- Alheithinn, on 01/20/2009, -15/+1126They should take her nursing license away and ban her from the medical profession. It's not her place to play moral adviser. It's her place to care for patience and violating their rights isn't part of the package.
- LeftieLucy, on 01/20/2009, -8/+597If you are ethically opposed to IUDs, then is it really too much to ask that you just don't see patients that need an IUD adjustment? Like, could you just maybe refer them to a colleague or something? Gawd.
- freedomjoe, on 01/20/2009, -14/+325and Bush just gave these people the right to refuse any care that is morally objectionable to them....shouldn't they tell the patient first?
How arrogant, presumptuous and typical.
THANKS BUT NO THANKS for that IUD removal to nowhere. - Equinamin, on 01/20/2009, -2/+279Medical Negligence. Period. Plain and Simple. She should have her arse' kicked for many breaches of Nursing Ethical Codes. So much preaching at the bedside...come on!
- novenator, on 01/20/2009, -1/+249Holy medical malpractice batman!
- MiddleAmerica, on 01/20/2009, -4/+238Sue her ***** ass!
People can not get away with this kind of stuff.
This is a great example of a good lawsuit to set a precedent.
If she wants to make a difference she should study how our democratic republic works & decide how she wants to support her belief. But, taking illegal medical action on a trusting patient is extremely wrong in so many ways. - ironhide, on 01/20/2009, -2/+202So what happens if you get a pediatrician who doesn't believe in vaccines? A surgeon who is opposed to transplants? Chemo? Radiation?
- theexitwound, on 01/20/2009, -3/+195This is the same idea that got WalMart into trouble when the pharmacist on duty refused to sell contraceptive due to 'religious' matters.
- ironhide, on 01/20/2009, -7/+187Waiting for the wingnuts to sound off, I can't wait to hear their justification for this considering that this has nothing to do with a fetus.
- andrew522, on 01/20/2009, -7/+159*patients
(but I agree with your message) - inactive, on 01/20/2009, -1/+152Republican Here.
That nurse should be fired, sued, and criminally charged. - inactive, on 01/20/2009, -2/+117I am against abortion but I HAVE NO PROBLEM with birth control devices.
I think there is a thick line between believing something and making decisions for others. - LeftieLucy, on 01/20/2009, -6/+111There's a good analysis of this situation here:
http://digg.com/politics/AntiContraception_NurseTa ...
They tie this to the new Bush "Provider Conscience Rule," and point out that this sort of thing could continue if this rule isn't overturned. - apastafarian, on 01/20/2009, -1/+103And she was fired....right?
- ryrocker, on 01/20/2009, -1/+96IUD stands for Internal Uterus Droid.
it swim around a woman's uterus and shoots your sperm with a tiny laser canon... - Hetman, on 01/20/2009, -5/+99The right wing christians are just beyond my understanding. It is like this. The more you try to stop birth control the more abortions we will see. The more you try to preach abstiniance instead of informing people on birth control and safe sex, the more abortions we will see. It is like you are actively trying to create as many abortions as you possible can.
- ironhide, on 01/20/2009, -1/+93My wife raised a point - what if the woman would be in danger from getting pregnant?
- EmiliaGarcia, on 01/20/2009, -0/+90" "Defendant Olona stated, 'Everyone in the office always laughs and tells me I pull these out on purpose because I am against them, but it's not true, they accidentally come out when I tug.' "
It's happened more than once? What an idiot. - SheilaNoya, on 01/20/2009, -6/+92This is a slippery slope that Bush started by allowing this crap.
If medical professionals are allowed to determine our medical treatment based on their religious beliefs, then we have the right to DEMAND they disclose their religious beliefs prior to letting them diagnose and/or treat patients.
It seems like Bush's actions just turned this into a big can of worms for both sides. - Ishiguro, on 01/20/2009, -5/+91I'm very much against abortion, but this is ridiculous.
- thepoliticalcat, on 01/20/2009, -1/+84Let's hope the lawsuit is decided FOR the plaintiff and the judgement runs into more money than this bitch will ever be able to get her nasty hands on.
- TheXuu, on 01/20/2009, -0/+74that or have her go into surgery by a Jehovah's Witness who denies her blood transfusions. Or a Scientologist who denies her access to medications prescribed by trained psychologists.
"Freedom of Religion" includes freedom from the dictates of other religions. - ZeroCubed, on 01/20/2009, -5/+76"If men were equally at risk from this condition - if they knew their bellies might swell as if they were suffering from end-stage cirrhosis, that they would have to go nearly a year without a stiff drink, a cigarette, or even an aspirin, that they would be subject to fainting spells and unable to fight their way onto commuter trains - then I am sure that pregnancy would be classified as a sexually transmitted disease and abortions would be no more controversial than emergency appendectomies "
-Barbara Ehrenreich
Not that kids are a bad thing, but just as one might not be ready or willing to have a puppy that will cause a mess, keep you awake for a while, and drool, so am I not ready or willing to have a child just yet (especially if they drool). And abstinence be damned, I'd like to see you go for a couple years without some kind of relief. Explode you will. - inactive, on 01/20/2009, -0/+70You guys are aware I was satirizing the point of view of nuts like this nurse, right? I'm not saying it's remotely sane or anything.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -1/+66Next time she goes to the dentist perhaps he will forgo the Novocaine and lecture her on the virtue of not judging others and not being a preachy bitch.
- 7m7uf, on 01/20/2009, -0/+61If you have a problem with doing your job, maybe you should go look for another one.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -0/+59That nurse should be stripped of her license.
- AyaJulia, on 01/20/2009, -4/+61To play devil's advocate for a moment, stupid as I think the position is.... If you believe that life begins at the instant of conception, then an IUD CAN be considered abortion. It doesn't do its job by preventing fertilization, but rather by preventing fertilized eggs from implanting.
Of course, to hold this position and not be a hypocrite, you'd have to mourn every period as a potential miscarriage... it's estimated that almost half of pregnancies end in miscarriage without the woman ever having known she was pregnant due to failed implantation. - bushout, on 01/20/2009, -0/+57I think macweirdo42 was being sarctastic!
- Ender008, on 01/20/2009, -2/+59Dugg for being reasonable.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -20/+76Then she shouldn't be having sex. Married? Doesn't matter - sex for non-procreational purposes is a sin anyway. Raped? Well then it's the Lord's will, and no one should interfere.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -0/+56And of course then there's Mary, who proved that even abstinence-only isn't 100% effective.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -0/+51Nice. Trample on someone else's ethical beliefs to spout your own...while getting paid for it. I'd fire her in a heartbeat. Freakin' nutjob.
- imikedaman, on 01/20/2009, -0/+50Makes you wonder how they got the job in the first place.
- copypastry, on 01/20/2009, -5/+54You know there's a recession on when people are not only tightening their purse strings, but also their IUD strings.
- EdgarVerona, on 01/20/2009, -0/+49No, this is even worse than that. This was the *removal* of a prior procedure (as opposed to merely refusing to assist), and an unrequested lecture on top of that.
- cfuse, on 01/20/2009, -1/+50No, they should take her ovaries away - and she can see how if feels to have someone else make decisions about her ability to reproduce. ***** bitch.
- w09p, on 01/20/2009, -3/+49The nurse's ethics should play no role in that. She has a job to do and if she can't do it, she's in the wrong profession. She shouldn't get to turn anyone away due to her personal retardation.
- atgmac, on 01/20/2009, -0/+46You accidentally your grammar?
- RandomNetUser, on 01/20/2009, -6/+50Isn't an anti-abortionist taking an IUD out kinda like an anti-violence/war protester handing out automatic weapons? They're not necessarily going to do the thing you're opposed to, but you just made it a helluva lot easier for them to get there.
- redcolumbine, on 01/20/2009, -6/+49This highlights the hypocrisy of the religious right's opposition to abortion - it's more accurately described as opposition to allowing women to not GET pregnant. Any reduction of women's chances to become pregnant and stay relegated to incubator status is against their (completely un-Christian) social goals.
- AyaJulia, on 01/20/2009, -0/+42I hope that nurse's ideals are worth that much money to her.... -.-;;
-Cost of appointment, if the patient paid, which I wouldn't have
-Lost wages from the appointment that didn't solve the patient's problem
-Cost of a new IUD--depending on what kind she had, this can be up to $400
-Lost wages from new appointment to get new IUD put in
-Lost wages from time taken off work after getting new IUD put in (it hurts, I have one)
-Cost of pain medication and antibiotics needed after having new IUD put in
-Could make a case for mental hardship compensation due to the pain for a few days after and irregular periods for a few MONTHS after
-Court costs
-Lost wages due to time in court
....Yeah, I'm not sure any stance I have on any issue would be worth that much. - EdgarVerona, on 01/20/2009, -1/+42Past patients and character witnesses are heresay, and utterly irrelevant.
- roctimo, on 01/20/2009, -0/+41I think there's also a thick line between birth control and abortion. Responsible birth control practice can = less abortions. I'm pro-choice, but do I think abortions should be handed out like hot cakes? Hell no. Do I believe they should be available, especially for emergency cases? Yes. Do I now want some hot cakes because I've suddenly become hungry? You bet.
- diggmedownmore, on 01/20/2009, -2/+42You know, that's not the only thing... IUDs are expensive!
- EdgarVerona, on 01/20/2009, -1/+41Indeed, I agree. That was utterly irresponsible and stupid of her.
- deadmoo, on 01/20/2009, -1/+41What the hell does being anti-abortion have to do with an IUD? She is a nurse. Shouldn't she know the difference?
- Typhoon2009, on 01/20/2009, -0/+39This is one of those times where I don't mind multi-million dollar malpractice lawsuits.
- jawshoeuh, on 01/20/2009, -0/+39Thank you, Lord, for your will, I openly accept this baby into my life and will raise it happily in spite of the fact that it was the product of a brutal gang rape. What better way to follow this rape than 9 months of pregnancy and a excruciatingly painful birth? No, no, you're right, you know best, Lord, thank you for this.
- ybnormalman, on 01/20/2009, -0/+39That would work with most clear-thinking individuals. However, from my experience with hardcore Presbyterians, she was probably of the opinion that she was doing her righteous duty by correcting this woman's poor moral choice for her. Referring her to a colleague would rob her of the opportunity to "save" this woman from herself.
