- alecks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One noted side effect is that your microwave will stop operating while this is on.
oh, and your cats will die. - Peturbed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so now we can recharge our ipod shuffles wirelessly? woohoo
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1isn't this called bluetooth?????
- Machine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So now I can take photos with my Canon Digital Rebel and send them directly to my laptop! Hot diggety!
- colebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SweetsGreen: when you can get 480MBps from a bluetooth device, let me know...
- mrsark12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1re #1, wireless transmission of power was invented by tesla in the early 1900s. also pc equipment uses DC power not AC...
- colebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone made a good comment on this page that made me think. Until somebody comes up with wireless AC power (yea, good luck), is wireless USB or Firewire even REALLY worth it. So your thumb drive can communicate wirelessly with the computer, but now it needs a battery or you've got to plug it into the wall.
Maybe solar-powered wireless USB drives would be cool... - TheCasablancan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those of you wanting wires AC power:

Tesla did it in the 1890's. Funny, Neh? - bastawhiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We don't need this. We need *powered* wireless USB. It should give off enough gamma radiation that it will run a miniature steam engine in each wireless device and provide a stable power source.

I don't see that as the use for this type of thing. I am absolutely dying to get this as I use a laptop for most of my work, and I also need a scanner all the time. With this I can have my scanner over on the other side of the room where it always is, and I can put whatever I'm scanning in it and then go back to the other side of the room where I use the laptop, and scan the image from there without having to move my whole setup over to the scanner to plug in the USB cable. I really really want wireless USB in a bad way for my scanner and printer. It's more useful for those types of devices that need to be plugged in to a power source anyway, and for use with laptops rather than with desktop setups, or thumbdrive or other already portable USB devices. - kemche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For More info go here...

Certified Wireless USB performance is targeted at 480Mbps at 3 meters and 110Mbps at 10 meters
KG - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Colebarnes: When you can actually get above 400MBps from anything but Firewire, let me know.
(but I agree - Bluetooth is Buttslow) - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wont work.
wireless power? I think not. - jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it may not work with usb devices that need power. but soemthing like a printer would be semi cool.
- nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think of things with their own power souce - external hard drives - which could now be placed anywhere near a power socket.
- scottmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah what kind of security will it have, I didn't even see that talked about on their site. I would use this to be able to have my external hdd and DVD burner disconnected from my laptop so I can move it around freely, well within the 6ft distance that will result, we know when they say 30ft it only means 6ft right?
- KathyAlbrecht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm could prove useful. It would be great to have this for my usb tv tuner for my laptop. I wonder when its coming out.
- MajorOutage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great...MORE power bricks...
- mardak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So I've seen stuff like this for printers a few years back. I guess the new news is its for USB2 now?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0upto 30 feet means it probably only good at 6feet or less and then signal performance drops.
the hub has to be plugged in :( modern houses need more outlets.. every wall needs 20 thesse days.
i wonder what kind of security it has.. would hate to have drive by hackers change the channel on kathyalbrecht's usb tvtuner.. or drive by printings.. - celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0still waiting for wireless electricity:)
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hm, wireless devices could be.. fun.. Bad unecnrypted wireless access points, but wireless webcams, printers etc
*Remebers that USB dart firing thingy* heheh
"Okay, there isn’t proof that Wi-Fi can give us cancer, but if cell phones do it, then why not this?" Erm, because you don't shove wireless cards in your ear?
- Ben - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it seems too good to be true...
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,743234,00.asp - colebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But Tesla knew that the air was not a wonderful conductor of electricity and that any electrical or magnetic fields would dissipate over long distances through the air. Most of his work centered around transmitting power through the ground (the earth's surface). His little lamp experiment still had a wire running from the lamp to the ground in order to pick up the transmission.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's another company that boasts wireless mobile device charging..

This combined with wireless USB = a wireless dream come true? - luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally, wireless ipod syncing.
- billdcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is only good for devices that are not USB powered. My scanner gets its power from the USB bus, so this is rather useless.
- jimmyM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this device will brick your cat.
- colebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cdollar: That article actually does make sense, and that kind of "wireless" power is not a problem. But when we think of wireless, we think of transmission through the air.
If we have to be connected to the ground or sitting on top of a table that is wired to the wall in order to receive the "wireless" power transmission, is it really useful as far as portability goes? Your still tied down to something.
I'm going to stop posting comments about this, I'm annoying myself and everybody else. I'm way off subject...
Bottom line, in a handful of applications, wireless USB (and for argument's sake FireWire) would be GREAT in a handful of operations. In others, not so much. - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for many devices like music players, printers, and voip/cell phones this is a neat idea. for things like thumbdrives and the like which don't have any power source of their own anyway, frontside ports on a pc are great. wireless usb is better than a wireless keyboard or mouse IMHO since they don't have to be near the screen to be used anyway
- Sotong84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bluetooth is able to achieve high speeds by decreasing the signal distance. Sony is further developing the bluetooth and has been successful.
However, i'll make the switch since I'm not done boycotting Sony yet ^_^ - justdarick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see this not for the fact that you can be 30 feet away, but that you don't need more USB ports. I don't mind the wires for the printer, scanner, external hard drives, keyboard, etc. the problem is that I don't have enough USB ports... This is a cool invention solely for the things that require two cords now only take one.
- cohman2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0with all the the power bricks I have, I could build a house, and inside, I would get somekind of strange string of cancer. You wouldn't be able to sleep at night because of all the buzzing... And you would never be able to pay the power bill, but it would heat itself, and the world!

SATA?
Serial interface?
Fiber! - tehMatthewJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@cosmotic:
Agreed. Why is it so much of a hassle to actually find the original entry, article, or site for the story? Quit linking to these copycat blogs and eMags. - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For all those people complaining about their usb devices that need power from the USB port, think of this:
The HUB is actually plugged into the room, elsewhere, maybe on your desk, maybe across the room, but no line is needed from the ACTUAL usb device all the way to your computer whereever it may be.
I for one think it has some great uses, i'd sync station and the like in a more readily accessible spot. - JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wireless electricity? There are several practical methods for distributing wireless electricy. Induction {splashpower}, MASER, batteries, solar panels, wind-up dynamos, and fuel cells are just a few options.
- DocCarroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got plans already for this...headphones, Ipod syn, thumbdrive...can't wait. Where can I get one now?
- Portfolioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone who thinks cell phones (and other harmless radio frequency devices) cause cancer is a moron. Take a high school physics class and learn about the electromagnetic spectrum. The frequency is not high enough to cause mutations in cells. Thats why x-rays cause cancer and infrared does not. DUH
Neat device, but I have no use for it - fect900, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well does the use work good does it send receive fast?
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
So now we get fanboys over what kind of wire conections are faster? How about use whatever the ***** you want with whatever it works well for. If you actually care whether USB is faster than Firewire, or vice versa, you are a TOTAL loser. - ghostaliaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0again
check out this page for alternative power source do it yourself info & I am only posting this site again because it got cut of
www.makezine.com - ghostaliaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ive got to have it when it comes out and for the people talking about power, look there is always been a power problem with any & everything wireless & thats why I always make my own (here is a hint for making a power source people (http://www.makezine.com/)
I made a rechargable battery source for my wearable computer and it works just fine, but there is so many other options like solar, fuel cell and so on. (Computer Geeks The World Is Ours)haha. - DocCarroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Power!..oh yeah...forgot about that!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude ...this is the ***** i need this today if you get the right antenna and software you can turn it into the network wireless that people need like me and my neighbors....oh yeah you guys it said that its going to be in devices IE pda stuff like this will help big time.

BLUETOOTH IS NO WERE NEAR THIS SPEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - snyy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought it was called bluetooth
- whatsupwill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0would be real nice for printers that already need power and digital camera and ipods that don't need recharging.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's hot!
- oneMadRssn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0u can have wireless power. look at all those braun electric toothbrushes. nowhere on their exterior do they have anything metal. but when u rest them on their station they charge. u can even hold them a good millimeter or two abover their station and they charge. its wireless power, isnt it? granted it takes 12 hours to charge a goddam toothbrush and its max distance is 2mm....
