- FishHammer, on 06/15/2009, -2/+75Holy crap, a tech guide on Digg that's actually extremely informative. I think the 8 pages are even justified in this case.
- TrueJournals, on 06/15/2009, -3/+48You're retarded.
- blah247, on 06/15/2009, -2/+34MACs have a bios. They just disable the access to it so it doesn't confuse their user base.
Oh they don't call it BIOS.. They call it open firmware I believe. - damnshoes, on 06/15/2009, -2/+29@iOSX
YOU STUPID ***** - Gunbard, on 06/15/2009, -0/+26Trolling successful. I rage'd.
- ecoop3r, on 06/15/2009, -2/+26BIOS = Basic Input Output System and is common across all computer architectures including your precious Apples. I really hope your joking because this definitely is the most retarded comment on this thread so far. Oh and lastly, the bios gives the users access to modify there most basic hardware settings allowing overclocking features and advanced power settings.
- MrCrissypoo, on 06/15/2009, -2/+25Wow, surprisingly helpful, now that I'm building a PC soon; this will be a great help.
- Spure, on 06/15/2009, -1/+19should've made the first page a table of contents.
- Equinox1, on 06/15/2009, -0/+17Either you're one ultra troll, or a massive bag of dicks. Or both.
- robertisaar, on 06/15/2009, -1/+17your level of ignorance amazes me...
- TaffeLewis, on 06/15/2009, -0/+16FTA:Here is where you'll find what IDE drives you have connected to your PC. These are the ones that use those old school fat ribbon cables of yesteryear and require multiple drives on the same channel be configured as 'Master' and 'Slave.'
Something about that makes me feel very old. - wTheOnew, on 06/15/2009, -0/+15Coming to a tech related website and calling the BIOS "pretty gay stuff" is probably not the smartest thing to do unless you're looking to make an asshat out of yourself.
- RyeBrye, on 06/15/2009, -4/+19No, it probably wont be. The manual that comes with your motherboard will be much more useful - since it will have information for your SPECIFIC bios.
- dextermanas, on 06/15/2009, -0/+14Fail for having to click thru 8 pages to find what you need.
Hint: To spare others the misery, just view the print version here:
http://www.maximumpc.com/print/6543 - 7m7uf, on 06/15/2009, -0/+12I concur.
- fury420, on 06/15/2009, -1/+13shame, you not only have yet to discover the reply button but are apparently unaware that intel macs have a motherboard without BIOS, as they use EFI. It may serve a similar function, but EFI is not BIOS
- FKnight, on 06/15/2009, -0/+10Great article. Buried for no "AGP Aperture Size" which everyone has a different answer for and no one has gotten a straight answer about from anyone.
- Projektorboy, on 06/15/2009, -1/+10I've loved MaximumPC since the Boot days. These guys somehow keep delivering month after month with good writeups to turn everyone into well-informed power users instead of the computer equivalent of people who rice out Honda Civics.
- cyberfreak01, on 06/15/2009, -0/+9Yeah who needs to make new guides. It's not like computers are rapidly changing with new settings being added with ever revision cycle.......
- 1what1, on 06/15/2009, -0/+8I am not able to decide whether you are sarcastic, or just plain retarded.
- KSUdesigner, on 06/15/2009, -1/+8No, Macs don't have a BIOS, they have OpenFirmware. Basically the same thing though.
- IKORKYI, on 06/15/2009, -0/+6when it comes down to it, 85-90% of bios', in my experiences, have the same features. even considering 70% of statistics are made up, i'd say it gives you the ability to almost completely control most boards.
- Coercer43, on 06/15/2009, -2/+8You had me until you said Macs suck. And I'm not a Mac fanboy, I'm a PC user.
- aforsberg, on 06/15/2009, -4/+10MACs do not have a BIOS /INTERFACE/ to speak of. They locked this out due to the face that their users are generally scared easily by the idea of changing settings. If it is unchangeable, it's a Mac.
- ThatGeek, on 06/15/2009, -3/+8they see me trollin
they hatin
tryin to catch me writin dirty - KSUdesigner, on 06/15/2009, -1/+6There is no "better way." Both systems are equally as good, it's just a matter of personal preference these days. It may be the better OS for you, and it is for me too, but some people just prefer Windows over OSX. That doesn't make them gay, and it doesn't make the operating system gay either. The only thing that makes someone gay is whether or not they prefer to have sex with someone who has the same genitalia. And, if you want people to take you seriously you should really work on your grammar. Your profile says you're 20 years old, but the way you write says you're 5.
- FrederikNS, on 06/15/2009, -0/+5Open Firmware is the specific implementation, the broader term is EFI.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Firmware_I ... - atticus8, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Like it's 2006 up in here.
- RyeBrye, on 06/15/2009, -5/+9Your mobo should come with a manual or at least have a PDF you can download that describes in-depth your BIOS settings. This guide is ridiculous because chances are your bios doesn't have all of these features, calls them by a different name, or has additional vendor-specific features that this guide doesn't cover.
In other words... This guide is pretty much worthless. - WELLDOITLIVE, on 06/15/2009, -10/+14Thanks, Ollie.
- Enlefo, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4As an IT professional I have to say this a pretty well rounded guide, could be really helpful for a lot of people.
- inactive, on 06/15/2009, -1/+5Considering I am getting a new motherboard any day now for my first build.. this is really helpful.
- spontec, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4@blah247
Power PC based macs used Open Firmware. The newer Intel models use EFI. - EddiePotato, on 06/15/2009, -2/+5x2. Macs are good at what they do. Many of us PC users simply consider the hardware inflexible and the models generally overpriced.
- sephiroth965, on 06/16/2009, -1/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS#The_BIOS_busines ...
There are only a few major BIOS vendors, so most BIOS's are basically identical. - Scotty87, on 06/15/2009, -0/+3I all of sudden feel sick to my stomach after reading your comments iOSX... I don't need to say anything as what needs to be said has been said. Good luck in life you failure.
- Syugo, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3I must come from the past, cause I'm 16 I know what IDE cables are. We only stared using SATA cables extensively until recently...my last build I used IDE cables which was about 3 years ago.
- GothAlice, on 06/15/2009, -1/+4EFI is in use in Xenon and above Intel server solutions, FYI.
- FrederikNS, on 06/15/2009, -2/+5Not entirely true, as macs don't have any BIOS, they have EFI instead.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Firmware_I ... - AdmiralAcbar, on 06/15/2009, -0/+383 comments in five days, eh? It's impressive how fast you spam ignorance.
- Brandoskey, on 06/15/2009, -2/+5a computer without a bios is like a car without an ignition, that goes for mac and pc
- wTheOnew, on 06/15/2009, -2/+5Technically, you're right, it doesn't have a BIOS. It has EFI with BIOS support.
Granted, you didn't know that when you made your statement, so for our purposes EFI and BIOS are one in the same and you definitely have no in depth knowledge of computers whatsoever. - Elranzer, on 06/15/2009, -1/+3iOSX is a troll account. Do not respond to it. Just bury it and report it.
- bsonline, on 06/16/2009, -1/+3Somehow, I think you might be a little bit sarcastic.
The #1 tip you can give anyone is to DO RESEARCH. Find out what feature set your BIOS supports - otherwise, the rest of the article would fail. Many computers today (no, not new ones) can't boot from USB. If you RTFM you know this. A quick google search will also clue you in. And if you don't know to look at boot options (ok, you fail, I admit) then you could comb advanced settings until the cows come home.
This is but one example. Techs, chime in here. How many calls have you received that would have been avoided with 3-5 minutes of research? - ghostborg, on 06/15/2009, -0/+2When In doubt Max it out.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2That makes sense.
- Ramzy, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2This setting defines the speed at which the HDD operates. Lower settings = Quieter HDD, less power consumption, and reduced transfer speeds.
Performance mode = Running at your HDD's default specs. - cire84117, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Drive A and B: Refers to the type (if any) of floppy drive you have installed, or plan to install. The most common today is 1.44M, 3.5 in. You can also set this to Disabled if you're not planning to rock out with your floppy out.
Floppy parties seem to have gotten less and less love lately. Sad - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -1/+3only once in a blue moon a useful article actually gets posted here. usually digg is filled with naive windowlickers who drool over pictures of obama doing the stupidest ***** (like sitting down on porch), a bunch of trailer trash spamming their patriotic/nationalist garbage and harassing anyone who isn't as white trash as them, myspace/mac losers who just discovered ascii art and a 5 year old meme, elitist pseudo-nerds from slashdot who think that just because they installed ubuntu that they're actually computer savvy, and lastly the worst terrorists of them all, paid israeli shills like israeligirl that pretend to be females in order to gain trust from gullible idiots and push their propaganda on them.
- idoj, on 06/15/2009, -1/+3"every one of my comments is to help these ppl kno the truth!!!"
Right. Clue to you: You're not doing Apple any favors with your comments! -
