- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -10/+65Today's noobs are tomorrow's gurus.
There is a difference between being uninformed and being stupid. You are informed because you chose to spend your time this way. This guys' a noob. You were once a noob too.
You are neither, you're just a jerk. - JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+66Based on the typing this kid is probably spoiled by his dad or mom. It reminds me of this one persian kid I know who took his computer apart to clean all the dust out (acrylic case) and then calls me and tells me his computer is going very slow and he doesn't know why. So I go to his house to check it out and it won't even start up. We guess it might be the board and/or the RAM so we go buy a new board and RAM. I pull the heat sink off and "where the ***** is all the thermal grease?" to which he replies "oh I thought it was dust so I wiped it off". . . The processor had been reaching temperatures of over 90 C. Then . . I go home, since the store is closed, I tell him to NOT apply thermal grease himself after he buys it, and to NOT go to the store with out me. Well he doesn't take my advice, buys what he thinks is thermal grease, applies it, and with the thermal adhesive he bought glues his heat sink to his processor. Luckily a week later I was able to find a way to separate them salvaging the processor ruining the heat sink in the process.
Out of this whole ordeal . . his dad bought him a new faster processor, an AMD 4400+, a board, and two gigs of RAM so he could play world of ***** warcraft . . and this is a kid who wants to be in al-CIAda when he grows up, and will be in the marines soon, no joke. - tehbear, on 10/12/2007, -4/+48When I was 10 I received a remote controlled hovercraft for my birthday. My brother told me I could use it on the lake and I had nothing to worry about because the electronics were waterproof. 5 minutes later it was water logged and it never worked again. I don't think I'm stupid, just naive for believing someone else without taking 2 minutes to try to read up on it and verify for myself.
It is a hell of a lesson to learn but I bet he does his research from now on. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42"'Hey, tehbear! Those hovercrafts don't work on water.'
'Unless you've got power.'"

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/1236/whydoesntthisworkzr7.jpg - BrainRecall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23True, very old joke. But, sometimes the odd seems possible to some people.
For instance, one kid in high school I knew decided to try plugging a NES cartridge into the ISA slot in his computer "cause they looked similar." Well, they kinda are, and they do fit together. I wonder what he thought would happen when he turned the computer on. What did happen is a fried motherboard and a dead NES cartridge.
Another true story: my friend tried installing his own CD burner. He ordered it off ebay and got impatient to install it (even after I warned him not to even open the computer up). So, he got it screwed in but got confused with the cabling. There was no place to plug in the included IDE cable, so he plugged it in the next most likely spot, the front-bay connector for his SoundBlaster Live. If you know what they look like, you'll agree that an IDE cable would connect to it no problem. He said he turned the computer off after he started to smell smoke.
Sure enough, one wire in the entire cable got so hot that it burned away the insulation. When I managed to get things connected correctly, nothing was damaged at all. Amazing. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24how about I block you
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18@Ravatar
Agreed. At least with Digg, we can bury and block some of the more idiotic posters. Seriously, that forum actually managed to make digg's discussions look good. - av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Someone draw a line on his penis and see what he does when he gets a problem down there

Find new friends, or at the very least get rid of this one. - kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Looks like they already did... and got it.. and did whats described.
- tobias1482, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"why can people like that afford nice cards like that? :("
because he might be really, really, good at doing something that you're not as good at doing that doesn't require the same skills?

Also... i almost feel bad for that kid...but people like that have no business installing anything in their systems. - Ravatar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15The funniest part of this entire story is the flood of ignorant ass childish flamers that reply to the poster.

- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You got something against unibrows, huh? Don't wanna go spreading that anti-unibrite crap around, you'll make enemies.
Next you'll be saying that should have their own schools... - onidraky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I was just thinking that same thing. It was probably more funny reading the other guy in the forum constantly calling him "dum."
- gameforge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9bryanjk:
Based on what he said, he didn't get a refurb from Newegg, he got a new one from Best Buy; still in the $350+ range today. This post is from August of 2005, so they were probably much more back then. Either way, I'm giving this about a 0.2% chance of being true.
First, that card came complete with an installation guide, which obviously said nothing about cutting parts off the board if it didn't fit. Certainly at least AFTER he cut it, plugged it in, and saw that nothing worked, he'd refer to the manual and realize exactly what he did wrong (before hitting the Internet, while waiting for his "expert friend" to become available).
Second, the picture is definitely photochopped. Look at the bracket, towards the bottom - does that look right? There's no shadow. Also, look along the top edge, particularly towards the front - debris that doesn't look like table grain (zoom in if you have the Firefox Zoom extension.... very easy to see). Also look along the front edge... that picture was taken against a gray background, from the looks.
Third, it would seem that if he posted this on a forum and saw a large flock of people essentially ripping on him for being a complete idiot, he'd be upset with himself, his friend, the people on the forum, or something... rather, he just kind of said "oh well, guess I shouldn't touch the inside of my computer anymore". By contrast, if he photochopped a 7800 pic and told a story like that purely for fun, it would be perfectly consistent with his attitude. And what a great joke, right? So many gamers foaming at the mouth, some feeling sorry for him and sympathizing, others suggesting ways to pull off a return/exchange, most just blasting him for stupidity - it's over a year later and it still made Digg headlines... this card was the GeForce 8800 of a year ago... good joke. Haha.
Fourth, if he's so rich, why'd he get such a pathetic computer?
I just don't think it's true. One can never be certain, of course; if it is true, I'd actually kind of like to meet the guy... - theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8why can people like that afford nice cards like that? :(
- carlhungis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8What would make you believe that this was true? It's just someone trolling for attention on a forum.
- rumor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8this is OLD and it is FAKE
- diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15This reminds me of the guy who came into our shop with the complaint that his drives were not working.
He had gone to Radio Shack and bought an additional 40 pin connector and customized his PC with a 3 drive IDE cable. Yes, four connectors on one ribbon. Dooh!
Fortunately, the hardware survived; he did not short the cable. I am surprised at the stuff that happens when people do not take the time to read even a little about a subject before mechanically adjusting hardware.
For all noobs out there, READ and NEVER make something fit. If, it does not fit, there is usually a very good reason like it was designed not to fit into a legacy device. Yes, I was a noob at one time, but I read a lot of articles, books and online info before I started messing with hardware. - superkoopa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Geez, this is OLD OLD OLD!!!!!
- skidogallard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I sure would love to see a link to the source!
