- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18yep. To beat Sony and Blu-Ray, they are trying to spend money to estabilish HD-DVD.
They will spend a lot of money to estabilish HD-DVD as the dominant format. Spending millions today, to estabilish HD-DVD, will bring them money years from now. - middleman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17One thing I dont understand is the fact that these newer DVD's are coming out when not all the games that I buy from a store come in DVD versions. Im still buying 6 CD's at a time when I would rather have a DVD.
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13So what? This one informs us of the loss without resorting to even more petty Sony bashing like the other two. Which we get more than enough of around here as it is. The one article doesn't even mention the PS3 in it, yet the author decided to drag it into the discussion for no reason anyways.
- raiderj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18So if I don't buy one... I save $499 and Toshiba saves $200!
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Well, apperently they assume you have a $500 graphics card, but can't take a chance you don't own a $10 DVD-ROM drive. Sega CD syndrome.
- Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Who the ***** cares? This made it to the front page so shut the ***** up.
- laserob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They're sold out in most places. I think for the most part the public wants a high definition DVD format. If microsoft releases a $99 drive for the 360 in the fall, count me in.
- UserAgent, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15It's even worse for the consumer. Since the HD-DVD player costs $499, this means that on average the consumer loses approximately $499 with each player purchased!
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10So.... HD-DVD came out too early?
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i want to know what the specs are for the linux computer that is branded as an HD-DVD player...
that might be fun to hack. - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I especially love how some rural video-rental stores still haven't transitioned out of VHS more than halfway, yet we're obsoleting DVDs.
- Yupp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I for one, salute Toshiba. They are making it possible for us to buy movies that suck in higher resolutions!
- misxn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I bet they'll lose alot more then $200 on each since the majority of those players won't be bought anyway.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2$99 for a HD-DVD drive for your 360? Come on, even the biggest XBox fanboy isn't that ***** nieve.
Count on $250+. Especially if the field of set top boxes doesn't explode. - cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didnt like the unit i bought. it would freeze on all three of the movies i got. took it back to the store now have 3 hd-dvd's i cant see. sadness.
- RazorElite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Companies generally only lose out on gaming consoles, so I'm sure this is a big deal. Although the goal is the same as the gaming market. Try to become the dominant product before the competition. I think if they really want to dominate though, they need to release many more dozens of titles before people start buying them up.

- BloKKem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just want to watch movies. I dont care if its on VHS, DVD, HD-DVD, or whatever the next best thing is. Unless your one of those people that has to have the latest and greatest (nothing wrong with that) then I dont see why regular DVD should already be one of the things that already needs to be thought of as needing an upgrade. Maybe its just me but paying 500.00 for a "new" DVD player just isn't warranted when most peoples regular DVD players are perfectly fine. A few years ago, DVD really outclassed VHS and was an obvious improvement in picture and sound. Can this HD-DVD really say the same? I wonder if the whole HD-DVD will be successful.
- SpiritCrisis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I personally don't believe this simply because it matters what you define as losing. Losing to some people could mean that they are losing a little more greed money than there used to. Plus if they are losing from this they can claim such as a tax write off.
- rijet0711, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Props up to Toshiba though. I fully want HD-DVD to win this battle. Toshiba is spending massive money on marketing... every time their is a commercial in the world cup, Toshiba is there trying to tell you a laptop with HD-DVD and they make it so easy that any average consumer would fall for it, just thinking that it has a normal DVD player which "can support high definition stuff".
and to the dupe police, please stfu - Jorenm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Finally we will all know the answer to the ancient question:
"do movie stars have skin pores?" - cadpo76, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Apperently you have no grasp of econ. It doesn;t matter how many are bought by the consumer, only by the distributor (e.g. Best Buy, Circuit City).
- stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I don't see why people think that the HD-DVD add on for the 360 will be $99. Has there been any indication at all from MS? I know they charge $99 for a 20 gig HDD and $99 for a wifi adapter. What makes everyone thing that a next gen DVD add on will be the same?
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1woops double post
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Ahahahahaha! They'll be losing even more when they don't sell! Same goes for BluRay!! Ahahahahaha!
- jjintheuk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2big wow, companies always lose money on new products / technology when its released. Take the PS2 Consoles - sony lost millions, then the following year millions in profit (or billions :)) - thats what I can remember anyway

http://www.youtwbe.com - Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2More then that I am sure. Toss in the HDMI cables and the $25-$35 per movie you are looking at some serious cheddar just to watch your sub-par high def content.
- Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Blame the stupid execs.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Is "never needed or wanted in the first place" considered "too early" ??
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Then don't buy. Download.
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3in all honesty other than shareholders of Toshiba stock, who really gives a flying *****?
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2I'm not digging any of them because I've never seen an analyst prediction that was on the money.
