- Falldog, on 02/28/2008, -4/+453The cool thing about having a digital camera is being able to see which pictures turned out badly so you can delete them and try again.

- perkonis, on 02/28/2008, -1/+183I am utterly amazed that thing would keep spinning long enough to do that kind of damage.
- blumer, on 02/28/2008, -1/+170Looks like all the bits fell off the platters.
- kavaliro, on 02/28/2008, -5/+157We pulled a website apart at work this afternoon. It had a nasty rattle to it before we opened it, but we didn't expect this:

- debuggercll, on 02/28/2008, -10/+124Computers are just crazy and fragile. I put 12 super strong magnets on my hard drive, set fire to the chassis, let a grenade explode inside of it, and threw it from the international space station into a volcano, and the damn thing broke! I think it didn't have enough jiggahertz.

- inactive, on 02/28/2008, -1/+21people used to do this all the time
- pixelguru, on 02/28/2008, -0/+20You don't really need to separate the magnet from its little steel holder, but if you want to, the best way I've found is to clamp the edge of the steel in a vice, grab the opposite end with a stout pair of pliers (being careful not to grab the magnet itself or for your pliers to get stuck to the super magnet) and BEND THE STEEL CHASIS. The steel will bend, but the magnet will not, creating a handy gap which you can use to slide a flat-bladed screwdriver into and finish off the separation process. I wouldn't get a razor blade ANYWHERE NEAR one of those magnets (especially the Seagate Barracuda ones which I have to pry off my fridge with both hands).
Also, don't forget to remove the tiny (often cubical) magnet which docks the heads. These are sometimes difficult to separate from their plastic holders, but they're also incredibly strong for their size. - dinostabOMG, on 02/28/2008, -1/+18Dugg for them dealing with it well.

- pixelguru, on 02/28/2008, -0/+16In the words of Wil Smith, I have GOT to get me one of THESE!
While I admit that part of the fun of removing these magnets from dead drives was that they were free... The magnets that company sells are cool beyond words. How in the heck would you ship a magnet with over 500LBS of pull force though??? Wouldn't that thing erase any magnetic media in a 50' radius. I'm picturing the FedEx driver trying in vain to pry the box off the inside of his truck!!! - xyqxyq, on 02/28/2008, -3/+19I see what you did there, it's 0.01 less than 1.21.
- tidu, on 02/28/2008, -0/+16yeah it was kinda funny, they all just linked to the first result in a google image search for mirror. it was a mirror with a vase next to it.
- jgzman, on 02/28/2008, -0/+16While that is certainly possible, I recommend this site: http://tinyurl.com/89pbx
They will sell you the same magnets as small as 1/8 inch cube, and as large as 2in x2in x 3in. - inactive, on 02/28/2008, -7/+22you win
- gudnbluts, on 02/28/2008, -1/+16"a hard drive without porn"
Is that even possible? -
