- BrandonMills, on 01/15/2008, -1/+29With all these things drawing off the PCs central power supply, I hope we soon get better tools for monitoring the actual health and output of our current power supplies. Right now, it seems like guesswork.
- sonnysavage, on 01/15/2008, -0/+21Hell yes.
- TomKarpik, on 01/15/2008, -0/+21Finally! This is what eSATA *should* have been from the start.
- rharris, on 01/15/2008, -0/+15Unfortunately it will only support 2.5" drives - meaning about 500mA or so. The one eSATA drive I use is 3.5" because of the lower cost per GB.
If I'm going to use a 2.5" drive, it'll be USB because the data rate for USB is faster than what the drive can support anyway and every machine out there has a USB port. - inactive, on 01/15/2008, -2/+16me love you long time
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -0/+8tests of an external hard drive CPU use:
USB 2.0: 13%
FW800: 2.6% - Dubbsacc, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7There are eSata ports on some, next to the USB ports.

on lsd it looks pretty good actually ;) - jayliquori, on 01/15/2008, -2/+8unless computers and laptops have easily accessible eSATA plugs, it doesnt mean anything
- rharris, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5USB 3 will be approximately 5 Gbps (more likely around 4Gbps). eSATA already is 300 MBps, or 2.4 Gbps. While this is a big improvement, it won't leave eSATA in the dust. The problem with eSATA is the lack of ports and OS support.
Consider this diagram:
HD Platter --> HD Buffer --> HD Interface (eSATA) --> Enclosure Interface (USB 3)
When you connect a hard drive up to USB 3, you're limited by the transfer speeds of the HD. Most hard drives have a transfer rate from the platters to the buffer of around 60 MBps (480 Mbps, or around USB 2 speeds) and a transfer rate from the buffer to the interface of 300 MBps (2400 Mbps, or eSATA speeds).
Even if the external interface speed is faster than eSATA, the HD won't unload the data from the buffer any faster. And if the file you want is bigger than the buffer size (8MB or so), or the file is not in the buffer, you're still going to be limited by the platter to buffer transfer speed.
Better? Yes. Revolutionary? For hard drives, not so much. - Tiemmothi, on 01/15/2008, -1/+5ill just wait for the next revision of fire-wire.. less CPU load than USB. eSATA sounds nice but i already have a good bit invested in fire-wire 400 and 800 devices.
- nazsco, on 01/15/2008, -0/+4about freaking time.
how about the same to SATA? - sodade, on 01/15/2008, -2/+6Gee, do you think they could make the damn SATA connector ***** stay on? Every time I fricking open my case, these things come loose. They are kinda the opposite of molex plugs that basically require you to smash your knuckle to remove.
It's pretty lame that these kind of devices have whole ***** committees behind them and they still suck ass... - bejayel, on 01/15/2008, -0/+3me love laugh out loud
- Icetype, on 01/15/2008, -0/+3You gotta get the SATA cables with little metal clips. The cheapo ones don't have these. I have a pile of cheapo cables that I don't use, because I too got sick of them coming off all the time. Order some new cables on Newegg. ;)
- swordedge, on 01/15/2008, -0/+3my eSata drive works very well expanding the capacity of my DVR. Losing the power cord would have been nice as I already have about eight things that require electricity behind my TV.
- CrypticSkeptic, on 01/15/2008, -0/+3My connectors don't just fall off, are you using the jaws of life to open your case??
- OnipSemaj, on 01/15/2008, -1/+3Exactly. Most new PCs, even higher-end ones, don't come with very robust PSUs - 300-400 watts max.
- Breepee, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2Why is he digged down? eSata at the moment is found pretty much nowhere and if it is, then never on a notebook where it would make the most sense to use external drives.
- bigteebo, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2This is what drives should have had 20 years ago. Power cables from power supplies have gone from a major pain in the ass to route, to only a minor pain in the ass(with the modular individual cables).
- swordedge, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2While the listed data rate may be faster than what the drive can support, the USB overhead is a killer. I have an external drive that is both USB and Firewire. The firewire interface outruns the USB one by a noticeable margin. This is why when it arrives, Firewire 3200 will still outrun USB 4.8 Gigabit, overhead.
- Tenoq, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2Given most PCs come with 400W PSUs at a minimum these days (especially any with eSATA), and your average system at full-load draws 150-200W - I think we have a little bit of room to move. Hell, even a gaming system doesn't draw much power, comparatively:
http://www.silentpcreview.com/article265-page4.htm ...
Only overclockers need to worry - and they already bought a huge PSU to accommodate their hobby. :p Power is a COMPLETE NON-ISSUE, IMO. - TrevorPace, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2The thing is that right now most power supplies are just Transformers followed with a Bridge to Turn to AC as well as a smoothing circuit. They have power ratings that once they exceed they'll just not be able to provide the current which leads to overheating and whatnot.
There is no way to measure the "health" of a power supply but there definitely could be some way to hook up an ammeter to it and have you computer control the current it allows out...(Giving preference to the mother board.) - unknownsoldierX, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2Yeah. I always thought they should be a little looser, if anything.. They can be hard to pull off if the case is too crowded to get a decent angle to grip them.
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2Um much faster than firewire!!
- djpants428, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1You can buy eSATA PCMCIA or Express card adaptors
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -1/+2eSATA is connected through a PCI slot on your desktop. I don't think they have eSATA for laptops, but I could be wrong.
- chedabob, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Medion laptops have a hybrid eSata/USB2 connector.
- OnipSemaj, on 01/15/2008, -1/+2I laugh out loud!
- IndigoMoss, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Everest does a pretty good job, you might want to check it out. You can monitor pretty much anything you ever wanted to with it.
- oldhick, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1You can simply buy a conversion kit for about $5 that will turn your internal SATA connections (on the motherboard) into eSATA connectors. It works fine for me and was cheaper than buying a eSATA card.
- cbuddha42, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Internal drives so you only need 1 cable rather than 2 I can see, but I hope external drives will retain the external power block option. Load on PSUs just keeps going up, and many people really do not have heavy duty enough ones to handle all this extra load. > 500W power supplies which were a fringe item not to long ago are going to become more and more necessary which just means more cost and more heat in your computer. One of things stopping people from overtaxing the barely adequate power supplies vendors keep using is most people don't want to open up their computer and install more cards or internal drives, but what will happen when external drives start drawing more load? What are they going to write in the systems requirements box? Must have 30W spare capacity on your power supply?
- bejayel, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1This is a great idea. Its too bad the scalability is so poor for both the internal and external implementations. It would be great for an average user, even though would would probably have no idea, nor would they care.
Anyway i just bought a new 800 Watt powersupply. I would hate for it to become out dated because i need to plug more power to my motherboard in order to power 4 hard drives. - InfiniteNothing, on 01/15/2008, -3/+4USB 4 will leave USB 3 in the dust (There's always something faster/better on the horizon)
- theblacknight, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1You are aware that, inside the enclosure, the drive still has to connect via SATA to the USB and so USB can never be faster than the drive.
- yunus, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1But then people would realize that they didn't need to buy a 1000W power supply even with all their gadgets powered by it.
- Error601, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Could come in handy but the world seems to be going toward Ethernet drives.
- doom777, on 12/24/2008, -0/+1It's on most Desktop motherboards.
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Apple to come out with new eSATA standard. They will copy others, make it exactly the same and call it iSATA !!
- mahdaeng, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Well, it's about time!
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I thought we already established that power and signal in the same cable is a bad idea.
- Topher06, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1This should have been the feature of SATA from day one, both internal and external. Just get rid of those crappy HDD power cables that are hard to fit in the drive and pull out once stuck in and the pins push out easily because of cheap manufacturing.
- Matteos, on 01/15/2008, -1/+2What we need is a way to connect multiple hard drives internally with one cable... oh wait.
- sodade, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Thanks! I just ordered some.
- Tenoq, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I have eSATA on my case. Cost $60US.
- DrSarno, on 12/25/2008, -0/+0The entire US government Department of Defense banned USB flash drives in the past month, and disabled the ports on our computers. so, in my line of work, we've just discovered these as a handy way to finally get us back out of the stone age, using CD-R's, and back into the future. They're even cheaper straight from Kanguru.

(and a pain in my ass) - SniperZero, on 01/15/2008, -2/+2That would be nice for all my hard drives inside my case wouldn't look like a spider web (made by a spider on lsd) :p
- prosy1986, on 07/30/2008, -0/+0I have one 160 GB SATA drive fro,m Seagate which they gave me as warranty period replacement. The problem with that drive is it makes lot of noise just like a car when accelerating. My another sata is silent. Is that seagate people give sub standard products as warranty replacement? I'am not sure.
