- one504, on 06/21/2009, -2/+96That's ironic, because it's also a common factor in conception.
- Winkleman, on 06/20/2009, -2/+57I wonder what the ratio is for suicides by those taking antidepresants.
- teknomaker18, on 06/21/2009, -5/+45Marijuana a common factor in preventing suicides.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 06/21/2009, -4/+43Correlation =/= causation. More likely suicidal people get drunk before they kill themselves rather than a high suicide rate among drunks.
- SEN5241, on 06/21/2009, -2/+36Seems like a no-brainer. How else do you expect someone to have the courage to follow through.
- thegrantman, on 06/21/2009, -1/+28Conception causes depression.
- Nattybumpoe, on 06/21/2009, -3/+29No, not bad science, bad interpretation of the data by you. They aren't saying that it CAUSES suicide (notice the use of the word "factor"); here is what the article says:
"It leads to disinhibition, and it can enhance feelings of hopelessness and depression. Alcohol impairs judgment and can lead to much more impulsive behavior. . . . The younger the individual, no matter what ethnic group, the more impulsive the suicide is, and the more impulsive the suicide is, the more likely alcohol is a major factor or trigger."
It doesn't say that drinking causes suicides, but people inclined to having suicidal tendencies will have a greater risk of suicidal behavior when drunk. This isn't a cause and effect argument, this is someone (zoom1928) who likely didn't read the story, and wanted to get dugg up for being the "antiscience" blowhard. Read the story, not the caption before commenting. - zoom1928, on 06/21/2009, -19/+45More bad science. They didn't show that alcohol caused it. The people could have been drinking because they were depressed rather than the alcohol causing the depression.
- tmyprod, on 06/21/2009, -1/+23This means 3 out of 4 suicides were desperate enough to do it sober.
- GeNe07, on 06/21/2009, -1/+19marijuana is my anti drug
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -11/+28My nephew killed himself a little over a month ago and he was drunk. Believe me I've thought about this subject a lot lately and I know if he hadn't been drinking and had a clear mind he wouldn't have done it. He was living in that drunken moment and didn't realize the permanence of his actions.
- vsujohn2, on 06/21/2009, -6/+22didn't realize the permanence of his actions? How can you NOT realize that killing yourself means you're dead, whether you're sober or not? Not to be unsympathetic, your choice of words really got me thinking. Why would someone get so hammered that they wouldn't think twice about killing themselves, unless they didnt care about living anymore?
- dsmx, on 06/21/2009, -1/+16So a drug that is a proven depressant causes more suicides. Who would of thought that?
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -1/+15I doubt it was a drunk spur of the moment thing. Not to be insensitive (it's a terrible thing to know), but it probably would have happened one way or another. Blaming the alcohol is pointless.
- itsbob, on 06/21/2009, -4/+18Ask your doctor if suicide is right for you...
- XA04, on 06/21/2009, -5/+18This article is a trap! I thought I would see a cat :(
- GEOFF361, on 06/21/2009, -1/+13i would assume that in alot of these instances the person was already intent on commiting suicide; and drank to make it easier for them to commit the act.
terrible circumstances; but i would not jump to the conclusion that consumption of alcohol leads to suicidal thoughts. Alcohol does however loosen peoples inhibitions; which certainly could make a person more likely to do any number of things - RickScarf, on 06/21/2009, -1/+12I'm sure most people don't, but if I was gonna off myself I would buy some really nice quality booze. I mean, whats a $400 bottle of scotch when money will no longer hold value for you?
- LaughingMan89, on 06/21/2009, -0/+11That would mean that you slept with your own mom.
- monkiboi, on 06/21/2009, -1/+11Please read the article and not just the headline:
"The study was among the first to analyze the role alcohol plays in suicide among different racial and ethnic groups. It found that American Indians and Alaska Natives were most likely to have been drunk when they committed suicide, with 37 percent legally intoxicated at the time of death. Among Hispanics, 29 percent were legally intoxicated when they took their lives." - itsbob, on 06/21/2009, -1/+11I would rather kill myself than drink Bud
- Amadeus2490, on 06/21/2009, -1/+11From the commercials for anti-depressant medications:
"This drug is known to increase suicidal thoughts in teens and young adults. If you experience suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor right away."
Also:
"The FDA has warned that children and adults taking antidepressants can become suicidal in the first weeks of therapy and that physicians should watch patients closely when first giving the drugs or changing dosages. The FDA is asking drug manufacturers to place explicit warnings about the drugs' side effects, including the risk of suicide, on their labels. "
http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?art ... - Link459, on 06/21/2009, -5/+15Ban alcohol. Smoke weed.
- vsujohn2, on 06/21/2009, -0/+10Well then it was the illness, not the alcohol.
- KSUdesigner, on 06/21/2009, -1/+10The alcohol just made it easier for him to follow through with it, I'm sure he had his mind made up that he was going to kill himself well before he had a drop of alcohol. It's most likely he still would have killed himself if he hadn't drank anything, it was just easier to go through with it because alcohol lowers your inhibitions. At any rate, sorry for your loss.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -1/+10It's ironic that the substance commonly associated with ending a life is also commonly associated with beginning a life. Do YOU know what irony is?
- burntcookie90, on 06/21/2009, -1/+10yea, in fact native are prone to alcoholism
- offrdbandit, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8I guess it's time for Uncle Sam to step in and ban alcohol in the name of progress since we clearly aren't capable of making our own decisions.
- stonebear, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8Ask your dealer if marijuana is right for you.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -1/+9Native Americans are notoriously prone to being alcoholics.
- doctechnical, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7If you're clinically depressed then you are NOT thinking rationally. That's why they call it a "mental illness".
- sockpuppets, on 06/21/2009, -1/+8Giggity.
- marytormey, on 06/20/2009, -1/+8Drinkers remember the happy happy they get after the first drink or 2, but they forget the suicidal suicidal that comes at the end of a full night of drinking.
- BroderickG, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7Kittuk, you sound like you've had too much to drink.
- sockpuppets, on 06/21/2009, -3/+10I hope I reincarnate as my own son.
- funk49, on 06/21/2009, -0/+6This just in...3/4 of suicide victims had some type of food in their stomach. Of course, if you're desperate enough to kill yourself, you're gonna probably be drinking as well.
- LukeBeaumont, on 06/21/2009, -0/+6A depressant doesn't necessarily make you 'depressed', they diminish function or activity of the body/mind.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -3/+9Amen, brother.
- Lederhosed, on 06/21/2009, -2/+7What portion drank Bud vs Miller?
- BroderickG, on 06/21/2009, -1/+6...Well no ***** way.
- johnduggins, on 06/21/2009, -2/+73 out of 4 people who committed suicide weren't drunk. 2 out of 3 people who committed suicide had no alcohol in their systems. Seems to me that alcohol saves lives.
- PlanBeast, on 06/21/2009, -2/+79 out of 10 cats are suicidal, Fact!
- quirkopatra, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5...and the penality for that is poking your eyes out. Blindness is a depressant.

- KibibyteBrain, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4Any drug that impacts psychological state can have, gasp, impacts on psychological state. Best not to mess with the brain if you don't have to, but this isn't surprising. But I'm pretty sure the ratio of suicides/drinkers is far far less than that are medically prescribed drugs. Also, as much as no one wants to talk about it, I'm pretty sure the use of alcohol to calm people down in times of shock has probably saved more than a few lives, too.
- Mathopolis, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4owned.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4You're right I don't think permanence wasn't the right word to use. He was depressed and I'm sure he thought about killing himself before but he never did. I think because he was drunk he didn't have the level of perspective he needed to keep himself from following through. Maybe I'm trying to rationalize it because it seems so senseless.
- mparker21311, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4Alcohol is a depressant.
Feel like *****, have a ***** ton of anxiety?
