- Ninh, on 09/04/2008, -0/+27That vastly overestimates the percentage of people who think while they work.
- ironeus, on 09/04/2008, -2/+23Thinking of a comment is making me hungry.
- NJPinstripes, on 09/04/2008, -1/+15Guess this explains why I'm so thin...
- bloodrave, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10Considering that obesity is a much larger problem in lower socioeconomic classes whose jobs are generally not considered "intellectually stimulating," I feel that attributing the obesity epidemic to intellectual stimulation, even in part, is ill founded and a shot in the dark. Like Tiak said, the brain runs almost purely off glucose, and a large amount of glucose at that. Eating more after intense intellectual exercise isn't necessarily "overcompensation," just like wanting to eat or drink more after running two miles isn't overcompensation.
- brainnovate, on 09/04/2008, -0/+8I already knew this.
- Tiak, on 09/05/2008, -1/+8The brain burns up ludicous amounts of energy (20% of usage on average), and it seems natural to me that it would send signals to increase Calorie intake rather readily, so overcompensation isn't particularly surprising.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6Me and my gut knew this. Call it a gut instinct.
- unhg, on 09/05/2008, -2/+8Food for thought.
- jmpeagle, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6so I guess Americans are super-intellectual?
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5FYI, The rate of obesity in China has increased by 97% in 10 years.
- D3koy, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4I don't think so... Look at so many of the past great thinkers, skinny as *****. Was it Edison or Einstein that would often get so absorbed in his work that he would forget to eat...
- quasipolymath, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Einstein developed stomach problems exacerbated by an aortic aneurysm. He was plagued by abdominal pain for most of his later life.
- sryan8913, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3I do that sometimes..
- DforSpiD, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2That comment is actually cooler now that the original has been deleted
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3There are definitely other factors at work in regards to obesity. The less educated aka the poor have some pretty horrendous diets.
However, I'm not one to dismiss the findings of this research. It could one of the very credible causes for being overweight. It might even explain why microsofties and other techheads are often fatties. - jcorn1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Is that why I felt so hungry after I read the article?
- PJOnori, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3Sweet. This is now my officially my excuse.
- duggdowncatisad, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2How come Obama is so thin?
- ImperialSoren, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3why only 14 in the study? doesn't really mean anything with such a small sample
- iticu, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2She doesn't eat in the first place.
- FulcrumVitesse, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Good point.
- Bith8654, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2And McCain so fat?
- Stevethegreat, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2If there's anything that differentiates us from the rest of nature is our intellect NOT our bodies. It's obvious that our bodies have been left behind, they're designed to survive in the African Savannah yet we're far away from there, both spatially and semantically. Those who resist the scientific modification of our bodies from the Savannah paradigm (slower fat intake by the body and muscle growth in demand, w/t the need of the robotic moves that once were saving our asses but now are a burden) are idiots. A life that it is not used to live as a human but instead (to live) as a lab rat (controlled intellect and/or constant body refinement) is a life not worth living.....
- Benjaphil, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2This is pretty much bogus. It seems to me that "intellectual work" is being completely generalized.
Now, maybe if they mentioned the fact that none of these intellectual activities appear to be all that enjoyable - quite the opposite, entirely tedious - I might be more inclined to take this study seriously.
Having people (over)compensate with an enjoyable activity as a result of an excessive tedious activities is not all that earth shattering.
Depressive realism my friends, depressive realism. - bliz, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I'm not fat! I'm just smart?
- chooter, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Maybe it's just mindlessly eating snacks in front of computer...?
- wheresmclean, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2Think yourself think with the new Chuck Norris sponsored Mindflex home gym?
- mr5150, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I can assure you that gargantuan obese individuals do not equate to intellectuals unless how to tackle that next burger and fries constitutes intellectual thought....shisshhh
- adrenalmedulla9, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Oh... right. Time to look down and say no more.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1sandaboy's post asked "then why aren't Asian people fat?"
- Bith8654, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1No, unfortunately doing "intellectual work" doesn't necessarily make you intellectual.
- quasipolymath, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I agree. That does seem like a very small sample size and a rather tiny demographic slice to make any generalizations about the population, which this summary seems eager to map the results on to.
Also, here's a confound: The subjects are freaking college students being given free food. Has anyone seen the spontaneous free food intake of students even when that intake is NOT preceeded by an intellectual task? Ever been to a student organization meeting where they serve pizza? It's nauseating.
That said, I'd like to read the article. Psychosomatic Medicine is a pretty reputable journal, from my understanding, so there has to be something there. - alapoet, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2I'll read the article, honest. I just need a little snack first.
- snilbert, on 09/05/2008, -1/+214 people is hardly significant.
- noseeme, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3Then explain Japan. Yeah, that's what I thought.
- Benjaphil, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1oh - but don't worry guys, we've figured out the obesity epidemic.
I mean, I was eating as I wrote this (but it's about that time). - scalded, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I know people that skip meals or cut them short because they're still working on a problem and they don't want to get distracted. Does that mean "intellectual work" can induce both anorexia and excessive calorie intake?
- noseeme, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Oh, that's cute.
- cheeseplease, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1It kind of surprises me as there is a negative correlation between obesity and intelligence.
- SlavaKM, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0Zing!
- AmericanParty, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1well no *****, stress causes people to eat. I could have NEVER guessed that.
- coastiefish, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0Did they take into consideration the subjects weight/BMI? Muscle burns more calories than fat. And age? The older, the slower metabolism is. Im either, not impressed with the lack of information in this article, or too lazy to find and read the issue of Psychosomatic Medicine.
- AllINeed, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1shows who actually uses their brain and who doesn't :)
- frosted, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0Yeah, all fat people are really smart.
- adrenalmedulla9, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1The real question is, why did they *admit* to using only 14 in the study? I mean, Fox News usually skips the whole 'number of subjects tested' detail entirely. A shameless act by these scientists, I'd say!
- Bith8654, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1Nope, it was the weed.
- WoollyMittens, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1All the more reason to continue the trend of dumbing down society.
- JFitzpatrick, on 09/05/2008, -1/+0That doesn't explain why the morlocks I see lumbering about are so obese.
