- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29You know what's a fun game? Take 3 Excedrin PM's and see if you can whack off before you fall asleep. You always win, that's the best part about the game.
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Lol, it's 1:12 AM and I can't sleep so I went digging :P

- MusicalGenius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Last night I was on digg looking for stuff about insomnia cause it is killing my life. I may loose my job from it. I just bought a really nice bed, I go to bed earlier and wake up later and still no help. This is good timing.
- madmac625, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Digging all night, can't work? Researchers make progress on procrastination
- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5actually I'm almost exactly the same way. I just started taking adderall and since then i tend to get 1-2 hours one night and then 12-14 the next. Sometimes I just go straight for 2 days. this should wear off soon though.
- Bosiljevac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I do the same...but is it really healthy to do so. O and yes I'm very productive too....
*looks for more articles on digg* - BigKitty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@MusicalGenius,
There is always a time lag between a medical discovery and an effective treatment becoming available - often a considerable time lag. If you are not able to sleep and it is causing trouble in your life right now, you need to see a physician who specializes in sleep disorders.
Insomnia (either not getting to sleep, or not staying asleep, or both) is a sleep disorder. Not too long ago, there were "sleep centers" or "sleep labs" at university hospitals, but few other places. By now, at least in the US, you can find sleep specialists in most cities.
Hope this helps... - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I bet every single visitor of this site are insomniacs..
I'll take a gallon of this new drug kthxbye. - flygirl62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3DHCL works good for me *getting* to sleep... does nothing for *keeping* me asleep, though.
Getting to sleep has never been a problem... it's the waking at 3AM and being unable to get BACK to sleep that's always been my problem.
Doctor recently prescribed Temazapan and Rozerem and told me to try each --- not together, of course.
Both work... somewhat. IOW, my problem is not yet solved. And I am one of those that is less productive without a full night's sleep. - PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5just think of an island and play podcasts at the same time
- manova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you prevent the synthesis of orexin, you will have narcolepsy. That would be kind of a crappy drug...side effects include randomly falling asleep throughout the day, experiencing loss of muscle tone if you get excited, and brief episodes of total paralysis as you fall asleep or wake up. That is why they want to block orexin receptors, not block the creation of orexin.
I have doubts that drugs blocking the receptors will work. While human narcoleptics have a lack of orexin, narcoleptic dogs have a mutation in the orexin receptor, so it seems that blocking the receptor will cause side effects like this:

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I also suffer from insomnia. It doesn't bother me too much; I have ways around it e.g. instead of sleeping each 24 hr period, I go to sleep every 48 hrs, thus making it easier to sleep.
- Shenaniganz08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmm its about 5.30 in the morning (pac) I wonder if this could be considered Insomnia.
Either way someone really should do a study on "nightcaps" ( liquor)
Alright time to take of the contacts and get some sleep - spencewah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Screw curing insomnia, let's cure Sleep.
- diggdong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+250 mg of Diphenhydramine-Hydrochloride (Diphendramine HCI) works good for me. It's available on the shelve.
- pixogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I read somewhere that masturbating before going to bed can actually cause you to become more awake because of the extra endorphins.
- borsdy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@pixogen
That's only because of the stress you put on your arm, wait till the Japanese makes sex bots. - ciotog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've taken that after telling my doctor I didn't have a great time with either the stilnox or zopiclone. Didn't realise it was available over the counter - I must keep an eye out for it.
- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like many have said, lack of sleep is severely affecting my life. It really sucks to look at the clock and know that I have to be up for work in 2 hours and am nowhere near falling asleep. Which in turn makes it even harder for it to happen.
I've taken Melatonin in the past and it works, but I've found that it makes me feel almost hung over in the morning...which kind of defeats the purpose. I'm in enough of a fog without anything helping.
But hey, on the bright side...I get to enjoy the early morning on the weekends. I would never be up at that time otherwise. And my BF2142 score is through the roof. :) - bagwaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sleeping is for n00bz :-)
- BigKitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@madmac625,
That too...chores aren't getting done...oh, well... - teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same here, but I also started ripping DVDs at 2AM.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is why I don't like the medical sciences much. Very few researchers try to find the cause of something -- they just try to find the cure.
They're trying to find a way to block orexin. To hell with blocking it, find out what promotes its creation. Only by understanding the underlying processes behind the universe will you understand how to manipulate it. - kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same here. It's 1:37am and digging. Wanna come out and get a drink with me? :)
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It sounds too much like a form of LSD for me to take :)
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I sleep every 2nd night as well, It's not a problem it just means we're more productive.
- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i get all the sleep i need during my lectures
But nonetheless this is good news . - benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love that movie
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think conditioning works the best. The experts used to say (before the drug companies bought them off) don't do anything in bed other than sleep. Don't eat, don't read, don't watch TV. Have sex with the wife in the living room. Anyway, it seems to work for me even though I'm here right now. ;) I'll watch TV in the living room until I'm nice and drowsy, then crawl into bed. Five minutes later, I'm dead asleep.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm just holding out for that drug that is supposed to eliminate the need for sleep.
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1would've been better in a couple hours. (at least for NA-eastern time)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nah, sometimes you do everything right and you still can't sleep. Sleep Hygiene is, of course, important but constant and unremitting insomnia can't always be resolved by good sleep habits. I think everyone with persistent insomnia should see both their primary doc and a psychiatrist. If you have done what you can do in terms of good sleep habits and you're physically healthy then there may be underlying depression. That CAN'T be resolved by good sleep habits and medication may be the only route to decent sleep while you deal with the depression with a therapist.
- DavidTrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Diphenhydramine-Hydrochloride
Duane Rede sells it as Generic under the name Sleep Simply - DavidTrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1benijuana
how do you get that stuff @ adderall - HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heh.. i find myself browsing Digg at 3am every night lol
My name is Hso.. and I... an am addict :( - ToasTicLes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha tell me about it! I've tried so many different treatments for my insomnia and none sofar have the right effect without making me into a zombie during the day too! In the U.K, you can only be tried on so many different types of sleeping pill until they leave you no other option but to see a shrink or take anti-depressants! Thats the problem - I'm a happy go lucky guy the only thing that pisses me off IS my insomnia...
I still play a counter-strike mod called UWC3 - and I have to say that my insomnia keeps my skills pretty sharp too :P - manova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They still say this. The behavioral therapies for insomnia have been shown to have longer lasting positive effects than pills. Only use the bed for sleep and sex. Everything else, reading, TV, studying, eating, etc., do out of bed. Develop a routine that you do every night before you go to bed (it works for adults just like little kids) so your body knows your about to sleep. After you lay down, if you cannot fall asleep in 20 mins, get up and do something boring (start reading a text book) until you are sleepy. Don't fall asleep on the couch, make sure you go back to the bed. If you still can't fall asleep in 20 min, repeat. Keep doing this for several weeks and you will condition yourself that laying down on the bed equals sleep.
- BigKitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@manova,
You're right about blocking synthesis of orexin causing narcolepsy. You're also right about the dogs. (However, if CATS had narcolepsy, I doubt anybody would be able to tell the difference! LOL...) I think you only want to block the orexin receptors temporarily, just long enough to get some sleep.
BTW, a person with narcolepsy can also suffer from other sleep disorders at the same time, including waking up during the night. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a significant amount of research on alcohol and sleep. If I recall correctly small amounts of alcohol (like a glass of wine) can be beneficial to falling asleep but can potentially have a negative effect on the quality of sleep, and can aggravate some other sleep conditions such as sleep apnea.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your doc gave you temazepam for 3 AM wakings? I hope you don't have to be up until 11am because that drug has an 8-10 hour 1/2 life. Also, 3AM awakening is a pretty classic symptom of depression. Might be worth seeing a psychiatrist.
- chrismok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Prescription drug, used normally as an anti-psychotic, but doctors prescribe it for insomnia is Seroquel. The dose is
really small, and you will sleep and it actually is a very high quality sleep. See link below for some more info. 100mg
is a high dose. I've found that 25-50mg is enough to put you out for 8-10 hours.
Peace
