- davidcg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+212My guess it has nothing to do with the implant itself, but that fact they "decided they needed" the implant to fix an insecurity and got one is the reason they ALL have a link of more likely to commit suicide.
- shcheesman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+99This is not even news. This study is purely correlational and should not be taken as "breast implants cause suicide." Likely, more woman with breast implants have insecurities and deeply-rooted issues which may certainly cause them to change their body in the first place and there is likely a higher percentage of these people than others that do end up comitting suicide, but it is ridiculous to say that is because of the surgery that they do.
This is like saying that attending hospitals leads to people dying at a young age, because a large percentage of people who die young have been to a hospital. - tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -3/+85Pic of an implant but no breast; to save a lot of people time.
- Ninh, on 10/10/2007, -7/+47Dead people 33% less likely to breathe than living, study reveals
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29I bet less of them drown though....
- btgoss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19That is the shame of modern plastic surgery. It was developed for good, and now it's all about giant tomatoes.
- baalzebub, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20i know a women that had breast implants and they look so obviously fake it is ridiculous...
i think womens breasts look much better natural, i dont care if they are big or little bitty titties, or if gravity was not nice to them and made them sag a little ( I still like and appreciate them), natural is better and much more healthier... - Ventolin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19"I'm all for women who decide to get plastic surgery. It allows you the rare oppurtunity to have your outer appearance resemble your inner appearance. Fake. And that's a positive message for women unless you have fake ***** then let's be honest, you're not bright enough to get that joke. Keep telling yourself you did it to make your shirts fit better; you did it because you're a whore."
"I dont wanna develop a personality so just cut my face. There, now I'm happy, or at least I look like it."
-Daniel Tosh - tacroy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18I really hope so. My wifes family has a history of breast cancer, yup some people that get breast implants arent doing it because they are whores: they do it so people don't point and laugh at them for surviving cancer and dealing with its penalty.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I've actually read most of the papers on this and there is a mild correlation and possible causation between red wine and heart disease. The correlation(once all other factors are equated for) is not as overblown as the media has reported but the data does support the conclusion that red wine does seem to be cardioprotective.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Plastic surgery is just like a patch to a much deeper seeded problem. Many times suicide is another outlet for such problems, its a sea-saw balancing act.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13why the hell is he getting dugg down? It makes sense to me.

Correlation Does Not Imply Causality - BLyn, on 10/10/2007, -7/+16Okay... well it gives the women less reason to live... but it gives men more of a reason not to commit suicide. Looks even?
- catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8RTFA, that was the conclusion they came to. The purpose of the study is to inform plastic surgeons that they may want to monitor the mental health of breast implant patients.
- thepxc, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13God bless your wife.
- eggloaf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I'm adopted. I win.
- frigginchris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8damn! those corpses are stacked!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Men tend to be many more times successful at suicide. Women use pills. Men use shotguns.
- anthropocentric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yes, exactly. "Don't confuse correlation with causation."
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Would it be considered whorish if they still took the opportunity to move up a cup size? I mean, you might as well.
- gthyb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Low self-esteem and self worth is linked to suicide. Not breast implants.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Unfortunately there is no such study to support your claim yet. It does make sense and I love tea but there is no such evidence.
- neuromute, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8For the time period, a lot more high risk lifestyles are involved here (dancers, prostitutes, etc.). They were early adopters for economic reasons.
As plastic surgery becomes normalized (like it has recently) you should see these results mirror more closely the population at large. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This study looked at COSMETIC breast implants.
- Neovos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's the antioxidant content from the grapes. A certain vineyard in France that escapes me is known to have the highest amount in it's wine and thus is the best for the heart. I'm a big fan of white tea as well which has the highest antioxidant content of the Chinese teas.
- profOblivion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"Correlation does not equal causation." I tend to repeat that as a sort of mantra when I read these types of studies.
- stephernator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Just one more reason for me to not let someone slice into my boobs and shove a saline filled sack into them. Not that I needed one in the first place.
- coollettuce, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Same with red wine, red wine doesn't help with the heart. The lifestyle of people that drink red wine is usually more privileged and thus they exercise more, have better health care, eat better, and have less stress.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dude, Shane, just shut up.
- brainScan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That's a great guess davidcg, especially given that it was printed right in the article!!!
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I call *****. Sweden women were used in the study. Sweden has always had a high suicide rate. The question is are they comparing the number of suicides to just Swedish women or all women?
- stephernator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3er, I meant that I have a healthy body image and I like the way I look, not that I necessarily have huge titties.
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Maybe if people would stop STARING at them and maybe MASSAGE them a little more, they wouldn't be so uptight.
- superbad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's even mentioned in the ARTICLE. But of course everyone read that already.
"Lipworth said she believes that some women who get implants may have psychiatric problems to start with, perhaps linked with lower self-esteem or body image disorders." - TsuruchiBrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sadly the kind of "logic" used here seems trivial to most people. I can't even remember the number of times I had to explain to college educated people the difference between correlation and causality. There are even a few who insist that the scientific method is easily trumped by "common sense". I am starting to wonder whether the general intelligence level of society is causing "common sense" to be a bad thing.
- Smight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Considering that even at being three times as likely to commit suicide they are still only 75% as likely to commit suicide as men, it's a pretty good trade.
suicides - women:men 1:4 - geuisteses, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Thats just a sad, sad waste of good breasts (and lives).
- Unlgued, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That's a big Dig for you, Dave. While xiliquiern's interpretation could be 100% accurate, statistics != science.
- canUdi9it, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Saline is salt water. It's essential for life and found in everyone's bloodstream. Silicone, is not. I agree with the OP. It's more likely the underlying fears and insecurities that led to the augmentation, rather than the implants themselves that are correlated. Then again I'm not a shrink.
- Tempest811, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Because nowhere in the article does it say what he quoted: "breast implants cause suicide". He made it up from his own assumptions of what the article was implying.
- canUdi9it, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I see lots of umbrellas every time it rains. Therefore umbrellas cause it to rain.
- dmoney22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I, for one, appreciate all kinds of boobz.
- blaaguuu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Except for moobs...
- redfox2600, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If your survived cancer you deserve the right to be able tell the doctor just add a bit more saline.
People in stat it called correlation not causation. - gregdigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Neovos' comment was brought to you by the wine and Chinese tea association.
- dmoney22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2*Daniel Tosh = King.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My guess would be reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy... the kind being discussed in the series of posts to which you are responding.
- Jorlwind, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I have to agree with you Baalzebub. Women need to remember that, "Even if they're small, we're still happily looking"
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I would digg that comment up 1000 times if I could.
