- tehpwnerofn00bs, on 10/10/2007, -5/+53But like southpark proved, 1/4 of Americans are retards....
- itrichs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39meth is *****. there are three drugs i will never try: heroin, crack, and meth. ***** that *****.
- zeromancer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33"benefits to using [meth]"
such as cleaning your house in 27 seconds? - quomen, on 10/10/2007, -4/+34Please nobody try to justify meth use. I know you guys are huge advocates of MJ but this is a completely different ball game.
- fisj139, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28Benefits?
- number9ine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Well, to be honest, your sample size was even smaller than 2600.
- acdcfanbill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17After a few years, you never have to brush your teeth again!
- jwmcevoy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21Meth isn't so bad... teeth are totally overrated and track marks, if done correctly, can look quite nice.
- DukeMojo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Not sleeping for 3 days and no hunger. Not healthy, but I can see why some people would use it.
- shane1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14the average age when they tried meth was 12?! where are they getting these stats - blatant scare/shock story
- number9ine, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16weight loss?
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15That's what she said.
- Azurensis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14What percentage of those teens are prescribed it for ADD?
- vulgrin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11As George Carlin once said: "Think of how stupid the average person is, then realize that HALF of them are stupider than that!"
- MrFoodMonster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Something that needs to be realized about these surveys is that a very small fraction of the student body takes them seriously. I graduated last year from HS, and I remember taking these surveys. They'd pull you out of class and give you this survey, and we were told to take it very seriously, and as you could imagine, everyone thought it was a joke, just a way to get out of class, so they ***** the whole thing. I'm not saying that meth isn't a problem (I know it is gaining popularity in small middle of nowhere towns) but this is just something that should be taken into consideration.
- zackkitzmiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+91/33 Digg users almost got laid once, but mom was home.
- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11OK, now you're just perpetuating that stereotype that diggers dont' have girlfriends and smoke pot and that's just not right. Now excuse me while I continue to look for dates on http://www.potpartner.com
- duggtodeath, on 10/10/2007, -14/+22And I assume the remaining 32 keep their traps shut?
- toppgun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8as a high school student I dont know a single person who has done meth. I know people who do coke, aderall, pot, acid, shrooms and other drugs, but no meth.
my poison is THC - timusca, on 10/10/2007, -12/+19I hate "studies"... 2600 teens is not a large number of people. I think the margin of error is much higher than 2 percentage points. It was supposedly nationwide, but that doesn't mean they didn't pick 100 crap-hole schools from across the country to ask the question where meth useage would be a higher probability.
When I was in high school, I wouldn't have even known where to get meth, and I don't think any of my friends would have known either. - adml_shake, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Don't forget the puking water part. Thats always fun.
- subarusqueege, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7WTF am I getting fatal errors when trying to digg comments and stories? Anybody else having these problems?????
- umdigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I prefer the open sores personally.
- AdamFromMyspace, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Very helpful.. at making rednecks run down the street naked thinking they're a potato
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Take out the private school kids and it's only 1 in 500.
- dissection, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6No, you get stuck cleaning your bathroom for three days.
- kLacK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Speaking from experience, its a very slippery slope. Yes, it does give you energy and extreme concentration. But it can cost you your friends, family, job, and even your life.
- j0keR, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Brought to you by the war on drugs. As they continue to crack down on Marijuana, more teens will move to harder drugs.
- swanny89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Randomness of the sample is more important than the size of the sample.
- thewump, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5In inner cities that's more than try MATH
- j0keR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You know if it didn't have ANY benefits and it didn't make users feel like there were benefits, then nobody would be doing meth, right? I've never tried it and would never suggest anybody take it, but the fact that there are users and addicts out there means something. Even while off the drug, a lot of former addicts wish they could go back. The answer here is legal alternatives. If there was something out there with the same kind of benefits without the side-effects, what would be wrong with that?
- Navicerts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4100 friends?!
- SirGunslinger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5One would hope that private school kids have access to classier drugs than redneck crack.
- jcounterman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Come on, who hasn't filled out those stupid surveys in school and just lied through your teeth? Meth? Sure, I do it every day. How many times have I had unprotected sex in the last 6 months? About 200 times.
You can't trust these stats if they are being self-reported. Either kids will lie to hide the truth, or exaggerate to try to be funny. - ringo380, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I stopped crystal altogether in a single day after a solid year of heavy use. Haven't touched it since, and it's been about 2 years since then. About the worst withdrawal symptom I remember is grinding my teeth instinctively when I wasn't paying attention. Other than that, when you no longer consider it an option, the desire to go back goes away.
The only psychosis of any kind that i've ever experienced as a result of the drug abuse was while on the drug itself, not from the removal of it. Heroin is by far a more severe and deadly drug. They're both terrible, but for god's sake don't make heroin out to be an improvement over ice. - Azurensis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3From http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/research/jo ...
"Medicinally, methamphetamine is used in the treatment of narcolepsy, attention deficit disorder (ADD), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Typical doses are 10 mg/day or up to 40 mg daily, and a course of greater than six weeks is not recommended. Methamphetamine is infrequently used in the treatment of obesity, overeating disorders, and weight loss due to its abuse potential." - GamingTrend, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Clearly you don't live in Arizona. Horray, we are number 1! (for car theft, meth, red light running, etc.)
- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6It's a big deal because CBS wanted it sound like a big deal so they said 1 in 33 intead of 3%. no one cares about 3% of anything: 3% of people have aids, 3% of tacos are made with dog food, 3% of US workers will be fired today. No one cares about 3%. Now 1 in 33 is a whole other story because it could be YOUR kid since there's bound to be 33 kids in his school.
So annoying when they do crap like that. - jwegan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If drugs didn't have benefits, nobody would use them. While for most people the cons of meth far outweigh the pros, for some people the pros are appealing enough to use meth.
- RetlawST, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3OMG, and you can go blind too!! Unidentified penis in your anus? SURE!!
- SCVirus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5FTFA: Almost a quarter (24 percent) say meth "makes you feel euphoric or very happy." Nearly as many (23 percent) said meth helps people lose weight, and 22 percent said meth "helps you deal with boredom."
All are true, and all are 'benefits' that doesn't mean people believe meth is 'beneficial' as a whole, but it does have some benifits.
Note: Meth is prescribed (very occaisionally) in some countries (America included), and used by the US military (very occaisionally) as a stimulant (although dextroamphetamine is far more common). Logically it must have 'benefits'... and by the way, when a considerable percentage of your country can't locate itself on a world map, the 3% meth use among teens shouldn't be priority one. - wishninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It happens when you graduate high school. Friends drift away.
- weddle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I first read the title as "1 in 33 Teens Admit Trying Math"
That is probably just as accurate... - mpn401, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Isn't there some kind of pill that we can give to kids so they don't do drugs?
/Onion - jmkiii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Cleaning the corners with a toothpick.
- RedViper1999, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Rationalization at its worst. Benefits my ass. Its like the benefits you get from cutting off your own leg, sure you're lighter but you're going to bleed to death.
- DarkBungleX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31 in 33 is shockingly low, I'd expected about 1 in10 at least. Here in Australia we don't have crack cocaine so available as in USA (due to geographic location). The media talk about "Ice" (Crystal methamphetamine hydrochloride) as an epidemic here and call it a NEW drug although its been around as long as I can remember. We have a big "Ice" (meth) problem. It seemed to me to be triggered from the massive 6 month Heroin drought in 2001. Many users went to amphetamines. After that there was enough of a foothold to encourage "Cooks" to make more potent and smokable amphetamine (i.e meth) and it spread to the dance party scene. People in this scene seem to draw the line between good and bad drugs by whether you inject it or smoke it. Now many in the medical profession want to go back to the good ol' heroin days, because coming off Heroin never caused violent psychosis etc.
Its everywhere and even fueling my comment right now...! Like everything, its all about moderation.. - rezivor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Private school kids use aderall, not meth.
More like take away the sexually promiscuous and self conscious girls and its 1 in 500 - smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4it's easy to use meth and keep your teeth. and very few tweakers shoot that stuff as smoking it is far more enjoyable. don't talk about something if you don't know wtf you're talking about.
- Woah_G!, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3There might not be any long term benefits, but there are some short term benefits due to the initial effects of the drug. IMO, the consequences far outweigh any of the benefits so the use of meth should be avoided at all non-doctor approved situations.
