hospitals are in the business of helping people.
- Alegoo92, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6Of course, one's a TV show that needs a proper plot- with intro, rising action, climax, etc.. the other is real life.
- MattFromSeattle, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Unfortunately, caring about people doesn't make money for the insurance companies - only screwing subscribers out of every cent does that.
- ahawks, on 05/09/2008, -2/+7My initial reaction is to say something harsh and mean to you.
But really, if I look past that, I'm just sad that your understanding of the world is that mangled. - wrillo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6I think this is one of the many tests listed that came out positive
- selavy, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5i'd say sarkoidosis ... it fits ... explain all the symptoms
- Klinky, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Well when you get some rare unknown disease, I hope you can pull up this post of yours so that you can then rest assured that your death from/non-treatment of said rare disease will ensure that your insurance company will increase their profits by 0.001% that year.
