- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uh, I think what no one here seems to be realising is that you can't just plug this into the wall like you can with a conventional power supply. All this is doing is changing the pinout of 12 V DC. If you notice, on the site it says "The picoPSU-120 provides a cool, silent 120 Watts of power for small PC designs using a single 12V power source." So you still need some sort of external power brick or something like that. It's definitely cool, but it's not revolutionising PC design.
- terminalcity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ther eis a bit of sleight of hand in the way this is being reported... this isn't the power supply most posters above thing it is. It's actually a DC-DC converter, which, as 'eobanb' above says, will only work from a battery or separate DC supply. You still need a big battery or a fairly large switching supply (or 'brick') to reduce AC line voltage to low-voltage DC. Sorry.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As to the heat issue.
"Over 96% efficiency"
x/120=4/100
x=4.8 watts max dissipated as heat at full power - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Think of the price!!"
$50

- Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*Correction to my last comment:
I haven't heard of any problems with this thing yet, I'm just predicting there will be. - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1The best mortgage rates, refinance, home loan, real estate, realty http://tophomemortgageloan.com
- eDan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dickyducky:
This powersupply is meant for use with CarPC's, where the power source is 12V already. 120W is plenty (my previous CarPC ran on 90W). - jeremycole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just ordered one for my robot project (which will indeed run off of 12V DC power) ... I've been looking for exactly this: A very small DC-DC converter for ATX. I have looked at the other power supplies on the site before, but they were all too large for their purpose. This should be sweet! $60 with tax and shipping.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, I don't know if I'd trust it, it's so small.. and it looks like the wires just hang out the back..
Perhaps they could make a slightly larger one (a microPSU)? maybe 250W and with detachable molex connectors? - cokebottletuque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...if you are using this psu do you really have room for a floppy drive?
- Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People who love saving their hdd with a couple bucks?
- Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is hardcore own.
- Diggg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting heat dissipation problem at full power!
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mmmm.. laptop pwng?
- sanket21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's 120W, and has a couple of molex connectors and a floppy connector"..
whos using floppies these days .. !! - Dreded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow check out the site http://www.mini-box.com/s.nl/sc.8/category.13/it.A/id.417/.f they have AWSOME deals on car computers and other Mini PSU's
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wish that they could do more watts though!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg
- cesclaveria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guees this dont work with Power Supply right? http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=195
:P - chriis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think of the price!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what can you run on 120w?
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That looks like it could get hot... no heatsync is why its so small, and also why it would probably fry after abotu 10 minutes of gaming...
- engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wonder how many "modders" will zap themselves on this thing?
and what kind of power cleaning does this thing do? Not that the power that comes out of my 30 dollar psu is very clean... but... - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is this real?! 0_o
- GotCoffee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On that Mini-Box site, they sell a 200W PS, just a little larger and the external bricks if you wanted to hook it up to house power.
As far as heat, most of the heat generated in a PS is from rectifiers. - Rhomboid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As others have already said this is a DC-DC converter. You can't plug this into the wall like a normal power supply. It's meant for embedded or portable applications where the 12V DC source must be stepped down to the 3.3V, 5V, -12V, etc voltages. So in those applications you tend to have low power requirements since it's running off a battery which is why it's "only" 120 watts. All you casemodders will need to look elsewhere unless you're trying to build something to run off your car's battery.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That looks like it could get hot... no heatsync is why its so small, and also why it would probably fry after abotu 10 minutes of gaming.."
You don;t game with a 120w power supply. - Legion303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"what can you run on 120w?"
My Pentium 1 linux firewall runs off of 65W, IIRC. That was enough to power the board, cards and one HD. - voisine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got an old k6-2 333 bsd box running off a similar but slightly larger 200w dc powersupply. The system is fanless and has that super quiet single plater 40gig barracuda iv... great for a web/mail/p2p server... ah silence....
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be perfect for a digital picture frame project.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not bad not bad!
- Tom | http://www.tomwrote.info - dickyducky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0120W is definately not enough, makes sense if its at least 400W
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell SX260, the power supply is entirly external.... when will they come out with that on a 3rd part basis?
- mpegcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just up the watts and your good
- jeremycole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI, to those commenting about having no space for a floppy drive: that connector is just a basic style of power connector. I for one am grateful that it has the connector already, since my CompactFlash IDE adapater uses exactly that connector (as many of them do, since it's smaller).
- Novion76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hot damn
- godulous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awsome!
- bnolsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could be useful with a UPS system that only outputs a 12V signal.
We need to get rid of the traditional PS and start shipping UPS units that output only DC. - p3lEr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice..
- shortstax33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This lil gizmo seems like it would be more at home in robotics then in a PC. Especially with the 12V input. All things considered, real handy looking, with good implications. I like it, i like it alot.
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome.
- kaptainKraken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0that is ***** hardkore awsome.
- Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That is an impressive looking thingy. As cool as this thing seems I would wait a year or so for the bugs to be worked out. I would have to build some uber-bad-ass computer just to see it blow up because of the crazy experimental power supply I used.
