Here are some of the world's smallest web servers as requested. Note: Web servers a not necessarily full blown servers.

http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS8386088053.html - JimmyRyan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not a server.. Whats it serving as a USB storage device?!? Thats kind of like saying that a DVD player is a really small TV.
- thebeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not a server, no LAN port! And it has to be plugged into a powered on host computer. This is lame!
- _jinx_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$239.00 512mb
$199.00 256mb - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i saw a server on some TV show that was just an ethernet port...well the size of.
- hybrid8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sigh
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's the point of that? Its got a 400mhz processor. Why not just use the host computer's processor?
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have one here in my hands.. it sucks so far. =P
the fingerprint authentication works in windows - but seems to choke up elsewhere.. still working with it. - funderbolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Usually, when you say "World's Smallest Linux Server," I'd think of HTTP server. It is a handheld computer that is independent of the host computer.
The site is actually hosting a contest for someone to come up with an application for it (that is Open Source, of course--unintentional pun). The prize is $50,000. It does have more computing power than many Wireless Access Points.
One good application I can think of is a vunerability assessment application that scans for vunerabilities on the desktop its plugged into. It could pop a window up to ask the user if they want to upgrade their system and the handheld forces the computer to upgrade. This would be good for small site computer labs that doesn't have an IT staff that does not have the privilage of a dedicated server that pushes upgrades. This would automate the process.
Its pretty easy to think of many "black hat" applications, but those can be done relatively easily with just a USB flash drive.

This piece of hardware is not that special, except for the biometric reader. I can get a PDA for about $250. A refurbed Linux PDA (Sharp Zaurus SL-5500) for about $150. Sure yours has a bigger CF card but you can get 1GiB CF for under $100 and you have a PDA with an interface.

This could be neat but when need more technical stuff on your website before I'd even consider buying one. - CoolJammer00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it isn't up a guy's ass, is it?
- sgtstadanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude...there are several linux distro's you can get for free that will boot off a usb storage key. And hey you actually get to use the host proc and mem instead the paltry amount on this device. The biometric looks cool, but other than that what gives?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At linuxworld I was the device and the company they has a mechanical bull at their display. The device needs to be plugged into a computer via a usb cable it then boots up and has software on it. It was demoed on a Windows XP box, they say that I can also operate off a linux/unix/mac box also It needs the usb connection for its internet access but at the same time has its own ip and mac address. Its a novelty toy and they didn't even have anything to say about it other than "Its a linux server". Its a very expensive live linux cd.
- bryantee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Face it guys, it's pretty cool. You carry your Linux setup with you. I guess you could use a normal USB bootale distro, but it contains the proc and everything. I've got a 133Mhz comp at home, this 400MHz PPC will spank it. So if that's all you've got and you're on the run, you can bring your server with you.
- cipnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol i got hit #1337 on the first visit *falls over*
- Rojahon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's also a great Led Zeppelin song
- frontbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather just buy a Linux pda. The ethernet port one is pretty cool to bad shipping it from Europe would cost a ton according to their site in spite of it's small size. They should make a tiny 2 ethernet port size Linux device, instant firewall or router.... Now THAT would be a good idea! A long time ago when TSS was still around i remembered seeing an episode on building a Linux router on some embedded hardware. I'd like to replace my Linux router but would prefer a low power box, with good firewalling capabilities as well...
- hybrid8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i cant find the price. this thing is awesome. can we say portable personal server?
- davidg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's not a server.. Whats it serving as a USB storage device?!?"
Why would it have to work a storage device? If it pretended to be a USB network adapter, it could appear to be a remote server behind a virtual network. Great if you want to run your own server application. Must be a million applications for secure access/installations. Could be like a smart card on steroids. - NateW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty cool. However, see www.gumstix.com for a smaller Linux server that came out sooner. :-) USB power is an option for that one too. Not fingerprint reader, less-pretty case, but lots of other I/O for embedded stuff, and Windows CE support is just around the corner so you'll have a choice of operating systems.
- techonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whats the worlds smallest stand alone server
- darkinfero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is pretty cool i'm going to buy one but i got to wait till it comes out i got to hear about it more before i spend the 200 bucks
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"it isn't up a guy's ass, is it?"
haha yeah thats the one!
seriously, what is the point in this thing really? i just dont get it... - dewey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The biometrics seem like overkill...
- macgabriel87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How can it be that only windows is supported while the device uses a PPC processor? Wouldn't it work better on a MAC because the mac uses a PPC too? And why PPC? I thought only Apple, Sony, and IBM had access to PPC chips, and aren't they more expensive anyway? Hmmm... I'm hinting it can be possible to mod it so you can boot OS9/OSX off it, now a portable mac sounds more intriguing than some linux box ;)
