- maliath, on 02/16/2008, -1/+26Drink hot fluids, especially in the morning. This tip was left out. rhinovirus incubates in the back of the throat and spreads in the upper respiratory area because it's cooler than the body temperature. Rhinovirus can't survive at 98.6 (hence it doesn't travel far down into the bronchi or the lungs). By drinking hot fluid (such as hot tea and lemon) you can prevent the virus from incubating.
- scootscr15, on 02/16/2008, -3/+27You're going to get sick. There are few ways around it. One is dying, thats no good. Another is isolation, not good either. Maybe you could just try to be a badass and live intelligently and take the good with the bad.
- WriterSD, on 02/16/2008, -5/+25Great tips! I love the "avoid contact with people." I wonder what folks would do if I started bowing rather than shaking their hands? :-P
- MetalliTooL, on 02/16/2008, -0/+14OMG, SUCH AN INFORMATIVE ARTICLE! I'VE NEVER HEARD THOSE TIPS BEFORE! I LEARNED SO MUCH!
- bfrank72, on 02/16/2008, -2/+15Pff. My plastic bubble is doing just fine, thank you!
- SonnyW, on 02/16/2008, -2/+13Others just don't pee and poop on their hands in the first place.
- cygnus2112, on 02/16/2008, -0/+9Wash my hands? I do so while peeing. It saves time, I can multi-task.
- amplifiedshock, on 02/16/2008, -4/+12What's so great about this article...
- mal1964, on 02/16/2008, -1/+91. Forward this to all your fellow workers.
1a. Cough in elbow bend, Not in hand. Teach others. - GramarNatzi, on 02/16/2008, -4/+11#9 Spend your life in a sanitized plastic bubble. Don't come into physical contact with anyone and NEVER touch anything that hasn't been soaked in bleach for at least 2 days.
What a stupid article. - DeskFlyer, on 02/16/2008, -3/+101-8: Implement everyday common sense.
- cygnus2112, on 02/16/2008, -0/+7I wash in the toilet water after I pee and poop. So you can't blame me!
- Imachick, on 02/16/2008, -6/+12Hold on, I'm going to call BS on about half of these points - drinking water is a 'highly effective' was of preventing colds? Can we see some clinical trials on this please? Likewise, keeping warm? This is 'highly effective'? Surely people in colder countries must catch more colds then? Is there a body of evidence to prove this? I'm a bit unsure about the 'antioxidants in fruit and veg' line too.
The list starts well, but then just gets...dubious... - purple8, on 02/16/2008, -3/+9I hate shaking hands because you always wonder if the guy you're shaking with just finished scratching himself or something. I would totally support bowing as the new norm.
- Sawta, on 02/16/2008, -1/+6It's the internet. You should trust everything you read at face value 100% of the time, no matter what.
- Culero, on 02/16/2008, -1/+6lucky for me I have no friends to catch colds from, and am rather hermit-ish
*sigh* - somberwolf, on 02/16/2008, -1/+6OK, correct me if I'm wrong, but the cold virus cannot penetrate the skin, right? Go ahead and shake hands--or do whatever social norms dictate--just wash your hands BEFORE touching your nose, mouth, eyes, or food items. We don't realize how often we touch these areas with our dirty paws!
/rubs tired eyes - ricksite, on 02/16/2008, -0/+5The water thing is most likely BS. http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp
- carpespasm, on 02/16/2008, -1/+5that one's actually good to know, and isn't BS like the "drink eleventy glasses of water a day" one. That's just how much water you're supposed to intake per day, but you get most of it from your food and other drinks, so one or two glasses will still give you the possitive effect without making you piss like a race horse.

"Hey, I have this really stupid site with about 50 ads on it. Here's my shout. Make lame/obvious comments so it goes front page and then I get money blah blah"
All of these dumb articles since the new algorithm are like a poor man's zaibatsu or something. It's just terrible. This article is not Digg-worthy. There are some retarded people on Digg, but not so retarded they need this. Anyone could find this information on WebMD or Google or whatever. It's not even cold season! And the guy's name is fatbastardblogwhatever and he's giving us cold advice?
Ugh. Whenever I see these articles I think I am going to just blanket bury every comment until the recent comments from the front page listing. I don't know if it registers in the algorithm, BUT I HOPE SO.
***** blogspam. Buried as spam. - woofers07, on 02/16/2008, -0/+4call me crazy but I believe being a germaphobe is bad for your immune system. It's been proven that bacteria can evolve to survive so-called 'anti-bacteria' soaps. I think introducing your body to many different bacteria is the best way to strengthen your immune system. I've never been keen on avoiding bacteria and have a bad habbit of biting my nails which is terrible for avoiding germs, and I honestly get sick maybe once a year tops. Embrace germs, they are the only way your immune system can adjust itself to combat them. But then again I'm definitely no doctor.
(I understand viruses are a different story) - jeuhrn, on 02/16/2008, -0/+4Exactly. Some get sick often because they have some gunk in their body, other people catch a cold or a flu every couple of years because it's around and you can't really block it out if you want to be around people.
I wash my hands all the time, and I drink nothing but water and OJ.
On tuesday I've been sick for a month. :( - cygnus2112, on 02/16/2008, -0/+4I wonder what folks would do in-person if I said I sent them a virtual hug and that I didn't want them to touch me.
- BrianCrosbie, on 02/16/2008, -1/+4I wonder if this is how it started for Howard Hughes?
- Yage2006, on 02/16/2008, -0/+3This was ***** lame.
Drink water, Rest , Eat your veggies hehehe .
/Buried - inactive, on 02/16/2008, -0/+3Come to China....where the common colds are SARS, H5N1, Shigellosis, and E coli 157:H7. You bet, washing your hands is a good tip.
- Andy1369, on 02/16/2008, -0/+3Just do it anyway- don't be a follower. ;)
- TheHim, on 02/16/2008, -1/+4The anti-biotic attitude it gaining momentum every day, this can't end well. People are getting paranoid and collect allergies like stamps.
- grovest4life, on 02/16/2008, -0/+3Just practice rules 2, 4, and 8. The rest are irrelevant i haven't been sick in two years now.
- Phennim, on 02/16/2008, -1/+4ZIE GERMS ARE COMING!!
- inactive, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2Avoid people? Virtual hugs? An occasional case of the sniffles is not a good reason to avoid real human contact. Dr Kal needs to get away from his blog for a bit.
- diablo75, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2I've been doing the elbow bend thing for a while now, nobody told me to do it like that...just made more sense, I guess.
- Higgles, on 02/16/2008, -1/+3I was thinking about taking the advice until I saw it was from "FATMANUNLEASHED.com"
- moofer, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2Actually, if more businesses would use copper-alloy door hardware, (http://tinyurl.com/29hxs3) it would eliminate much of this *****. Bacteria can not live or multiply on these surfaces. Many places of business have one or two doors in and out of the building. One person in that building gets sick, and goes to work when they shouldn't, they wipe their snot-funk all over the door handle that everyone else has to use to go in/out of the building. First thing I do when I go to work is head straight to my desk and use hand sanitizer. Don't touch your face or anything else if you can help it. I've managed to avoid many of the plagues that have infested my office.
- tlink211, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2Whenever I become aware that a cold or flu is coming on, usually in the evening for me, I take 100mgs of Zinc. I weigh 215lbs. I get the Zinc from GNC. The tablets that you swallow, on the shelf with vitamins and minerals, not Zinc and copper, just Zinc. I do this for three or four days. Do not take Zinc tablets long term. I almost never get the cold or flu. The next morning I feel fine. On those rare occasions when I do get the cold or flu...It's a world class ass kicker! Also Zicam is your friend.
- amplifiedshock, on 02/16/2008, -2/+4OMG I NEVER KNEW THAT
- Dexter77, on 02/16/2008, -4/+6The article forgot to mention the most effective one. I used to have four to six flues a year. Then I noticed that when eating raw garlic I didn't get sick any more. Now I've been eating it daily for six years and had only one short flue. I know there are downsides but you can get garlic in capsules that don't cause bad after side effects. Just remember that the garlic has to be unprosessed, just dried.
- ricksite, on 02/16/2008, -1/+3Thank you for providing evidence! Who could deny those clinical trial?
- JRootabega, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2No it's true! Garlic and fenugreek contain immunitons, the fundamental particles of immunity. They are made out of flavoquarks and positively delightful tastoids.
- roflbrothel, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2So a marine and a navy officer walk into a bathroom.
They both take a piss.
The navy officer turns around and starts washing his hands.
The marine heads out the door.
The navy man says, "You know, in the navy, they teach us to wash our hands."
The marine replies, "In the marine corp, they teach us not to piss on our hands."
FUNFACT: Your piss can cure your athelete's foot. - DermDoc, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2Nice post, but 4-8 are just wrong. You cannot prevent a cold by drinking water or hot tea. I understand your thinking about heating the back of the throat, but I'm afraid it doesn't work that way. The virus in in your throat and eyes, and nasal mucosa (I suppose you could pour hot tea down your nose, but I digress). Even if you could get all these tissues above 98.6, it would only be for minutes. The virus can live here for many hours. Think about it, even when you have a high fever and all these tissues are well above 98.6 for days it doesn't limit the virus or cure your cold or flu which lasts days after your fever drops. Antioxidants do not improve your immune system - vegetarians get just as many colds as Atkins dieters. Multivitamins do not protect you against colds. My younger brother dutifully takes zinc, high potency vit C, echinacea, and a multivitamin everyday. He has had three colds this winter. I have had none (and take none of these). He has a baby in daycare, I don't. Get it? And stay warm? Come'on now - it's silly. There are just as many colds and flus in Florida as there are in Maine.
The only real way to prevent a cold: don't have children and don't pick your nose. Or do the bubble thing as suggested elsewhere here, that would work. - o6uoq, on 02/16/2008, -1/+3Buried for being overly obvious and not actually that beneficial - if you want tips and tricks for avoiding the flu - take vitamin supplements such as vitamin C, vitamin B, garlic+horseradish and fenugreek - the vitamins help build your immunity and flush your system, the garlic and horseradish will build your immunity and fight influenza + fenugreek dries up the excess phlegm that your body produces (runny nose/blocked up) .. so to 'wash your hands' and 'drink water' as being flu prevention, well I am sorry, but this guy is a douchebag.
- Ragzouken, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2How many times do you check that you turned everything off?
- CharlesSaint, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2You just need to stop killing people and screwing hookers first Mr. Bateman. That would most likely help reduce any infections you are experiencing.
- Aensland, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2If I'm alone I do that, but in company it can look akward (may look like you're sniffing your armpit). I just cough into the back of my arm, lower from the wrist. Also, look away when you cough, coughing in someone's face is not only an unsanitary habit but rude.
- WriterSD, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2LOL! Now that would be great!
- UrinalPooper, on 02/16/2008, -1/+3Buried because it lacked the two most important cold-prevention strategies: Whiskey and bacon.
- moofer, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2But what if I have an elbow-bend-licking-problem?
