- kent1146, on 06/21/2008, -2/+81I read it over again too... but what it's saying is "try not to sleep between 45 and 90 minutes".
Less than 45 is ok, more than 90 is ok.... between 45 and 90 is no-no. - ThinkBox, on 06/21/2008, -0/+607. "Quit that silly job where they don’t let you take naps during the day."
Yeah, Ill get right on that... - geekchic, on 06/21/2008, -0/+55The article said that it contained 7 simple rules for HOW to take a nap.
It seemed to miss off the most important bit - HOW to take a nap. I am incapable of just lying down and going to sleep instantly - it takes at least a hour to get to sleep.
Any chance of an article which actually explains how it is possible to take a nap? - Entroper, on 06/21/2008, -2/+49It means you should nap for x minutes, where x < 45 or x > 90.
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -16/+56FTA: "Try not to sleep longer than 45 minutes but less than 90 minutes"
I've read this over a couple times. This is a typo, right? - tucsonsun13, on 06/20/2008, -1/+40In college I was able to nap several days a week and the benefits were noticeable. 20 minutes felt like 6 hours of sleep. You're recharged and can study or work for hours.
Good luck finding an employer that's cool with that lifestyle. The real world usually doesn't operate that way. Couple of guys at my office sleep in their cars.... - Newsdude, on 06/20/2008, -1/+38Amazing how when we were young, we hated naps, and growing older, you look forward to a lazy napping afternoon
- DMBmelch, on 06/21/2008, -1/+31Step 1: OGC
Step 2: Nap - anselm83, on 06/21/2008, -1/+28MentalFloss is usually awesome... but this is just a blatant rip-off of a Boston.com article from a couple days ago: http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/naps/
- DaFunk, on 06/21/2008, -4/+30How am I supposed to sleep while I'm trying to think about all these rules? I always though it was just...
1. Sleep
2. Wake up
3. ???
4. Profit - jaykaywhy, on 06/21/2008, -0/+24I always thought it was double standard-ish how I could not take a nap for 10-20 minutes during the day at work because it was counter-productive, but others could take a smoke break every hour or so.
Unfortunately, saying you're addicted to sleep doesn't give you any leeway, no matter how often you'd claim you'd be miserable without it or how life-threatening sleep-deprivation is. - inactive, on 06/21/2008, -1/+24Don't nap on the job if you are a bus driver.
- elshizzo, on 06/21/2008, -0/+21I have noticed that sometimes I have napped for about 60 minutes, and felt like $hit after - and slept for like 20 minutes, and felt great after. And I always wondered how that could be. Now I know - the 45 to 90 minute area is a grogg zone.
- kent1146, on 06/21/2008, -1/+20When I need to take a nap at work, I usually head to my car in the parking lot after lunch, lean the seat back, and put NPR (National Public Radio) on low volume until I drift off. I also be sure to set an alarm, so that I can wake up in half an hour.
As much as I love NPR, there's nothing like a warm car and the sound of monotone liberals to make me drift off into a happy slumber. - ogremidget, on 06/21/2008, -0/+17I just spent a month in Spain, where businesses close down for a few hours each afternoon for nap time. If your interested in taking a nap every day and getting away with it, Spain is a great place to do so.
During that month in Spain, I took a siesta every day... and wow, it sure is hard to break that daily habit. - Jonez176, on 06/21/2008, -0/+16Is your company looking for any computer/software engineers?
- ChzPlz, on 06/21/2008, -1/+17Having a whack first works for me.
- cl1tcommander, on 06/21/2008, -0/+14The wording is confusing, but I think the author meant to say try not to sleep for more than 45 minutes, but if you do nap more than 45 minutes, don't wake up before you have slept for a total of 90 minutes. Otherwise you'll wake up in the middle of REM sleep and not get a full sleep cycle making you groggy.
- PabloIV, on 06/21/2008, -0/+13Just move to Spain, the siesta has been practically institutionalized for years.
You can't get a damn thing done in the mid afternoon, everyone's either asleep or chillin' out somewhere. - totallyspotless, on 06/21/2008, -0/+12Damn! There are rules for taking naps now?!
- Vesuvias, on 06/21/2008, -0/+11I know what you are sayin! I honestly wish I could take back all those times I just wanted to play... I enjoy the 20 min nap on my lunch now @ work, people laugh but to hell with them I feel GREAT after it.
- stinieroo, on 06/21/2008, -0/+11That's just the culture of "go, go, go/work, work, work" getting to you.
- thecosmicpope, on 06/21/2008, -2/+10"Quit that silly job where they don’t let you take naps during the day."
Great idea. I'll go find a new job where my highest priority is not income or enjoyment, but whether or not they let you take a nap or not.
I don't know how it works in the US, but most UK companies would consider falling asleep at your post gross-misconduct. If you really need to nap so badly, why don't you do it during your lunch break? Your own time. Rather than your employers time? - inactive, on 06/21/2008, -3/+10ok, thanks. it was terrible wording
- focom, on 06/21/2008, -2/+9Means either sleep less than 45 min or more than 90 min at once. e.g. not 60 min.
- Syntaxis, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7So, what about people that take 2 hours to just fall asleep in the first place - like me? Too many interesting thoughts keep me awake even when I'm sleepy. Hard to time an alarm clock when you don't know -when- you'll fall asleep.
I'll just stick to coffee. - elshizzo, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7Dude, if you don't feel like tired in the afternoon, there is no reason to take a nap in the first place. If you feel tired, it shouldn't be that hard to fall asleep.
- raysaagar, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6dammit, almost lost my job trying to nap at 2.
maybe i should go to spain... - scojerroc, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6yeah, that makes sense, and i really wish it worked that way. unfortunately, even when i'm dead tired i usually have a hard time falling asleep.
- sleepyjjk, on 06/21/2008, -1/+7The first point made me feel a lot better about always wanting to take an afternoon nap. At least now I know it's not just me.
Point 7 seems a bit unreasonable though - very few jobs let you take a nap. - Hellothere123, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6Then why does it mention the benefits of 20 minute naps?
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6...or an air traffic controller.
- DaFunk, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6Insightful. And water is for people that are thirsty.
- Maryus, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6From the link -
"Also check out our worksheet, Sleeping Giants, about famous people who napped!"
... - KezG, on 06/21/2008, -0/+5Yeah, same. Takes ages for me to fall off to sleep.
- tucsonsun13, on 06/21/2008, -0/+5We need to form a Nappers Union!
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -0/+5I miss John Ritter :(
- stonebear, on 06/21/2008, -0/+5Viva la siesta!
- pjsheldon, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4"Illustration by the Boston Globe."
...plus other things. - efitz11, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4no it means you can sleep longer than 90 minutes, just don't let your sleep time fall between 45 and 90 minutes
- timewarp424, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4I think the poster was joking...
- ejhops, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4You should be very happy that you are unaware of the fact that sleepiness does not equate slipping quickly into sleep.
- davidlick, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3He just finished a 46 minute nap, give him a few minutes.
- Vodd9, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3It should be like that EVERYWHERE.
- Thekirby45, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3Nice article I thought I was the only one that liked random noise to help me fall asleep
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3sounds correct
- Nimara, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3I work in an office as a receptionist. It's a high traffic job and I take my lunch from 1pm to 2pm. During that time I retreat to my car, open up a bag lunch filled with fruit and a sandwich and some water. I always leave 20 to 30 minutes for a catnap after I eat, reclining in my seat. I used to drive around during lunch, buying hamburgers at the nearest fast food joint and then gorge myself on it before rushing back to work. Need less to say, an hour later I was tired and the wait for the job to end was excruciating, not to mention the ride back home during rush our traffic was tiresome. After I changed my diet and added a nap in, I was so much more alert for the rest of the day. I lost ten pounds with the diet change and the rest of the day passes by quickly, even the traffic on the freeway.
Naps help. Take one, bitches. - nedy78, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3Dugg the article, although a big lunch can make you sleepy. Once the pancreas starts spitting out that insulin, your glucose levels will fall, and since your brain functions on systems that rely on glucose, you could get tuckered out. Good stuff.
