- hollywoodphony, on 11/21/2008, -1/+10I actually had one really bad eye and I totally experienced that. And then when it was fixed and I could suddenly see better than the other one out of it, it made me dizzy all the time while my brain figured things out.
- Relleum, on 08/17/2009, -0/+7The stock market is bringing 1997 back, so why can't I?
- Jsmuli2, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Careful sjmueller, I made a joke about diggers not getting girls last week and apparently I offended some people (even though I included myself) because, well, they have nothing else better to do....
- DiscoLando, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Mack? Is it 1997 again?
- Jsmuli2, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Considering humanity has shown nothing but devolution in their actions, I'd say, yes....yes it is...
- spikewilbury, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Return of the mack?
- asgardshill, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4I've been thinking about getting Lasik done for years, but I keep reading stories like yours and have no reason to disbelieve them. I'm most afraid of the "starring" effect that many victims, er, patients report when they look at light sources at night. I'm an amateur astronomer and it would really suck to lose my night vision or have it so degraded that it became worthless.
So until they come up with a way to make Lasik completely safe and reversible, I'll continue to stick with the soda bottles mounted on a frame over my eyes (I can't wear contacts either - I'm allergic to the plastic in them). Yes they're heavy and make me look like a dork, but they do work. - kyoorius, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3I can personally vouch that it is true, the brain will use another focused part of the eye to reconstruct a useful image.
My vision was ruined by a Lasik operation a few years ago. The diagnosis by a local expert doctor was that my cornea had macro striae. The eyes, instead of being a smooth curved lens are now more like a wavy shower curtain. I am not able to focus on any object in the center of vision, however I can strain to create a small focused area off center which moves and scans the page to build a useful image.
I created a few gif's which accurately depict what my vision is like:

I am able to see sharply, the problem is that I see many "sharp" images all superimposed over each other and that makes it very difficult to read words. Lasik candidates - think it through and do your research before you decide go under the laser! - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4 The brain is constantly reorganizing for your entire life. When are doctors and scientists going to stop being surprised by this.
- athomasUF, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3That's a problem with the cones (retinal receptors), not the brain. If there's no way to get the input, there brain can't do much to compensate.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2I like how your Google ads advertise Lasik.
- Athlyn, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2The human brain is truly a wonder--like a super computer working in the background.
- speedk0re, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2mods must have adjusted it... it originally said "Brian reorganizes to adjust for loss of vision". I didn't RTFA and figured it was one of those things that showed how your brain will automatically correct slightly misspelled words you jesus chris i'm done with this sentence.
- zoydberg, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2haven't you seen the guy that can see with his tongue
http://discovermagazine.com/2008/jul/23-the-blind- ... - nullcodes, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1It can automatically reorganize like that? Yeah, I guess it does make sense to me. Actually, sometimes it's as though my mind takes on a life of it's own.
- UselessTrivia, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1So is that sort of like a "ant + magnifying glass" effect? Too many years under the lens causes the middle of the retina to go bad?
- Observant1, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1the brain does it for spot blindness for seeing stuff like arc welding flash and most people dont realize they see anything differently at all. it isnt really new information but it is interesting, dugg.
- emt1451, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1wtf are you talking about?
- offrdbandit, on 11/21/2008, -2/+3To hell with Georgia.
- SisyphusFragmnt, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2your name should be Huangasm.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1very well said...if the end part is not capable of sending electric signals, then brain can't do anything about it.
- Huangism, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1screw u babyman senoir and your youngs
- wlfldy, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1So, you see like a fly? ;-)
- speedk0re, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1i thought this was going to be some family guy *****. Clever title though (assuming you did that on purpose)
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+0does this go for the same for color blindness? :s
- MarineDigg80, on 11/21/2008, -1/+0So people with eye injuries are just wasting precious eye and brain function? sucks for them lol
- roctimo, on 11/21/2008, -3/+2This article is going to suffer from Diggular Degeneration. Buried.
- Relleum, on 08/17/2009, -7/+2All digg users suffer from macular degeneration, but it's the variant that degenerates one's ability to mack to a girl.
- DaftMonk, on 11/21/2008, -7/+1The brain can do it all by it's lonesome? NOICE.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -9/+1Woo.. SRSLY?
