- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32wow! ancient news!
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Wow! Breaking! Say, I wonder if red wine is any good for you....
And what's this I've been hearing about antioxidants!?!? - hobbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19You know what is even better? Regular exercise. I see these commercials for drugs that say "when regular exercise just isn't enough, plavicorxeniful has you covered". Too bad most people think doing a 7 minute ab workout 2x a week is their "regular exercise". Get out there for an hour a day, 4x a week (plus more on the weekends), where your heart is throbbing, your lungs are pumping, your muscles are burning ... and I would bet that 90% of the people who say regular exercise is not enough wouldn't need blood pressure meds anymore. People are always looking for the quick fix excuse ... "oh, I guess I'll eat more chocolate and be all better".
Sheesh ... - knucklebusted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I will live forever! I eat enough chocolate to save three people!
- eviltuxking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This just in: heroin also lowers blood pressure! Stock up while you can, junkies!
- joshua5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7key phrase: "provided there is no total gain in calorie intake"
This falls on the same lines of "low fat" does not mean "eat the whole box" - Mindflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This just in: Lots of things lower your blood pressure.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Memo to America: REAL dark chocolate doesn't have any milk in it. ***** Hershey's is a joke...
- saladtossser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4inaccurate, the dark chocolate only stops your girlfriend's PMS, thus lowering stress levels in you and therefor lowering your blood pressure
- jgee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sure, but only if you eat only one small piece each day. Can you pull that off?
- grve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3cutting your veins open and bleeding dry lowers your blood pressure dramatically :)
- blake10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish the article pointed out WHAT KIND of tea they used. Green tea? White tea? Anybody know?
- NICU, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6You know if Imus said this there would be riots!
- Arnold22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good now I can add 10 bars of dark chocolate to my 3 bottles a day of red wine. Damn I'm healthy!
- rnwen2750, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder how I can get a group of fanboys to digg up every story I submit too!
- SgtCrispy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Been saying it for years.
Down with Milk Chocolate! - starguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Eating a lot of dark chocolate (or, for a matter of fact, any soft drink, which is loaded with sugar/high fructose corn syrup and caffeine) will put you on the FAST TRACK to becoming hypoglycemic, and then DIABETIC. Have fun feeling fatigued all the time, confused, tired, sleepy, depressed, hungry, and having to eat every hour, and getting fat around your midsection because your body can't take in all the sugar any more and your liver and pancreas are exhausted. You'll die a quick death and then you're blood pressure really will be low then. Your cells become insulin resistant, and sorbitol starts sticking to them which is an irreversible process.
To get off that hellhole addicting merry go round of sugar highs and crashes, switch to eating real food. Lots of meat, fresh leafy green vegtables, fresh water, and vitamins. You can eat all you want of that stuff, and if you stick to it exclusively, you'll feel a world much better.
Refined sugars and caffeine are serious poisons to the body. They may make you briefly more alert, but in the long run, they royally will destroy your health. Evolution never prepared our body to eat that much crap, and the sweet taste short circuit over rides the ability of our body to distinguish nutrious food from empty, fattening, junk. Most of the food which is sold in grocery stores is not food at all. Its a manufactured bunch of taste chemicals cranked out on a conveyor belt for profit, with plenty of sugar mixed in hook young kids at an early age, get them addicted to sweets at an early age, their health be damned. Corporate profit and survival always takes immediate precedent over customer health. If it doesn't kill them immediately, we can always blame it on something else and can't be held accountable. Shopping at a grocery store unless you are enlightened, is like walking through a toxic dump minefield. - Kurisuku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's what most fat people say...
- pktgumby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And next week it will be bad for you again....
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, I tend to buy 70-80% bars from Lindt or trader joes. Tried 99%, but it was just too bitter. It's good in tiny pieces though.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Typically chocolate has dairy and sweetener added to it. That's what's bad for you. That's what makes it candy. Dark chocolate is closer to produce than candy. Keep in mind, this is the stuff that you break off a single square of, and then can't bring yourself to have any more for a while.
- JimmyRyan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Welcome back to February everybody.. Hope you guys are ready for Valentines Day!
- sail191912, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the bitter aftertaste of Lindt. Try Meiji dark chocolate, not as bitter, but not sweet, like Hershey's.
- vokiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"according to a new survey of the medical literature by German researchers"...
What???!??!? According to German medical literature BEER cures everything also!
"We do not know exactly which are the active blood pressure-lowering ingredients in cocoa"
But this beer is pretty darn good!
BS study... I wouldn't drink to that or give funds for that. - KidSupreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dark chocolate has alot of saturated fat; 20-25% usually. Saturated fat is not healthy, and will increase the chances of you developing coronary heart disease.
The cocoa in dark chocolate is healthy, the saturated fat is not. The unhealthiness of the saturated fat pwn's the healthiness of the cocoa. Do not eat dark chocolate thinking it healthy, make yourself a low fat cocoa drink instead... - tedlove, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4great. this is the last thing i need...
- wush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, don't go super size on the scorpion.
- jonyuppie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am not anti-establishment or anti-chocolate, but I am sick of the media confusing the general public on what is healthy. Scientists and researchers do these obscure studies and the media gets a hold of their results and creates sensationalist articles from them. This chocolate bit is no exception. The worst part is there is somebody out there who is substituting their blood pressure medication with dark chocolate. How many diggs or readers would an article get if the headline was "Eat a moderate diet of lean meats, green vegetables and whole grains, combined with exercise for 3 times a week to lower blood pressure"? Let's not kid ourselves, the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume and the only way to lower blood pressure (naturally, at least) is to eat healthier and exercise. If you want to read more about food and health, I invite you to visit my web blog at http://yuppielifeguide.blogspot.com/index.html.
- WhiteIce89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Please digg me down some more for facts.
- uzibeatle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Caffeine is not a good thing to intake much if your diabetic or 'borderline' diabetic. Caffeine has a wonderous effect on the body as a stimulant but also
stimulates the release of sugars in the bloodstream. So if your a diet controlled diabetic that cup of joe can quite possibly do more harm than good.
I love coffee but have to watch it and not overdue it as I must control bloodsugar via diet and not enough exercise.
I love chocolate too but .. alas. - LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but caffeine can also be good for you
http://coffeefaq.com/site/node/7
It's also an ergogenic, letting you do things faster and concentrate better. Of course it still raises your blood pressure, but as long as you don't abuse it, you're good. - Charlatan22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In other news, it leads to a heightened (0.01%, but we won't say the actual number 'cause it ruins the story) chance of cancer. Stop eating immediately!
- tanto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chocolate also cures your migraine.
http://orangtuamurid.info/blog/?p=211 - theskunkworks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.popsci.com/popsci/science/2c94f56ba5e81110vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html Great article on misleading headlines.
- Linguino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+040% can be very good, 70% is usually too strong. The best tasting is also aerated. That way its very light and not strong at all, without having to use fillers.
- Gembow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here it from the horses mouths!
http://www.highbloodpressureinfo.org/chocolate-and-blood-pressure-reduction.html - Homerr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Unfortunately it gives me migraines.
- Hormelinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1pass the chocolate .. my prior comment was late and now I'm sad
- HyperJack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Everything is good for you....as long as its in moderation.
In other words....you can eat anything you want....just be careful how much of it you eat !! - fishy604, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Popular Science had a huge article on hyped stories and this was included, it's not the chocolate itself but something it contains, I think it said something about lettuce being pound for pound ten times better than you.
This subject is old anyway. - trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I detest it when people say that chocolate is good for you. It's not that good for you, I bet that if we did a study on a bunch of crap foods that we would find a lot of them hold some value.
Twinkies? They have to have a vitamin or two in them.
Ice Cream? Can we say CALCIUM!?!
Beer? Alcohol is good for you right?
Cigarettes? They do calm me down
72oz Steak? Iron and protein are good for you
I get the whole "moderation" thing, but why bother having one chocolate with 100 calories in it when you can have a cup of tea with antioxidants in it for 0 calories? - phlamingtoad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Forget the large amount of fat and calories. It lowers your blood pressure!
- hockeysmurf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is awesome news, because right now I'm eating a giant chocalate Easter bunny. Seriously, my mom gave it to me for Easter :)
- Hormelinator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1not if you are Imus
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"It's not that good for you"
Everything IS bad for you: you will die in a maximun of 100-110 years no matter what you eat. So...add PLEASURE to your equations!
I prefer the pleasure, the calories, go play tennis/running, burning said calories, live a pleasant life enjoying food and having a good condition rather than count and measure everything I take, eating aliments that I don't enjoy and becoming mad about diets and weight. - Homerr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1 ..
- kingofthegreens, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What else is made from the leaves of the coco plant?
- FattJesus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Dark chocolate is also ***** gross.
- captaincoconut, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Blood pressure isnt even that important. Buried.
