Worst hard drive crash ever [pics]
neowin.net — We pulled a bad drive apart at work this afternoon. It had a nasty rattle to it before we opened it, but we didn't expect this:
- 4360 diggs
- digg it
- ooshlahe, on 02/28/2008, -65/+29Wow...thats pretty bad... I messed up a hard drive by sticking 7 internal speakers to it and it wasn't even that badly damaged.
- theaceoffire, on 02/28/2008, -15/+65How did you install a speaker inside a hard drive?
- Satanael, on 02/28/2008, -4/+38Internal speakers are big, powerful magnets. They'll grab the screwdriver from your hand.
- IllBeBack, on 02/28/2008, -1/+4Whoosh!
- ooshlahe, on 02/28/2008, -13/+8last time i checked sticking something to another object does not require installation. considering there are magnets on internal speakers i dont recall it being very difficult

- twiztidsinz, on 02/28/2008, -3/+42ooshlahe said TO it... as in sticking the magnets TO the hard drive, not IN.. not that hard to understand.
- Petrie, on 02/28/2008, -13/+4Unless he's a fan of having surround sound inside his case, it actually IS quite hard to understand.
- twiztidsinz, on 02/28/2008, -1/+10Not if the intention was to damage the harddrive
i.e. it was a bad drive and you wanted to see it mess up even more
- twiztidsinz, on 02/28/2008, -1/+10Not if the intention was to damage the harddrive

- Petrie, on 02/28/2008, -42/+4That comment punched my penis. Reported.
- Coded1, on 02/28/2008, -0/+4Fight the power man!
- debuggercll, on 02/28/2008, -10/+123Computers are just crazy and fragile. I put 12 super strong magnets on my hard drive, set fire to the chassis, let a grenade explode inside of it, and threw it from the international space station into a volcano, and the damn thing broke! I think it didn't have enough jiggahertz.
- paradigmx, on 02/28/2008, -1/+281.20?

- NullPolarity, on 02/28/2008, -1/+40.01, IT'S OVER NINE THOUSANDTHS!
- therightclique, on 02/28/2008, -7/+1huge fail... he didn't even say jiggawatts, which is his bad i guess.

- scooterMX, on 02/28/2008, -3/+12you probably didn't adjust the flux capacitor!
- Fxer, on 02/28/2008, -11/+1Do you mean jiggyherz?
(obscure Banjo Kazooie reference)
(not so obscure now that i said what the reference was) - iceblademan, on 02/28/2008, -2/+4Having worked in retail for many years, I've heard it all. That statement pretty much sums up what every Babyboomer has said to me in one ridiculous statement. good job
- paradigmx, on 02/28/2008, -1/+281.20?
- billbrasky, on 02/28/2008, -54/+3What do you think spins a hard drive? Maybe a powerful magnet? You are stupid if you think that one of the main components of a hard drive erases it.
- chromerium, on 02/28/2008, -0/+30Fail.
- sERIALeATER, on 02/28/2008, -4/+3Troll failed.
- madm0nk, on 02/28/2008, -0/+17http://www.howstuffworks.com/hard-disk.htm
- gbarger, on 02/28/2008, -0/+12and you're stupid if you think it won't mess it up....on and a magnet doesn't "spin" a hard drive. An electric motor spins the platters, and there is a strong magnet inside the drive to operate the servo to control the reader arm, but on the end of each reader arm is a highly sensitive magnet that's used to read/write on the platters. So...hard drives a really sensitive to magnetic fields. That's a quick and dirty explanation, but a magnet will definitely mess up a hard drive.
- Tenoq, on 02/28/2008, -0/+6It has to be an epic magnet though, and very close to the surface. It's been tested time and again - try actually using a magnet to erase a HDD without opening it: it's very difficult. I've run a HDD magnet (very strong) over the outside of another HDD - no damage to the data at all. With an electro-magnet you might be able to do some damage, but people always overstate how sensitive HDDs are to magnets.
- dacheetah, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1One of these would probably cause some hurt:
http://www.magnet.com.au/products.php?sectionId=2& ...
(They have one that at a rough conversion is 2" x 2" x ½".)

- digidelia, on 02/28/2008, -6/+2trouble is getting the magnets off without
-destroying the magnet
-slicing your hand off with the razor blade
but i agree, those magnets are awesome- pixelguru, on 02/28/2008, -0/+19You don't really need to separate the magnet from its little steel holder, but if you want to, the best way I've found is to clamp the edge of the steel in a vice, grab the opposite end with a stout pair of pliers (being careful not to grab the magnet itself or for your pliers to get stuck to the super magnet) and BEND THE STEEL CHASIS. The steel will bend, but the magnet will not, creating a handy gap which you can use to slide a flat-bladed screwdriver into and finish off the separation process. I wouldn't get a razor blade ANYWHERE NEAR one of those magnets (especially the Seagate Barracuda ones which I have to pry off my fridge with both hands).
Also, don't forget to remove the tiny (often cubical) magnet which docks the heads. These are sometimes difficult to separate from their plastic holders, but they're also incredibly strong for their size.- jgzman, on 02/28/2008, -0/+16While that is certainly possible, I recommend this site: http://tinyurl.com/89pbx
They will sell you the same magnets as small as 1/8 inch cube, and as large as 2in x2in x 3in.- pixelguru, on 02/28/2008, -0/+16In the words of Wil Smith, I have GOT to get me one of THESE!
While I admit that part of the fun of removing these magnets from dead drives was that they were free... The magnets that company sells are cool beyond words. How in the heck would you ship a magnet with over 500LBS of pull force though??? Wouldn't that thing erase any magnetic media in a 50' radius. I'm picturing the FedEx driver trying in vain to pry the box off the inside of his truck!!! - 1randomnumber, on 02/28/2008, -0/+7They ship them in a 5x5 box filled with styrofoam around the magnet. It'll still pull a bit, but not much to be noticeable at that length.
However, they do usually come with warnings to keep a 10 ft radius from ferrous metals, or it can spontaneously fly towards the object, and if you are inbetween the metal and the magnet, cause severe internal organ crushing and death. - NullPolarity, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2Holy *****, those magnets are a geek's dream.
- jgzman, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1"A small child recently lost his hand when his father left two # 31 supermagnets unattended. The child picked one up and when he approached the other magnet on a nearby table, it became airborne and obliterated his small hand."

- Zippo, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1When I tore apart my old hard drive and removed the magnets, I simply let the two piece stick together... after a couple of times of prying them apart, they separated from the steel.

- guythomas, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2Memories of two bad hard drives in two months. What pieces of crap!
- betobeto, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1And that's why I still backup all my music and data on CDs. Hard drives can give up the ghost when you least expect it. This is what I call the dark side of the Brave New (digital) World. Maybe when big capacity SSD drives become truly affordable these instances will be less likely to happen, but for now it is better to play it safe and make an habit out of backing up everything important.
- saisumimen, on 02/28/2008, -0/+6Those Quantum Fireball drives were solid. Those drives that were manufactured in Singapore are a hell of a lot higher quality than the Maxtor and WD garbage coming out of Chinese factories these days.
- Yazoo, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2I guess the proof is in the pictures?
- saisumimen, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2In case you're not joking, that right there is a weird fluke. I still have 5 QFs from 1998/99/2000 (20gb drives) that I use to stream media from. They've far outlived two Chinese Maxtors and one Chinese WD (which burned after 4 months). If you inspect the actual drives themselves, they're made out of higher quality materials.

- shoeberto, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3I was running my OS off a 9gb Fireball up until about a year ago. - trogdor282, on 02/28/2008, -0/+4What is the head made out of that it could do that much damage to the platter without disintegrating?
- CHalCogen, on 02/28/2008, -0/+4The head is made of a ceramic, ferrite. The disc is made of a type of steel optimized for magnetic properties (with a thin coating of recording material on top). Ceramics (or rocks) can easily grind down steel, especially if it's thin, spinning rapidly, and ground upon over time. Secondary collisions with flying parts were the probable cause of the shattering of the HDD magnets, which are also made of a ceramic. Ceramics are very hard, but very brittle.

- diggduggjoe, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2I saw one like this once. It was on a server that they never backed up properly. They lost a ton of data that volunteers had entered. They had to start from scratch on that project. The had to pay OnTrack several hundred just to find out it was toast. Metal filings everywhere!
I saw an IBM SCSI with the glass platter do something like this. You could see through the glass. I wish I had kept the drive for a test. I wonder how hard you would need to throw it to shatter the platters.- isaactwito, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3If I remember correctly from the Screen Savers (RIP) a hammer does the job fairly well.

- Peavey, on 02/28/2008, -2/+2No, it's the way that Digg does links. If you click the link and delete the close parenthesis at the end, they work just fine. Just be sure that .JPG suffix is capitalized.
- ceralor, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2In other words, he was retarded for not putting a space between the parenthesis and the URL.
- Peavey, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Actually, the first time I posted a link I did the same thing. The only reason I noticed it was because whenever I post a link to anywhere I like to test it to make sure it does what I wanted.
It is entirely possible that he had no idea that it would happen, and may still not know.

- jb0nd38372, on 02/28/2008, -8/+8By the looks of the picture it looks like the drive somehow got moisture inside which in turn created corrosion. I just wonder if beside the noise it was making if it was capable of actually holding data.
- rusty0101, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Hold data? Sure. Is it accessible? Well, not with the mechanics of that drive, and there will be significant gaps if you attempt to use really advanced clean room tech and so on.
From a practical standpoint, I would suggest it be considered Write Only Storage. That does presume that the controller isn't failing the drive already. (It had better be.) - arcticblue, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Did you see the same pics I did? The platter had been shaved all the way through.
