- LooterMcBeer, on 01/16/2008, -3/+48Dont post videos on your ghetto ass servers if you cant handle digg. Thats what this company called Youtube is for maybe you have heard of them.
- d4nie1, on 01/16/2008, -19/+61You forgot to mention that the MacBook Air will run MacOSX. The Sony Vaio will not. This laptop is targeted at Mac users who want an ultra portable laptop.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -2/+38If you're going to compare it to a 1.5" thick 13" laptop which weighs 4.2 pounds, you might as well compare it to the normal Macbook..
- minoss, on 01/16/2008, -1/+32Even the most hardcore apple fanboys usually aren't going to claim Apple is the best value. It rarely is. But neither is buying coffee at starbucks. Somehow that hasn't stopped them from succeeding. It is targeting people who are willing to give up a few features that may not affect them in trade for a well designed and more mobile notebook. It isn't for me, but I see nothing wrong with it for many people. Plus, the ability to run OSX or windows is a nice feature as well.
- pintomp3, on 01/16/2008, -2/+27you could make the same argument with the macbook vs the air. ultra portables, especially under 3lbs, tend to carry a premium price tag. remember the sony x505?
- potterboy, on 01/16/2008, -2/+25$1000... I don't think it's worth it. Cool tech though.
- Klarth, on 01/16/2008, -1/+21So, wait, the MBA's battery life was given as five hours in yesterday's keynote... Is that taking into account the SSD model or the HDD model? If that's the HDD model, then I'm looking forward to reading up about the SSD's battery life.
- falafelkiosken, on 01/16/2008, -1/+17Jeez, learn to program video players that doesn't use 80% of my cpus
- Peepsalot, on 01/16/2008, -2/+16This article/video does not mention Apple even once. This is about SanDisk's drives, which will work in any laptop. Don't try to bring your overhyped Apple babble into the picture.
- armo, on 01/16/2008, -2/+14There's no disk in a SSD
- imnojezus, on 01/16/2008, -0/+11Remember, just because you're not in the target market, doesn't mean the target market doesn't exist.
- MacEnvy, on 01/16/2008, -3/+14I have a friend who says it's perfect and cured his lymphoma just by watching the video preview on the Apple site. (Anecdotes aren't worth much.)
- Breepee, on 01/16/2008, -2/+13I hope Linux wins.
- PPCG4, on 01/16/2008, -0/+10Keep in mind that these are the iPod hard drives in the new MBA. They will consume very little power in comparison to the larger laptop hard drives.
I'd put money on the battery life quote being for the 80GB iPod hdd option. It would be kind of ridiculous for them to quote battery life on a $1000 upgrade. - quamb, on 01/16/2008, -2/+12Umh... isn't that the whole point?? Apple has had to cut features to make it this thin, and in your example exactly 50% thinner then a so called sony "ultra-portable"?
Ofcourse it's going to pricey. It's Apple. It's an ultra portable. So what? - eliasg, on 01/16/2008, -1/+11I'd like to see a video of two MacBooks booting, one with a standard 5400rpm SATA drive and one with one of these new SSDs.
- Chirp08, on 01/16/2008, -3/+13can you dual boot? yes.
- MrSprout, on 01/16/2008, -1/+10Dugg for "ghetto ass servers".
- jlbarber, on 01/16/2008, -1/+10Title is extremely misleading. It's not Apple's technology. It's Sandisk's. Just because Apple is offering it in a new laptop it's all of a sudden front page news? I suppose if Apple started rubbing peanut butter on their laptops we'll see front page news on that eh?
- etandrib, on 01/16/2008, -1/+9You don't make any sense. You just contradicted yourself.
- Psych77, on 01/16/2008, -0/+8You need an English lesson
- NATOuk, on 01/16/2008, -3/+11They can both run Linux, what's your point?
- bedouin, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7So one of my dreams has began to come true: the removal of moving hard disks. Next up is my second dream: the removal of fans in all machines. Those are the only two things that in a 20+ history of computer use I've ever had break. Not to mention the noise both produce is annoying.
- hansondr, on 01/16/2008, -2/+9Damn, Sparky didn't ask about the number of write cycles these new batch of drives are capable of.
"Limited write cycles. Typical Flash storage will typically wear out after 300,000-500,000 write cycles, while high endurance Flash storage is often marketed with endurance of 1–5 million write cycles (many log files, file allocation tables, and other commonly used parts of the file system exceed this over the lifetime of a computer). Special file systems or firmware designs can mitigate this problem by spreading writes over the entire device, rather than rewriting files in place."
-wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_state_drive) - codo678, on 01/16/2008, -1/+8Misleading title...
- chill1217, on 01/16/2008, -1/+8you must feel really dumb now..
- MutatedNantuko, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7It'll go down, remember how ungodly expensive LCD monitors used to be?
- MeatBiProduct, on 01/16/2008, -3/+9it can if you have a friends computer there to install it for you - ZING!
- Ireland, on 01/16/2008, -2/+8You're compassion says it all, the Vaio is double the damn thickness. Do you know get the whole technology miniaturization thing? Thin things cost more, plain as. I mean 1.5", that's very think for a modern laptop.
- lostarchitect, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6i don't recall anyone saying that. chill.
- tendonut, on 01/16/2008, -2/+8He could also make the same argument that all laptops vs. desktops carry an extremely premium price tag. It seems to work out that a $500 desktop = $1,400 laptop. But that is not the point of this argument. The point is, there are a select few who lugging around a laptop just isn't very practical. My boss is very excited about this because we are going to have to perform an inventory of the entire school district and hauling around a laptop from room to room and trying to operate it on one arm while scanning with the other is not exactly a walk in a park
- cpbrown, on 01/16/2008, -7/+13SSD Drive = "Solid State Drive Drive"
think!! - tendonut, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6Would you not expect the homepage to be covered with PS3/Xbox360/Wii stories if TGS or E3 v1.0 was going on? Did you forget MacWorld is going on?
- rollem, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6A 4200 rpm hard drive probably doesn't use too much more power than an SSD. Anybody know what the real specs say for these two drives?
- tendonut, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5The largest i've seen available to the regular consumer is 128GB so far....and it is over $9,000!!!! (Not really, closer to $3,000)
- Ramble, on 01/16/2008, -2/+7Apple arn't the first one to use it, SSDs have been availble as hard drives for some time.
- minoss, on 01/16/2008, -1/+6Even ultra portable users are usually going to want more than a 7" screen with 800x480 resolution.
- newdigger, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5O ok, good, it wasnt just me....
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -2/+7Right. 'Cause gamers are the target audience.
- offspring06, on 01/16/2008, -1/+6I didn't know MacWorld was going on so that explains it. Yes I have been living under a rock.
- Chirp08, on 01/16/2008, -1/+6I don't recall seeing that claim, way to flamebait. Apple is the first to flaunt the new technology to the general public. Maybe if some other manufacturers did this we would actually see a ***** load more progress and higher adoption rates for technology like this. In turn, cheaper prices.
- lostarchitect, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4lots of people. i bought a 3k laptop in grad school... it took me 5 years to pay for it, but it served me well.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -3/+7It doesn't have a floppy drive either. Imagine!
- mellenger, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4i was suprised that the macBook Air had a fan.. no moving parts should have been the goal. I'm not buying a laptop again until that happens.
- xjeffx, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4Seriously
- WoollyMittens, on 01/16/2008, -2/+6It's half as thin. DUH... Offcourse it costs more. The market is flooded with giant oversized portables that are cheaper.
- ryryindo, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5tholid thtate dwives
- dan7562, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3no...he is talking about an SSD...
- cidco, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is the fact that the MacbookAIR is just a regular IDE drive vs. everyone else in the industry using SATA.
- pathy, on 01/16/2008, -4/+7Why do people consider the Air an ultraportable?
It's a very thin machine, yes, but doesn't the large size of it put people off when classifying it as 'Ultraportable'? -
